Absolutely agree on your point for storage!! I see so many makeovers where existing storage is knocked down and replaced with floating shelves and open storage, and the result always looks insanely cluttered.

I'm a fan of the Kallax unit because it's inexpensive and very versatile. I loathe open shelves, for me personally it looks untidy. With the Kallax system, everything has a space inside each cupboard or box. The units can be made more individual by choosing the drawer options and doors to make the squares a cupboard. This can be done with a different colour - like a white unit with pale oak doors, shelves or drawers. There are so many different designs, colours and sizes of handles/door knobs that can make the simple unit more personal/aesthetic.

look, im going to get a big lounge sofa anyway because the most important thing for a sofa is that i enjoy it. And i love lounging on my sofa. My home is not for others to enjoy, it is for me to enjoy.

I get that if a piece of design is very common then it can feel like it's not personal to you, but I don't think the ubiquity of a design is itself a good argument not to have it; sometimes a design is so good that it deserves to grace the lives of as many people as possible.

The massive sofa depends on the lifestyle. We use the sofa for lounging and Tv mostly, rarely for casual conversations with the people that come over as we have exterior seating for that. We are staying in another house waiting for renovation with a 2-seat sofa and it's extremely uncomfortable for two people. I miss the chase lounge.

" Massive" is not because is 3 seats/loungechair. A sofa can be 3 seats but "airy". Not bulky/heavy. At least , I see it/I understand the meaning of " massive" like that.

    • @amberculph3419
      @amberculph3419 ปีที่แล้ว +13

I agree. We have a very large 3m by 3m corner lounge which seats about 6 people for a movie/games night, and we can both lay down on when alone. It’s entirely too big for the space but our last couch was uncomfortable because we couldn’t ‘lounge’ on it, even though it fitted better. All in all, it’s about what is functional for you and your lifestyle, and you can try to make it aesthetically pleasing, but shouldn’t be at the expense of your comfort.

0:46 is actually a good use of the Kallax unit rather than being against a wall it acts as space divider in the middle of a room, whilst letting light in as it has no backboard. Great for displaying stuff in this scenario👌🏻

I understand the point, but I disagree with one collocation of yours regarding the Kallax unit: "people who have the items to display probably have the budget to pay for proper furniture to do so" -- I'm a book lover. I've been investing much of my money ever since my teenage years to acquire books I love, and I've got some beautiful editions. Because I've prioritized the books and I could buy over time, it def did not mean I have a budget for proper shelving. It took me years to buy (they stayed in boxes until that point), and I went for something similar to the Kallax in my country. It's sturdy, simple, and doesn't take away from the books.

I had my 3 seater sofa reupholster in December and ask them to make a matching ottoman, it's easy to move around as extra seating and we also use it to put our feet up and as a coffee table, I bought a large round tray so that we can safely put things on it, it's worked out really well for us. I find that having individual seating options works well for guests, as a family of three we are happy to all sit together on the single sofa.

And use a lot of complimenting but not matching textured throws and throw pillows to help break it up while also tying it together.

How ridiculous to go off on Kallax shelving. It is what it is and for most people that means a minimal, unobtrusive storage system with clean lines and smooth surfaces. As for clutter, that is a personal choice that people make. Most of us are more disciplined. // The price shown for BESTA is out of date. The wall of storage compartments shown (1:29) costs well over $1600.

I had an idea for you to stem off this, but I feel many (myself included) do not know how to light different spaces correctly. For example, as you well put, IKEA don’t even offer the correct products to do so. I wondered if you would be so kind to shed your knowledge on what style lights lend themselves to each living space? And how to correctly ‘light’ our homes. Thanks again for the brilliant content. P.s - would love to meet for a coffee and chat if you find yourself in the Bristol area 😊 peace!

    1. The IKEA Kallax is perfect for Brompton bicycle owners, if you remove the cross pieces, the folded bike fits into the open space and can be functional as storage and is perfect to display as it’s folded state is an art form in itself.

    Another thing,
if you have to have storage space, for your storage, it goes without saying......time to get rid of it.
I use to this unorthodox straightening up routine for unexpected guests who were "five minutes away" or "just around the corner to give you a quick visit". Yeah, you know the type.
Everything that wasn't suppose to be on the surfaces (less food items) went into small garbage bag. Mostly toys and mail. Dishes thrown into the dishwasher, beds were fluffed, and a spritz of lemon scent....you know. I had an apartment, and that can be almost impossible to keep up with kids.
Those garbage bags would be forgotten about here and there. Well, I wound up with six garbage bags mostly mail. So, to neaten it up, I purchased two nicely sized plastic bins. The bags went into one bin leaving one empty,....for more room if I needed it.
Suddenly, I needed storage for my storage bins and put them in the back door closet. .....all six bins , filled to the top!!.
Mail from years ago, my childrens' outgrown toys, a bunch of new clothing unopened and still tagged, .... knobs, tools, sewing fabric, Mickey D kiddie meal toys, curtains, knick knacks ....uggh....
Firstly, that mail !! If it looks like junk mail, throw it out right away. Don't even read the sales. Invest in a heavy duty shredder. Use it at least once a week minimally. Secondly, those unexpected guests were politely turned down/or told to come by later if I was not ready.
Storage for blankets and seasonal items, was only a dream back them

    @dcoughla681 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thanks Daniel. Common mistakes when buying a sofa are buying one in a sale irrespective of other factors, not measuring furniture before purchase, no thought about how you are going to get it into the house after purchase, not checking for comfort & whether it has zipped seats for cleaning. A decent sofa should last at least 10 years so poor quality, uncomfortable, fixed, trendy shaped sofas in the light colour of the moment are a bad buy even more so with people with pets and kids. I agree with you about cheap generic art, especially signs. It looks tacky & brings down the whole look down.

The first two points you make are really strange:
    1. People display stuff because they want to display them.

New subscriber here! Actually feeling quite smug- I love the aesthetic of open shelving but I know I’m not tidy enough to keep them clutter-free…I’ve got Besta sideboards in my living room which are great to hide all the crap. I recently redecorated and added another Besta with glass doors so I can show off all my nice things without the temptation of them being a dumping ground. I do use Kallax in my art room as the bins that fit them are brill to house art materials, and the shelves without are full of larger watercolour pads and sketchbooks. I prefer the neatness of Besta in my main living area though. The only cross on the list is I’ve ordered matching sofa and chair (still waiting 😢) but I totally fell in love with the orange colour and the larger size armchair, so matchy-matchy it is! Feeling extra smug that all my artworks are totally original oil paintings by me. These are the main inspiration for the colour palette of the room. Love the video!

I WOULD have liked a smaller one but I really needed it to be a decent sleep sofa as well (my mother will stay with me and my daughter more often in the beginning, helping out; possibly I'll have to sleep on the sofa as well, giving up my bedroom to my daughter).
Also, when we had COVID a few months ago I *really* appreciated the chaise lounge, being able to lie/suffer there, while my daughter watched TV.
So big sofa it is, again ... trying to be minimalistic in most other respect.

Great tips in general... BUT. Saying that hanging art at random will give somebody a great gallery wall is wrong. Those galleries are carefully designed to look random, but they are anything but.

have at least one art piece that is more expensive than your tv and have artwork that is larger than the tv. Good art will not depreciate unlike tvs. Also avoid having matching frames. art sould be layerd over time and reflect personality etc. Bulk bought pictures are for hotels

my family definitely don't agree with the sofa rule, we often have lunch at the living room table and even our decently large corner sofa is not quite enough for the four of us.
sure one could sit in the chair next to it but that would mean having to get things off it

A Tankless Hotwater Heater would work also . The hot water would come on faster in the bath. But You can get one that cycles the water. For full time hot water I the kitchen, if really needed , their just as good or most of the time better. Your hot water tank should be shut off and plan your time of use. It heats up the room ,in winter that good . Summer that not good . Cut your bill . For hot water and Air conditioner.

Don't buy cheap cliché items he says, with the most cliché single bulb floor lamp in the background. That's probably the single most common floor lamp design you can get in absolutely any furniture store.

I'm looking for second hand sofas at the moment, and there's seriously about 10 new ones in my area EVERY DAY. It's not like a live in a big city or anything, there's just a lot of people getting rid of their sofas for some reason. Aaand I think I can figure out why, because there seems to be a bit of a trend with these sofas - they are all given away very cheaply, sometimes for free, and they are all VERY BIG. Go figure.

For the IKEA arts, I actually never go to airbnbs and my friends don't even put arts on their walls so I don't know that there are other people also using the same IKEA arts. Will that be OK? 😂

Chaise longue. LONG. Like it’s long. Not longe. (Yeah I’m french) 2:13
Also mmm color, if you know color theory a bit, you can get out of boring “I have no opinion” grey. Or live in an Ikea showroom and deal with it. Neutrals + complimentary dashes is easy for example. Your place looks like an office to me (but it’s very subjective).
Also : yeah have taste. Your place reflects you. Don’t hesitate on something super dashing. There is this thing in a composition called the punctum, it’s where the eye is supposed to go. White and black are NOT colors. They are the absence of it. Like opinions.

About the big sofas. It is something of a bragging right how big sofa is. The craziest story is that the sofa was so big that it needed to go through the balcony(apartment building). I still think it should be big enough to take a nap.
