Just got my hands on a 1981 Sportster am I last year original red paint new cylinder heads and pistons and Andrews camshafts but the gear box is missing and it needs new clutches I really like your show keep up the good work it's really help me out Steve from Annapolis Maryland
Congrats on your purchase. You can buy almost a whole tranny aftermarket, maybe except the trap door. If you do put in a different trap door, you might have to line-bore the bearing on the RH case: www.open-sport.org/Repair/Honing-transmission-mainshaft-bearing/
Steve from Annapolis please keep up the good work you're very thorough like the way you take care of your tools and your old-fashioned in a lot of ways and I really Envy you so much glad somebody is taking the time to be for real without a big sponsor and some big company name it's just you at your house at is awesome
I have seen so many bikes ruined by silicone sealant getting into the bearings. I use a drop of blue Loctite on the four trap door bolts, and that is about it. Thanks for the comment.
Cool that you have the same year. I just got the tool to push out the race in the LH case half, and it is wrong. Tip is Jims 94547-80A is for big bikes, Jims 94547-80B is for our Sportsters. May Harley burn in hell for not saying in the service manual there are two different tools with the same base number. With Harley parts in general, an A or B suffix usually means it will fit later years.
@@Open-Sport Good to know your getting out all the bugs for everyone!!LOL I plan on tearing the motor down this winter and riding it for now. The problem I'm having is the wasted spark igniting fuel and i get a puff coming back through my Mikuni. Timing is dead on the 40' degree mark and valves are set right. An advice? Single Fire Ignition?
@@traviscook3842 Well, a single-fire setup would fix it, but there should not be this problem even with a dual-fire setup. Could there be a cam that is a gear tooth off? Does this have solid lifters? Make sure the pushrods are nice a free so the valves are seating all the way. It's hard to believe there is enough leakage or problems to leave a burnable mixture in the other cylinder.
Steve from Annapolis don't give away all your secrets at works good that's your creation keep up the good work once again wish I could meet you and work with you we would get along really good
Since I don't work on bikes for a living, there are no secrets in my book-- I just want to pass on what I can to the next generation before my time's up. Thanks for the comment.
About Aviation form a gasket Permatex makes it really good stuff that's up quick said of using that ridiculous silicone I never had trouble putting engines together with Aviation form a gasket like I said it looks like old shellac or baby shut
I guess you must mean this stuff: www.permatex.com/products/gasketing/gasket-sealants/permatex-aviation-form-a-gasket-no-3-sealant-liquid/ I might give it try. I have been happy with Yamabond 4, but Permatex makes great stuff.
I recently got my hands on a 74 sportster and I want to do a ground up restoration on it. It would be awesome if I could get you to rebuild the engine for me.

Thanks for your kind words. I won't take money from any company to use their stuff. I figure if it is worth using, it is worth paying for.
"I live with the leaks...Don't glue your bike together " Best advice ever.
Best tools ever? Shop manual, parts manual and your videos. Cheers Paul.
