    I got this game along with a dreamcast and nfl 2k, holiday season 2000 and was blown away by the graphics ! Easily one of the best fighting games of all time with an amazing fighting and counter system ! I spent years upon years playing it non stop. Back in 1999-2000 those graphics were breathtaking and still look amazing 20+ years later ! The dreamcast version will always be my favorite, it was so sharp and vibrant.

      @@tanmy85 it was pretty shocking because the console was still a new system on the market. I was in middle school at the time, and everybody was talking about ps2 this, ps2 that. Everybody had just gotten dreamcasts but were already prepared to forget it once ps2 started nearing it's release. I kept on playing my dreamcast for years however, even after picking up its spiritual successor, the OG xbox holiday season 2002 (some of the sega team went to work under Microsoft's umbrella).

    • @PixelShade
      @PixelShade 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@poncho828 Of course it could. It uses the DOA engine, they just needed to design it around the hardware. It was initially going to be developed for the dreamcast. If you look at Ninja Gaiden, it's basically just the DOA engine teleporting the character to different arenas, every time you go through a door, jump in a hole etc the angles are fixed. meaning that the next room isn't really being rendered until "the switch" has occurred. These different rooms/stages doesn't have to be more demanding than a DOA2 stage, heck the different room/stages doesn't even have to be connected to one another. That's why they were able to get the game up to both impressive visuals and frame rates. Dreamcast Ninja Gaiden would most likely also have been 60fps.

Releasing late in the generation and costing a lot of money can easily kill a console on a rival just look at the PS3 that was one of its major problems originally but it was able to catch up.

    I love both versions, though i didnt have a Dreamcast growing up (Only had one for a little bit) i decided to get the PS2 version. It was called DOA2: Hardcore. I loved the CG Galleries, the English voices, more costumes, a playable Bayman (Who sadly doesnt have a theme song in the game), more stages including Gen-Fu and Lei-Fang's DOA1 stages, and that was when the whole Rock Star trend in the DOA games started i think. Ironically the opening that was in DOA2: Hardcore wasnt kept in Xbox remake.
    For Xbox its a remake of DOA2 titled Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate. In there we have online multiplayer (Which no longer works now), improved graphics, recycled and improved assets from DOA3 so now it controls like DOA3 but much more fluid, faster gameplay, a CG gallery as well but with pictures coming from DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball instead of original renders like in the PS2 port. We also not only have Bayman as a playable character but Hitomi from DOA3 as well. You can unlock her in the game IF you have DOA3 memory in your storage. Why do i keep mentioning DOA3 you ask? Because if you own both games for you can use DOA2 Ultimate as the booster disc for the North American version of DOA3 (You get a lot of bang for your buck with this game eh? lol) Its especially an ideal move to make if you own a Backward Compatible Xbox 360 like myself since the booster disc are hard to come by nowadays and even if you owned them i highly doubt they work on Xbox 360. And theres also a new CG opening intro revolving around Ayane's childhood, a hidden interview with Itagaki the man who created DOA originally, and of course another variation of the more typical DOA2 Opening, but this time its much longer.
    I got a massive soft spot for DOA2 (Hardcore) due to how nostalgic i feel towards the game's essence (Like i said i didnt really grow up much with Dreamcast), but i gotta hand it to DOA2 Ultimate. It just has SO MUCH stuff jam packed in there. It's not to say theres no value in getting DOA2, since you would be getting the original experience. DOA2 Ultimate wins this one despite the more muted or "realistic" colors.

    Well Xbox version wins when like for like stages were compared. Why? Better lightening effects, slightly higher geometric detail, better textures, and the cut scenes seem to run at higher FPS. Now with that said, the Dreamcast has amazing color, and the image is relatively clean when using VGA. Xbox usually has darker gamma setting internally so the highlights never appear as strong. On the flip the DC is really good highlights from blues, to reds and magenta colors pop. So if there's one thing Sega nailed with the DC, it was the internal color rendering which sticks out even among current gen hardware.

It could reduce the color output in half and still achieve the same results with 32 bit tile cached down sampling. Sega's arcade experience using RGB paired with the Dreamcast impressive hardware produced a look unique to the DC. You can often tell DC games apart simply by the color and clarity. PS2 display was muddy and washed out looking. Xbox color had too much gamma but could produce a high contrast image. Gamecube is in the middle between the DC and Xbox often producing colorful imagery but missing highlight detail.

DC could take the same 32bit color mode and output to 16 bit dither mode with mild IQ lost to save bandwidth when needed. To get more technical DC had 7 buffer formats including; 888 for 24bit color without alpha, and 8888 for 32bit ARGB including alpha channel. Because Dreamcast was tiled based it's 800 mbps performed closer to 6 gbps due to tiling and it's on chip Z buffer. The Xbox version is what the PS2 version should have looked like, but instead it wound up looking worst then the Dreamcast version, a less powerful console.
    Gamers were told the PS2 version was suppose to have better visuals then the Dreamcast version. I traded in my Dreamcast version for another game, and later bought the PS2 version and i could not spot any difference. Then later i realized it actually looks worse then the Dreamcast version (much more aliasing).

    • @PPHDocumentaries
      @PPHDocumentaries 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @AnEn If your talking about PS2`s supposed 4mb of Ram, that claim was either a mistake by a Sony rep, or by gaming journalist. The 4 MB was for its frame buffer which was separate from its main Ram. The PS2 video ram is within the 32 MB of main Ram on its system.
      Also the PS2 did have a form of texture compression and Anti aliasing, the PS2 was just difficult to program for.
      Also the claim by Itagaki that the Xbox is 500 times more powerful is a huge exaggeration. The PS2`s cpu is more powerful then the Xbox`s cpu. Many people think the Xbox has a more powerful cpu because it has a much higher clock speed then the PS2. But clock speed does not measure overall performance. The PS2`s 64 bit cpu combined with certain other features make the PS2`s CPU more powerful.
      Floating point unit measures the overall performance of the PS2`s and Xbox`s cpu`s. The PS2`s CPU has a Floating point unit performance of 6.2 gigaflops. While the Original Xbox has 2.9 gigaflops.
      The Original Xbox has a more powerful GPU and more ram then the PS2.
      And the reason DOA2 for the PS2 use interlacing resolution, while the Dreamcast and Xbox version used Progressive scan resolution, was because Sony did not give developers access to the PS2`s
      Progressive scan mode til 2002. And DOA2 for the PS2 came out in the year 2000. powerful

    • @anen9332
      @anen9332 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, you're not being honest as far as the PS2's issues with textures.
      The palletised textures/cluts form a type of "compression", sure, if you want to play semantics. But this was highly limited and compounding for PS2. It was largely pyrrhic, as it pushed low quality -- as the PS2 had an abundance of 4-bit textures due to these tech constraints -- which meant that, likewise the outcome created a lack of variation in texture depth and color.
      Lack of modern compression compared to the other machines is what we're discussing, and the results are circular: a lack of texture variation, clarity and color depth in PS2 releases.
      The machine lacks for vram due to compression issues. This is a traceable fact. And we can see the outcomes on textures, which are extremely poor on average.
      The PS2's texturing abilities were very limited compared to Xbox, without even considering issues such as lights/shaders.
      Just as you're not being honest as far as resolution output. The PS2's games output at an interlace signal throughout the generation with some notable exceptions; if your argument was truly accurate, and the PS2 had no trouble with this after 2001, then the issue should have been solved from 2002 and beyond. The majority of PS2 software remained interlaced/sub-480p throughout its shelf life.

      @@anen9332 The PS2 served as a GPU also but not completely, it also has a GPU which could produce many effects in Software. Just not as much as Xbox and Gamecube.
      When it came to graphic capabilities the PS2 was close to an Xbox. With Xbox being the more powerful console overall but not by much.
      The PS2 best looking games rival Xbox best looking games despite the fact that the PS2 was much more difficult to program for. So the Xbox was not a big jump in power from the PS2.

    • @anen9332
      @anen9332 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PPHDocumentaries You clearly know very little about the PS2, or these devices.
      The Emotion Engine was largely the GPU and CPU, combined. It's well known that the PS2 was not a machine designed around a modern GPU setup with lots of frontend suites; the GS -- Graphics Synthesizer -- was not a GPU in any truly meaningful sense.
      The PS2 worked through the EE and its VPUs -- with VPU0 only managing a true throughput of 10% or less on average, which created another major hardware bottleneck -- which, again, means that your GFlops numbers off the EE as some measure of "CPU power" is dishonest at its core. The EE was essentially both the CPU and GPU, which means that the 6GFlops number essentially accounts for the entire system's output and ability as CPU/GPU methodology.
      The Xbox was a system that had a separate CPU, which was more powerful in CPU-related tasks, and GPU, which was also much, much more powerful so far as GPU-related issues such as native hardware effects and overall grunt.
      Further, your last paragraph is fanboyish nonsense. The Xbox was huge jump over the PS2 off of both chips, and we saw that in both graphical fidelity and world design.
      Unlike today, where the Xbox and PS4 lines all run the same software, there were games on the OG Xbox that simply wouldn't work on the PS2; again, we can see this with Half-Life 2, Doom 3 and, yes, Halo: CE.
      We also see massive downgrades in games like Splinter Cell or Just Cause from the Xbox to PS2, to the point where Splinter Cell's maps and entire lighting system had to be resigned for the PS2. Lowered for it, in other words.
      This speaks to a generational gap in power and design. Which makes sense, as the Xbox had a SIMD CPU and fully-programmable shader GPU. Those are massive differences so far as efficiency and power off the chipsets.

    • @PPHDocumentaries
      @PPHDocumentaries 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@anen9332 The PS2`s CPU is called the Emotion engine, and its GPU is called the Graphics Synthesizer. The PS2`s GPU functioned very similar to the Saturn`s GPU. Just because its not a traditional GPU that does not mean its not a GPU.
      And no the 6.2 Gflops is only for the CPU not, the GPU. I don`t where you get these dumb ideas from. Just because CPU is used to add more effects on the PS2 that does no mean the PS2 does not have a GPU.
      Eyes don`t lie people do. Their are plenty of side by side comparison videos on youtube between Xbox and PS2 games and for the most part the differences are subtle.
      And i own the PS2, Xbox and GameCube with plenty of games. And My Xbox HD component cable is of a higher quality them my PS2 one. And theirs still not a big difference in visual quality.
      The PS2 processor is not only more powerful then its contemporary competitors I.E Xbox, Gamecube and Dreamcast, but it was also more powerful the any of the processors on a commercial Desktop PC for a little while.
      And i should have mentioned that their are plenty of PS2 games which run on Progressive scan resolution. For example; Tekken 4; 5 and Dark Resurrection, Soul Calibur 2, Both God Of Wars, Gran Turismo 4, Black, Destroy All Humans, Fight Night and many more. And all those games with progressive came after Sony gave developers tools to access the progressive scan mode which was back in 2002, at a time when the Dreamcast was dead. I read it in a gaming magazine back in the day. It was not something i pulled out my poophole.

    Dreamcast versions of games have almost systematically outperformed their Ps2 counterpart visually. A lot of people assume that this is due to poor ports and little care given to the Ps2 version of games, but this is demonstrably not true, in fact the opposite is true. Most Ps2 ports benefitted from extra care and attention from the developer, with many visual and gameplay features added and refined.
    Furthermore, there was understandably a great incentive in making the Ps2 version of games the best available since it had by far the largest player base. The Dreamcast games were often rushed out the door and under featured (F355 challenge even lacked a full replay mode) . Dead or alive 2 on PS2 for instance sported new levels, many more costumes, new visual effects, and still managed to look inferior to the DC version overall. Same story for Le mans 24, Ecco, and many more.
    The reality of the situation is that the Dreamcast had genuine Hardware advantages relative to the PS2 like a much larger video memory pool combined with VQ texture compression. I am hopeful that one day, various source codes of PS2 games such as Virtua fighter 4 and MGS2 will leak and will be successfully ported on Dreamcast with results that I am sure will surprise more than one.

    I'd say due to that, the DC was struggling to maintain it's level of detail at 60fps, where if the Naomi ver were a straight port to XBOX, there would only be room for upgrading.

There are a couple scenes where I think the Xbox is an improved design but maybe I’m biased because I grew up with the Dreamcast Version first. It is offputting to me to watch the Xbox version. The Xbox version almost looks generic despite the extra detail. For example there is the one outfit difference where on the Dreamcast she has that gigantic pink bow on her back and the other one is a more muted outfit. That giant pink bow is going to have a visual impact and remain in my memory a lot more than that generic costume on the Xbox version. I really like both consoles but for me and what I like Dreamcast wins. I’d be curious if they played any different.

    I had the Dreamcast version I dont know how I was playing this game with that controller. I think I updated the controller to Mad Catz controller that has a better D-Pad but the Dreamcast just gives me a good Nostalgic feeling. The Xbox version just has some visual update but Dead or Alive 4 looks better

    With the effects and extra enhancements from the DOA3 engine, the Xbox version of DOA2 looks great but I do like the more anime looking features and character lighting in the DC version. Overall, both version are pretty great and stack up against each other.

      Maybe it could be the output that made the xbox version washed out. You can see that there are more polygons were pushed on the xbox however bad output could result in an unfavorable outcome.

      @@ericb914 To make it clear, if you bought DoA2 on Dreamcast release it had awesome graphics, if you bought it day 1 on Xbox it was like, yeah, a bit better graphics, whatever. It was good on XBox but would have been mindblowing on dc if not Soul Calibur and Power Stone existed previous. Not to get it wrong, DoA2 at that time looked awesome and slightly better than Soul Calibur but Soul Calibur raised a standard and the artstyle was more impressiv. In comparission DoA2 improved Soul Calibur the same amount like DoA ultimate compared to AoA2 on DC, a bit, slightly.

    The colors are so oversaturated in the Dreamcast version.

    • @LukeMM95
      @LukeMM95 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Dreamcast version is "vibrant". The colours were meant to pop in order to grab the player's attention. The Xbox version is clearly superior on a technical level but the more realistic colour scheme kind of goes against the original game's aesthetic.

    • @GraveUypo
      @GraveUypo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LukeMM95 not really, the colors are like that because the lighting sucks and the characters don't sit well in the scenery. gotta remember that the same team made both games. if they made the xbox version when they had more power available, it was obviously what they intended from the start.

      To be fair, the Xbox version came out 5 years later, the DC was technically the weakest console of the generation being the first one out and Xbox was the strongest and latest one. Also, the head of Sega helped build the Xbox as well.
