Fun fact dealing with part of their school conversation. They mentioned 10 being midlife at that time but (besides them obviously being hyperbolic) people actually still quite often lived till 60-70. It's just there was so much death from children and babies that it lowered the average age by so much.
Completely agree! I think child mortality back then is why in some cultures a first haircut was (sometimes still is) celebrated- "Congratulations, you made it this far!"- true, when you'll be older you could still get mortally wounded, catch an infection or disease (known or unknown at the time) or die during a childbirth, but getting past a certain age as a child was something worth noting on its own.
Makes sense, and infant mortality is fairly well documented. A bunch of .5s or lower would really screw with the average. Don’t forget the mother’s that also died many of which were quite young.

Almost definitely, no one pointed at their fingers and said "I'm going to call this 'four'". What would have happened, is a shepherd would have gone "I have [4 sheep], where there was a word that meant "4 sheep", which was a totally different word for the word for "4 goats" or "4 apples".
And so one day a shepherd would look at his flock and go "I have no idea how many sheep that is. No shepherd has ever had that many sheep before. It is countless sheep." and his neighbor would say "Oh, well perhaps, but my sheep are *more* countless!" and the two get into an argument, so they agree to stick beads on a string for each sheep they have, and then they will see which string of beads is longer. And so they do that, and now this string of beads is handy, because when someone asks the shepherd how many sheep he has, he can say "countless", or he can just show them the string and say "this many", which is much more useful, because when you say "countless" sometimes you mean 10 sheep and 1 sheep, and sometimes you mean 10 sheep and 10 sheep and 10 sheep.
Now you are getting to be a wealthy shepherd (Because you have countless sheep, after all), so you start having countless other things, like goats, and wheels of cheese and barrels of beer. So you go to the market to buy beads so you can make more of these counting strings. And you need to tell the merchants how many beads you are buying, because you cannot make a counting string for that many beads until you already have the beads. So you and the other rich shepherds and bead-makers start agreeing on words for "11 beads" and "15 beads" and "37 beads".
So now you can tell a merchant how many beads you need, but you still need a counting string to say how many sheep you have. Then one day someone asks you how many sheep you have, and wouldn't you know it you left your sheep counting string in your other toga, so in a moment of frustration you tell the guy "I have 37 beads of sheep". And the guy you're talking to, he has his own counting strings, he knows how large a 37-bead counting string would be. "Wow, that's a lot of sheep!" and both of you realize that you just conveyed the number of sheep without needing a word for it.
Pretty soon, people start using bead-numbers for other countless things. Who needs a physical counting string if you can just say "I have 28 beads of ale barrels" and everyone gets the idea. So that keeps expanding and each generation puts less effort into learning the number-words for sheep and cheese wheels and ale barrels and start just saying "I want 3 beads of ale for me and my friends here!" and everyone knows what you mean (although the barkeep is a funny man and puts a drop of ale in each cup and calls it "3 beads of ale" because that's what they look like), until eventually no one even remembers that the word [3 beads] referred to beads at all. They just use it for [3 of something]
And now you have numbers.

Except for the fact that they were wrong. Higher learning institutions in China (the Taixue) wasn't established until the Han Dynasty around 3 AD and the formalized examination system would spend almost a millennium being refined into the system that it became. Not actually becoming what we would today call a test until several centuries after the institution was established.

Math teacher here, Trevor is correct on both counts! We use a base 10 system because we have ten fingers (i.e. digits), and it would be SO much more convenient to use a base 12 system, but alas.
