Also, as far as the albatross goes, it was an old sailors tale that if you hurt or killed an albatross, it would bring you bad luck.

Well it really makes sense, almost every single person who tried to "end" her or her career actually destroyed theirs... 👀

This song references “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”. In it, the mariner shoots an albatross because he thinks the albatross brings bad luck. But the albatross actualy brings good luck, and after shooting it the mariner becomes cursed and all these bad things start happening to him. Had he left the bird alone, he would have been fine. It is a metaphor for her love life. The person being warned is Travis and the “wise men” are the exes (“cautions issued he stood shooting the messengers/they tried to warn him about her”). She is saying the exes were “cursed” because they metaphorically tried to shoot her down, but Travis isn’t doing that, so he will be fine. The exes and the media are saying she is going to ruin his life, but he lets her fly, he doesn’t bring her down, he just wants to fly beside her, so he will be fine. She also references Shakespeare in “a rose by any other name is a scandal”. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet says “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”, and she means that if Romeo wasn’t a Montague he would still be the same person but it would be ok for them to be together, basically saying that his last name doesn’t define him. In the song, it means that no matter who her boyfriend is, he (or the relationship) will always be a scandal.
And this is why Taylor is a poet hahhaa

The white dress and black gloves combo she wore to the awards where she announced TTPD....looks like an albatross. White with black wing tips, I love it.

The Albatross is also a continuation of a theme weaved into the rest of the album: London pubs and bars.
It joins The Black Dog and The Bolter as apparent references to venues on The Tortured Poets Department.
The Albatross Club is a pub in Farringdon, London, but it also has one more particularly eerie significance.
Albatross is defined in the Britannica Dictionary as: 'A continuing problem that makes it difficult or impossible to do or achieve something.
'Fame has become an albatross that prevents her from leading a normal and happy life.'
This metaphor is put down to The Rime of the Ancient Mariner - a 1798 poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
The word albatross is sometimes used metaphorically to mean a psychological burden that feels like a curse. Maybe referring to her fame/her celebrity status or a dysfunctional relationship

This wasn’t a favorite of mine when it first came out but it really grew on me. The lyricism is incredible. It’s an amazing song

This seems to be a pretty underrated song, I never hear anyone talking about it and in listenings and rankings, it sort of just goes by with a "that was ok", but it's my favourite on the album. The writing is so clever and poetic; almost the whole thing is metaphorical, this is definitely Taylor writing with her quill pen. I think the vocals and melodies are exquisite, and the production with the guitar and gorgeous strings are just beautiful.

An albatross was actually a good omen, because they can fly far from land, but will guide a ship back to land when they fly home. But harming an albatross is spitting in the face of good fortune.
In "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" a sailor kills an albatross with a crossbow bolt and it curses the entire ship to wander the seas until they run out of drinkable water. So the sailors tie the albatross around his neck as a sign of his guilt for whomever finds their ship after they all die. So having an albatross around your neck is a sign of guilt and misfortune.

This is what Genius says about this song: The Albatross” is a bonus track from Swift’s 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department. The track was announced on February 23, 2024, while she was performing in Sydney, Australia, for The Eras Tour.
An albatross is a large sea bird that spends its first six years without touching the land, due to them being so well-adapted to their oceanic existence. In a metaphorical sense, an albatross is usually referred to as “something that causes anxiety or guilt or that burdens and encumbers.”
Like many tracks on Swift’s 11th studio album, “The Albatross” seems to be a metaphorical reference to Swift’s six-year long relationship with British actor, Joe Alwyn.
Many fans also believe that Taylor’s outfit for the 2024 Grammys (a white dress with long black gloves) was an easter-egg to this song, since albatrosses are white birds with black wings.

I don't think that the song has anything to do with Joe. I think that that reference source was incorrect. This seems more about Travis and the warnings he received when they started dating and people had heard/read fake news about Taylor. He did not believe it.

An albatross is one of the longest living bird. Will live up to 70 years. One of the widest wing spans.

Basically people were doing her wrong, but they were gaslighting and telling everyone that she was bad. She tried to warn the people, but they didn’t want to hear it. And then when the truth came out and they got hurt too, they learned the truth. She was trying to tell everybody all along to save them from going through what she went through. Don’t know if it’s a Scooter Braun or a Kanye West reference🤷🏻‍♀️
    I love this song!

this song is about the media and stuff warning the next person taylor dates (travis) about being with her that that she'll "destroy them." as the song goes on & the story continues, taylor's warning travis that they'll try to ruin their relationship because the media has ruined her relationships before. so then by the end taylor comes in and protects him and "saves him." that's what she's talking about in the last chorus
