On "My Car Story" we're at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Birmingham MI on 8-19-23.
We're looking at a 1971 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible in Dark Metallic Green Paint. The car comes with the 351 CI V8 engine, and a 4 Speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Tod Miller. Tod’s had this car in 2010. Tod shares he likes Orphan Cars. This car with a 4 Speed is quite the interesting option because when you bought a Mercury, you usually wanted luxury so you usually would see an automatic transmission. This car has a few minor modifications and looks showroom new.

Thanks Lou, gorgeous car you don't see many of....
A factory 4-speed Cougar is extremely rare and having it in a convertible makes it even more so.. great car Lou 👍🏼
Hi Richard, Happy to read you appreciate the rarity of this car :-) My pleasure sharing this "great car" with you, Lou
What a great looking Cougar convertible! I always appreciate the "right amount of pedals", but in this one, it makes it rare, too. What a perfect occasion to see this fancy cat! Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this fancy cat :-) My pleasure sharing the "right amount of pedals" with you. You're welcome, Lou
My Aunt of my father side, bought a brand new Mercury Cougar with two doors and hard top, yellow color body. It was a great car and ride so smooth.
Hi ACatal2 (name updated!), Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Aunt on your Fathers sides car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
It was a nice sunny day to appreciate this magnificent 1971 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible! That Metallic Green color looks great, highlighting its large chrome bumpers and large front grille. A very nice interior in brown, with those pleasant wood touches on the instrument panel and, also, on the steering wheel rim. Interesting about the advertising painting on the trunk, with the actress and model Jacqueline Bisset next to the car and the puma on its roof. Lastly, that V8 engine sounded like a cougar was purring haha. Congratulations to Mr. Miller for keeping this feline on wheels in such good condition! Best regards, Lou!
Happy to read the details you notice. Glad to read you enjoy the purr from this engine. Best regards Jaime!
Some people like to shift gears, so they ordered their luxury sports car with a manual transmission definitely rare these days when all the classic cars are rare. Great car. Keep them coming, Lou!
Hi Daniel, Happy to read "Great car" :-) Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou

Гарне авто! Колір чудовий! Дякую!
Hi Сергій, Happy to read you enjoy the color of this "Nice car" :-) You're welcome, Lou
Cougarific, such a wild cat. This was a great displaying, thanks y'all.
"Cougarific" NICE!
I'll try to be careful with my comments....love the dark metallic green color...love the hood scoop. I don't think tht some of us appreciated the 1971 Cougar back in the day because we loved the original so much...I believe it was because it looked too much like a reg. Mercury. Love the dash. Your detailed video showed off the dash really well. The interior is great too. Great exhaust sound too! I wish you could have gone for a ride.
Hi Brian, Happy to read the details you enjoy when you look at this car :-) I would have liked a ride too, Lou
Great looking Cougar!
When I was young, my mother’s best friend had a very similar Cougar - green convertible XR-7 but hers was an automatic with a white interior(hey, it was the 70s).
I love this example with the manual. Great looking car.
Thanks Lou for sharing this classic and for the trip down memory lane!
Hi Jeff, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Mothers Best Friends car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
Nice, I had a 73 cougar convertible same color, mine wasn’t X-R 7 but the motor was the Cleveland from hell, 4v heads 11.4 compression aluminum intake headers Holley 780 the engine builder chose the cam, it had C-6 and a Detroit locker, I regret saying but I no longer have it
Hi Ron, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Awesome car, love the colors (inside out), great condition!
Thank you, Lou, for filming & uploading + thanks to the owner of this fantastic Cougar.

A Great Cat! Seriously looked a Blue one...quite unique. Thanks Tod and Lou.
Happy to share this "Great Cat!" with you :-) You're welcome CJ Design.
Todd has a nice car and I love that it is a 4 speed. When I was watching the video I kept thinking of the Mercury Cougar commercials with the cougar on the sign growling at the end. “The sign of the cat”. 🐆 Great car and great video Lou!
Hi Randy, Ahhh "The sign of the cat" commercials, those were memorable. Happy to share this "Great car" with you, Lou
Great ride, thanks to you both.
Hi Steve, Happy to read you enjoy this "Great ride" :-) You're welcome, Lou

Hi Kevin, Happy to read this one is "outstanding" :-) Lou

Hi Brian, Welcome back! My pleasure sharing this car / cat with you, Lou
Hi Lou, I got to take a short road trip in one very similar to this when I was in college. It was a very capable personal luxery car.
Hi Audie, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the car you had a short road trip in college :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
"That's an angy kitty" 🤣 Thanks Lou for another awesome drop top and a Friday morning laugh. I still say you have the best car show on TH-cam 💚
Keep'em coming buddy 👍👍💚
Hi Pat, Happy to share this "awesome drop top" with you :-) I appreciate your encouraging words, and I'll do my best to keep them coming, Lou
That's a rare cat indeed. The wheels started coming off the High-performance Cougar bus by '73, but when optioned correctly, the '71-'72's had it going on. You'll have to go to a lot of car shows to see another 2nd Gen 4-speed Cougar. Rare when new, almost unheard of now. Love the Mercury's Lou, keep 'em coming!
Hi Tom (and JudyAnn), My pleasure sharing this rare cat with you. I'll do my best to "keep 'em coming!", Lou
Unique car, very cool. Keep it up Lou.
Hi Scott, Happy to share this car with you. I appreciate your encouragement, Lou
🤗 THANKS LOU,TODD…I LOVE ❤️ THE COLOR COMBO AND THE DELUXE SEATS…FOR THE SAME REASON 🥵😂AND IT IS A CONVERTIBLE AND THE HIDDEN WIPERS GIVES IT A CLEANER LOOK 👀 😎 💚💚💚
Hi Budget Audiophile Life-long, Happy to read the details you enjoy on this car :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you, Lou
Nice car and nice 70's color. I like the hidden wipers too, I wish they would bring those back. It shields the wipers from the sun in hot, sunny climates like Arizona and Florida, and therefore, I think they last a bit longer. Thanks for sharing, Lou!
Hi Brian, Happy to share this "Nice car and nice 70's color" with you :-) I agree, the hidden wipers is a good idea. My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou
Hi Lou, This is an awesome car with the awesome 351-4V Cleveland high performance engine. These engines is one of the most underrated engines in the muscle car history, but with its huge heads and performace design these engines was back then the future of Ford / Mercury high performace engines also in racing. - Badly the time times where changing in the beginning of the 1970ties and this small or mid block monster was doomed and dropped because higher gasoline prices, the oil crisis, and higher incurances on High Performance motors.
Remember that engines like the 1970 - 71 351 Cleveland, 4V and The 1971 BOSS 351 with Compression ratios on 11.01 and 11. 1 was and will always be some of the best performers of all time.!! - Love these cars with so beautiful design, and the sporty interior with all the race looking gauges in the cocpit / instrument panel.
I have a 1970 Cougar convertible that is under resto and will be build as an Eliminator Tribute, a road machine with power,. It will be lowered some inches, but the style will be as roadracer from the late 1960 ties and 1970.
Thank you Lou and to the owner of this dream machine. Best greetings from NORWAY - Ole : )
Hi Ole Andreas Jensen, High praise for the 351 Cleveland. Glad to read you have a fun Cougar too. You're welcome, Lou
Bought one when I was young and dumb. It was "restored". Beautiful white with red leather
Went for insurance and found out it was a '72 but the title was '73 and front end was '71.
Pulled the back seat for build sheet to find huge rust hole under seat. I repaired it with a
sunroof cut-out/sheet metal screws. Frame broke after a few more months. Got it welded
for $200,a case of beer and a pizza, then sold it.
Always get under the car before purchase !!
That 351 wouldn't spin the tires, but chirped into 2nd. Fun car
Hi JR, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Fun car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Lou ... FAB Cougar with the right amount of pedals ... we need to get you a stedicam! Happy Friday - something for the coffee fund!
Peter...SUPER THANK YOU FOR THE SUPER THANKS! Happy to share this Cougar with the right amount of pedals with you :-) I appreciate your support. Lou
Just wonderful! The best times for US cars , no doubt!
:-)
This car was much better looking than the Mustang of that year. Very nice.
Happy to read you enjoy the look of this car over the Mustang in 1971.
I remember the later commercials with the Girl and the Cat in late 70s.Nice Car Lou. Do remember Jacoline though.
NICE!
Love that mean lean green machine sounds great
Nice :-)
I loved the XR7, but by this time, these cars were getting bigger and bigger. Nothing like the sporty luxury car it was when first introduced. My favorite actually was the 1969. Both the Cougar and Mustang.
Hi fob1xxl, Thanks for viewing and sharing your thoughts, and which Cougar is your favorite :-) Lou
Beautiful cougar Lou
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car Popie.

Great Cat with tasteful upgrades.
Happy to read you enjoy this "Great Cat" :-)
You're right, the '71'-73 Cougars were always nice cars, but they've indeed grown better looking with time.
Happy to share this rarely seen today 1971 with you :-)
Beautiful car with great styling, great colours, the right number of pedals, and a convertible. What's not to like?
Hi Martin, Happy to read you enjoy the looks and styling of this car :-) Lou

My dad had a71 cougar GT with a351c 3speed manual transmission.. purchased new at Sunland Mercury in Glendale Arizona.. white with the hood scoop
Hi Joe, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Very cool 🥰
Happy to read this one is "Very cool" :-)
Beautiful car. I always like the Mercury Cougars with their more luxurious interiors (vs Mustangs).
Lou, the wood on the dash looks real. Do you know if it is indeed real wood veneer? I know that Ford had some of the best looking faux wood, but this looks like the real thing. Thanks for bringing this car to us!
Hi Mike, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Hmmm, it does look like real wood, but I'm not 100% sure. Hoping a Viewer can share knowledge. You're welcome, Lou
@@loucostabile Thanks Lou!👍
Hey big bro Lou!! INCOMING, man!!! And you just reach up like Amos Otis and catch my airborne floppy sneakers in that parking lot! Moments before it was-POW! And I am left knocked out 😵😵on my bed, eyes shut and mouth wide open, in my stocking calves 'n feet, my girlfriend (makings BLT's for lunch) shaking her head as she looks down at me and not surprised at all as she's with a perpetraul JV baseball ⚾jock and Burt Ward Robin look-alike lol 🤪🤣! That's my reaction to this AWESOMELY Green Arrow green (he's my hero, man) big kitty. KO! I am always sweet on these early 70's Cougars, Lou. I think they are beautiful and have a great, brutish style. I dig the interiors and these Ford's build quality (like that hood covering the wipers), even tho I remain a tubesocked Pontiac guy😜. Todd's convertible Cougar here is incredible and a real looker, man. I admire all these AWESOMELY iconic American muscley cars, Lou. Thanks so much for bringing them to us, big bro! ⚾⚾JV Johnny
Hey JV Johnny, Happy to share the "AWESOMELY Green Arrow" with you. Caught the line drive sneakers. Enjoy the BLT. You're welcome. Glad you're along for the ride, Lou
Nice kitty.
:-)
Wow !!!!!!
:-)
4 spd hurst from factory, YES!!! Joe Walsh has a 1969 Cougar Black on Black 4 spd Hurst..., must help him play ,"Rocky Mountain Way"...(rest his soul)
Hi linked up, Happy to receive a "YES!!!" from you :-) Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
He's right about the hidden wipers, but it's kind of unusual to comment on it as the were so common after about 1968 it wasnt even a question the vehicle would have hidden wipers. But now wipers are out in the open again! Yes, its not particularly "good" because it accumulates snow in there, bit i wonder if it's a federal requirement to have the wipers exposed....

"The Sign of The Cat."
Exactly :-)
@@loucostabile I still fondly remember those commercials with the snarling cougar perched atop the Lincoln-Mercury dealership sign. 🙂
Hmm, this looks nothing like my First New Car at age 18, in 1980 XR-7 Fox Body Cougar. 2 tone. Traded a 1973 Fleetwood for this Ford Fairmont for almost $10K I’LL Take this version any day!
Hi gene978, Happy to read "Take this version any day!" :-) Lou
Even if the fuel was cheap at that time,I wonder why almost all cars are equiped with an 8 cylinder engine...Where as a 6 or even a 4 cylinder engines are fare enough to be used, even in mountain roads....
Hi Iraq Kingdom, At the time, the V8 is what most Americans expected and were used to. Lou
@@loucostabile Thank you for your kind reply...
I had one back in the 80’s. Chassis rot ended its road worthiness. Been wanting another one for years.
Hi Brian, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your car :-) Hope you're behind the wheel of the right car for you soon, Lou
I WANT it!!
Hope you're behind the wheel of one like this soon.
