    The world of digital guitar right now seems to be trending in the direction of "Profiling" or "Capturing" - TONEX was the cheapest option (and most accurate) until NAM came along....But I've seen a few naysayers - is it worth a look? I think so.

    I like ToneX, just very good piece of gear. Integrated it into my small pedalboard, works just fine. A good thing about the "gain" knob, actually, that it does not try to predict how a real amp would react on turning the gain knob. What it does, according to their manual, is just higher or lower input signal level, one can see it as a clean boost pedal which does not distort at all.

    ToneX is the first digital solution I've been totally 100% happy with, and I've tried almost all of them, Kemper, Helix, Iridium, Headrush, Fractal, etc. Don't know what it is, but there's just something about the sounds and feel that I really like. Integrates perfectly into my pedalboard, or if it's a light session gig where I know I'll need a couple of basic tones and I'll be going direct, I can stick it in my guitar case and go. If they found a way to add a simple delay to it (come on IK, the hardware is there to do it, if it can do reverb it can do delay too with a firmware update) I'd honestly be fine using just the ToneX live with no added external effects.

The null tests confirmed what I was hearing. They’re all great options, but to have the two most accurate options be free or only $299, respectively, is amazing.

  • @psc502

    Perhaps the best feature is that each capture can become like an individual plugin in your daw making revamping basically instantaneous by just adding ToneX to a dry track. Copy multiple drys and add any captures you want to each. Kemper and QC would require your to play the track run it out to the unit the back into your computer for each track. HX and Fractual work the same way to multitrack Amp models over different tracks. Amplitude and Tonex can put 3 ToneX capture on 1 track in stereo and you don't have to reamp your dry take it's basically instantaneous aside from creating the initial amo captures in ToneX.

  • @jimmcdougall9973

    I believe they have the other profiler makers (even the modellers) scratching their heads as to what direction to take next. It’s almost what I’ve been wanting from Kemper, a floor unit with everything except the profiling ability. After all, at the end of the day, I’m not going to profile my own amps and, even if I did want to, there’s someone that can do a far better job of it than I can. I know I’m not alone with these requirements.
    Still, will be interesting to see if Mr Kemper has a new rabbit in his hat. He’s the genius that started the profiling angle…

    Playing with captures (through nam, and using eq to simulate a cab rather than ir's) has been a really interesting experience for me, where it feels more like my computer has become an amp, in contrast to helix native which feels maybe like playing a recording.
    After tweaking helix native I can sometimes start to get closer to the capture, perhaps I'm just wishing for some alternative default amp settings with the helix.
    I'm really excited by the tech, and I hope the tonex gets the same firmware love over time that the helix has had.

    Based on something Leon Todd said recently, I think there is a gap to be filled regarding tone searches. As John pointed out, quite a bit of effort is necessary to find the tone you’re looking for, regardless of the capture technology you use. Maybe AI could be used to analyze all “profiles” in a database and allow the user to sort them by “sound signature”, for lack of a better term, or from clean to heavily distorted sounds. That would be extremely useful.

    Mine arrived yesterday. I'd planned on putting in the loop of the Stomp as my backup rig. However, when I compared the tones that I liked in Tonex with what I'd dialed in on the Stomp, I can't say they're better. Maybe slightly different but the 3.5 cabs on the Stomp have made that modeler great sounding. So....I'm on the fence as to whether to keep it. If you don't already have a modeler, I'd say it's a no-brainer....add a couple of pedals and a tuner and you're done. But, if you have a Stomp/Helix or Fractal, I'd suggest passing.

    • @newstuff1107

      I think the Tonex pedal is great, but the HXStomp can do it all with the same quality, and a lot more with all the incredible pedals it’s including. Thing with Tonex is that you need to spend time identifying the captures that suit you. Most of the best I've found - "Dream 65 Clean", "64' Vox AC30 Adv", "AF3 Marshall 1959 SL Plexi 100W", "UR Divided Gain 1" do provide a more 3-dimensional tone than modelers. Agree that the software is a bit janky, but once you get through the tone identification process, you just load up on the pedal with them and set and forget for 6 months-year later when you might do some more exploring. In my opinion, the user uploads have a wide berth of quality tones, and many are mediocre, but think that when you find the ones you like, they tend to far exceed the IK company presets by a mile, so just focusing on Joe's Dumble or other IK presets is not a true representation of the potential for Tonex. The user uploads are where it's at. That said, great playing man. Always enjoy hearing your compositions daily!

    • @latontolog
      @latontolog ปีที่แล้ว

      It's funny you say the best tone models "provide a more 3-dimensional tone than modelers" -- aren't "Dream 65 Clean" and "AF3 Marshall 1959 SL Plexi 100W" just tone models made from modelers? (UA Dream and Amplifire 3, respectively)

    • @tah5w
      @tah5w ปีที่แล้ว

      @latontolog Good and fair point. I guess I mean that I find that Tonex gives the opportunity to have the best tones, from all types of amps and modelers, at a much cheaper cost and that finding them among the user uploads is key.

    ToneX looks like a cool and useful product, but ultimately, if I want a "specific tone" to sound the same "on my own gear," then I think "tone matching" is probably the only way to accurately achieve that.
    Here is a link to a video called "Guitar Tone Copy Machine" by Jason Zdora: th-cam.com/video/mn-jAusXARI/w-d-xo.html
    In it, he demonstrates how to make the Capture. I "believe" this may be a way to use my guitar and HX Stomp Amp and Cab as the "Target" playback device in the Tone Analysis procedure. So when the EQ is produced, it will accurate reproduce the Source Tone.

    Dream user here, I've tried the Tonex and there are some great sounding captures but I still love my Dream for how easy it is to dial in a tone on the fly. With a few quick tweaks you can have a vastly different sound on the Dream. But with Tonex, if you find a capture you like but you wish it had just a little more XYZ, well, the EQ controls can only do so much, so you need to go back to the software to see if you can find something similar. That's the workflow with Tonex unless you have your own amps that you can do captures of.

When a unit gives you more than the original it mimmicks that is a good this, the bigger the sound window the better. Who cares if your amp sim does 90 or 95 or 100% accuracy. The point is in sounding good. Even a bit further...do two original units over the years sound the same? One is stored in an attick, the other did a tour all over Europe.
