That's where I use it, on door hinges and the like. Worst I've seen is the black tar axle grease used inside a reel. I guess if it says grease...... best wishes Gary
I think some of these older avets suffered from anti reverse failures. Avet changed something in the design and use to offer a free part upgrade. Regardless these older slower gear ratio ones make decent surface iron reels or #30 line live bait reels. A couple notes on this video. First I think this older avet's drag element is just held in place by a spring in a groove. Second on my avets I unscrew the reel foot and put grease between the reel frame and the foot, in addition to the screws holding the foot down. This area is a common area that saltwater gets trapped in and corrosion sets in on the screws plus reel foot.
Thank you. I did not see.a clip for the drag washer. There was a clip on the tail side that holds the rear shaft and bearing assembly cap in place. Nice tip on the reel seat. If there is a fault with aluminum it is the corrosion issue - Dennis
hi it would be awesome if you could make a video on a penn international v ,i have a topless 16vs (the early 16vs the one that looks like the vsx) and i would like to service it since i just got it second hand.Keep up!
Wondered how you would remove a bearing that was corroded in place to the reel body. It is the drag bearing and the gear is also stuck in place! Thanks, Rick
You may want to try heating the gear shaft with a plumber's torch for a short 20-30 seconds. Just heat it at the exposed tip and be careful not to burn the side plate or yourself. The heat should help free it from the rust. - Thanks for asking - Dennis
That grease you removed is called aqua grease. It's a anti corrosion grease like the brand corrosion x . thank stuff is tacky sticky. Like silly puddy. Great for marine application where you don't water to get in. Just don't use the stuff were there's moving parts. It will clog it up.
That's the grease that Avet's come with from the factory. Two Avet's I purchased two years ago had it. Seigler uses it as well.... I'm not a fan and I replaced it with Yamaha grease....
I will add this to my request list. I do not have an Avet in my shop at the moment. I will try to do that. It is a rather simple process if you have the replacement parts. The click tongue is held in place with an "E" clip on most of those reels. You would remove the clip, then the tongue and small washer and substitute the worn part(s) the reassemble - Thanks for asking - Dennis
Dennis, been following you for over a year now great videos. Learning a lot from you. The question is I have an Avet 4.1:1 and the anti reverse is slipping every now and then. Can you help me out with this?
It sounds like it is accumulated dirt or dried grease on the inside. A good cleaning and flush with a penetrating oil would restore the function - Give it a try - Dennis
Good to know. If there is one grease that I hate inside fishing reels it is the Lithium greases, especially the ones that come in spray cans. Folks that use it should see what happens when that stuff dries and collects dirt. Thanks
The A/R slip is due to either dirt in the A/R clutch or too much oil. In either case, the sleeve with not get a good grip on the clutch bearings and the A/R will slip - Dennis
I will add your request to my list. Most of the videos that I do are for customer reels that come in my shop. I will be doing an Avet this week, but not that one. I will do you request if/when I get one in the shop. Thanks for asking - Dennis
I have a gold avet mxl 4.5:1 and everything runs good except when putting together my drag knob will not go all the way down can’t seem to figure out the issue…
I am not sure what you mean by all the way down. Full drag throw to the right? Use adjuster to back off the tension. Down to free spool? Disassemble the arm and reset it by starting at the free spool position. If not that, please say the problem a different way to help me. Thank you Dennis
Avet says that the drag washers should not be greased. They recommend that you clean the washer with warm water and soak, it it is dirty and then install dry. This washer uses epoxy to bind it to the spool. You cannot remove the washer and you need to replace the spool if you need a new drag. Thank you for asking - Dennis
Lithium grease. A reel repairman told me he charges extra if one comes in his shop with that type of lube. Good work, Dennis!
When will folks realize that they should use fishing reel grease and leave the others on a shelf? Do they use reel oil in their car engines???
That's where I use it, on door hinges and the like. Worst I've seen is the black tar axle grease used inside a reel. I guess if it says grease...... best wishes Gary
Got two of these exact reels. Gonna give them a service now because of your video. Thanks for helping.
Fantastic!! One of the reasons that I do these videos is to encourage others to play along. Best wishes - Dennis
Great work dennis

Well it sure did clog up! Thanks for the info and thanks for watching - Dennis

Wow! I have had a lot of Avet reels opened for servicing. This is the first one where it was a problem. Something must have caused it to dry like that
could you show how to remove and replace the clicker on a avet reel.....LX, MX, or SX....thank you

Definitely blue lithium wheel bearing grease. I've used it on my boat trailers. Very tacky high temperature range.
Good to know. If there is one grease that I hate inside fishing reels it is the Lithium greases, especially the ones that come in spray cans. Folks that use it should see what happens when that stuff dries and collects dirt. Thanks
Yowser! What in the world was that goo , lol weird. Dennis let me know if you figure it out. 🤪👍🏼
I will let you know. It is one of the worst ones that I have seen!
What cuased the handle to slin reverse mines doing it and taken apart and no fix

Dennis great video. Can you take requests? Can you do a Service Video on a AVET EX 30 3 speed, and 50 TR-X 2 speed.Thank you.

I’m curious as to why you didn’t use drag grease and did you find out what the blue green sticky stuff was? Great video. Keep em coming👍

How often should a avet b services?
I recommend annual service on fishing reels. Thanks for asking - Dennis
I'm positive it's spearmint salt water Taffy.
It may be !!!!!!!! It was used in the ocean!
Looks like NJ saltwater taffy lol
It sure does! oooey and gooey too!
