Big J!! What a fantastic review brother!! Man great job, from the editing in the beginning to the showing of the 301 and talking about our Saturday night live!! Glad you enjoyed this knife!
When Buck subsequently changed over to the hammer/anvil shield, the shield became an integral part of the frame itself, the pillar escutcheon shield is not glued, soldered, or pinned on, They are cast in place as are the bolsters. Note - only black Valox sawcut scales have the solid shield pillar. All Dymondwoods have glued in shield 'plates'. All pre 1985 black sawcut shields are glued. All black sawcut scaled 300 models with NO date code are glued in also. It sounds confusing but isn't, some of the black scale 300s continued to be made by Camillus a long time after Buck took back production of the 301,303,309 and 305 in 1985. All the black scaled 300s with NO date code on the tang should be glued in shields. Buck glued on shields until they started casting the one piece liner with bolsters and shield pillar as part of the liner. So if a black sawcut scaled 300 series post 1990 knife has a spring for every blade, has a SS spring pin, has a round ended shield where the hammer imprint has a long closed ended handle, then you are talking pillar shield. They are TANKS. The date code is located just to the right of the number "301" on the tang of the main blade. Assuming the knife you bought in 2014 was also made in 2014, that date code would be the bottom half of a circle with a dot in the center. Date codes for the various years of manufacture can be found in a sticky at the top of the Buck subforum page. They all seem to have the same issue just sand / grind/ file the heel at the bottom of the blade down a tad and it will sit against the internals a little closer and while you're at it make the "spey" a little more of a spear point.
Just found your channel, nice review! I have a 301 and a 303 supposedly arriving today. I have been looking for traditionals besides just Case. Hopefully these stockmans will not have major blade rubbing like most Case ones. The 3 spring design should make for more room inside for the blades. I'll probably do a review on them after playing with them for a couple weeks.
Thanks for checking it out!!! I'll definitely go to your channel as well!! With the 3 spring and hollow grind I can never see these rubbing but you just never know. This will prob be the next Buck I do purchase tho. I want to get the 300 series rolling and this is just a nice work knife from what I can tell in my little time handling it.
That's a real nice looking stockman. Not sure the material on the rite edge. Style was black pearl but reminded me more of pouring a glass of root beer. Great video buddy!
Hey BigJ, Congrats on hitting 1K subs. Just wanted to let you know that the emblem on the Buck knives is of a knife cutting a nail (not a wrench). I figured I'd let you know as that's how we learn and I'm not busting on you. Have a good one buddy. Later
Thanks brother!! I'm definitely new to the Buck Game and am having fun learning all i can about them!! I can definitely take the criticism and laugh at myself so no harm at all man.. Now, if we could only teach everyone else to put it across in the respectful manner you just did then we would have it made!!! Thanks again for the congrats and hopefully you enjoy my content!!
@@BaxtersBlades thanks very much Andrew!! This was back before I had my own, was a loaner from Kevin. They are pure beef like a 75!! Have a great weekend!!
Let me start by saying I love the Buck brand and have many in my collection. The problem I have had is that I cannot find a 301 that is in great shape. I have even opened 3-4 boxes at a time at a knife store, and every single one of them had problems. Either one or more blades with blade wobble and some had tight blades but the snap on the springs were weak. A small gap on the springs I can deal with, but the other issues are not for me. I will keep looking and eventually find one. Sad part is that the Buck slip joints from China that I have purchased don't have those problems. I just subscribed to your channel. Thanks for the content.
Thanks man!! I went to a store here and they had 2 and both were GAP CITY as well. I'm gonna go on the hunt still and maybe go for a new old stock on off the Evil Bays!!! Thanks for the support!!!
I always check the flea markets and the "gun & knife" shows too but haven't found the right one. I would love to find a good used one to carry and a new one for the collection. The search continues.
I have not been to Gordyville. I have heard about it. I go to the Gun & Knife show in Bloomington(they canceled their last one) and Peoria when they have one and the flea market at the Thresherman's Reunion in Pontiac on Labor Day weekend. Sometimes I hit some on the 4th of July. I will have to check out Gordyville.

I have both of those knives. I carried the 301 for years and yes ,it is a workhorse. I wish I could find another 80's era 301 in good shape.

It was pretty close to the same size of this 301, figured it would be a good piece to compare it to.

I received my delivery today. Thanks again. I have a few Mora knives but this is my first one in Carbon Steel. Happy to add it to the collection.
The 301 is an awesome carry. I really like mine! Thanks for your thoughts on it, buddy!
Thanks for checking it out man!! It’s an awesome workhorse for sure.
Great Wallet and Knife
Thanks, These were definitely some awesome items he sent over!!
Do you prefer the Stockman or the 701? Nice wallet too. Thanks BigJ
The 301. Not sure why tho, I think cause it’s made for pure work.
The hunting knife in the shield is being hammered through a bolt.
Been carrying a Buck 301 in my pocket for over 50 years.
Thanks for checking it out, Have a happy new year!!
Got the same one brother
They are awesome working man blades
I found a NOS, 2002 with the box for $30, i was happy as can be, that why i pulled this video.
