The problem is people confuse conservatism with free market fundamentalism of Thatcher. The Conservatives weren't always dominated by this free market ethos, and Peter Oborne exemplifies that, which is why I have respect for him even though I am very to his left. He exemplifies a kind of old Tory that has been washed away since the Thatcher revolution. Actually the current Conservative are even more radical than Thatcher.
I am also far to the Left of Peter Oborne, & I totally agree with you. I think Peter Hitchens & Roger Scruton are two more old-school conservative who I admire.
I'm watching this 8 years later and I do wish conservatives like Oborne could reclaim the term from the degenerates that have taken so much from all of us politically, materially, even spiritually...I'm an anarchist, a libertarian communist....soooooo much to his left, so I imagine we'd not see eye to eye on everything (the point being that that's FINE), but I'd take his worldview over that of low grade neoliberal thieves from Johnson to Starmer and their ilk.
Sadly, in a British society now suffering from very heavily factionalised opinions, there are far too many people who seem unable to distinguish between neutraility and hostility. In a nutshell they fall into the "Not with us? Must be against us!" mindset. Such people tend to see the BBC as biased or hostile. Those people would do well to reflect that the mindset they embrace is the same as fundamentalist and terrorist organisations around the world. Of course the BBC is not perfect and often falls short of what it is supposed to do, but nevertheless I think it still stands head and shoulders above the herd.
