Mr. Jenkins showed me how to tie some of the older patterns back in the 80's.He and Jack Shuttles also of Newport who had an outdoor sporting goods store also showed me how to tie the patterns that seem to have dissapered but still work great today and that i still tie for people today
Great video. That was a mouthful and I just had to Google that location to learn a little bit more of that area. It was impressive when I switched to "images" to find out dome beautiful landscapes there!!
Oh yeah, I've heard the same thing! I've never been to the Cataloochee area but next time I go to NC or the Smoky Mountains I definitely want to check it out. Thanks for watching my friend Otto the master filmmaker!
Good morning Matt. US Coast Guard Retired Chief. I have a 32 ft travel trailer that I leave in Townsend, TN.I have been going there since 2007. depends on the year but I manage to get 2 to 5 weeks of fishing the streams. Next season I will spend April and May there. As far as the BZ goes, you earned it Brother.
Thanks Chief! Sounds like you are living the high life about now. A couple of months fishing the streams of NC and eastern TN?? I am so jealous! Thanks again for watching my friend. 👍
Cataloochee creek has some bottomland and grasshoppers can be really good depending on what time of year you go. I just got some new ginger hackle so I can tie this up. Thanks
I know, right? I've been wanting to tie this one for a couple months just because of the name. I've been putting it off because I generally suck at quill bodies. (A freshly stripped quill will look like it's going to be light, and then when you wrap it it's way darker on the hook than you thought.)
Agree! I think UV resin is one of the best advancements in fly tying in years. It makes heads so much faster too. And hard/shiny streamer heads do look awesome. :-)
Great tie, Matt! I love fishing the Cataloochee valley, but don’t get up there as often as I’d like. I will tie up some of these for our next camping trip. Also, I ran across a great wet fly pattern that I would like to recommend...”Tomah Joe”. Google it. I’m sure you will enjoy the history and beauty of this pattern.
Saundra- thank you! I did just look up the Tomah Joe (or Joseph, or Jo). And oh yeah... I am definitely tying that one! What a great history, and a beautiful fly. Thanks so much for the recommendation. As for the Cataloochee, I've never fished it but definitely want to if I can get back down there this spring. :-)

Great note Keith! I would love to have met some of these legends of the Smoky Mountains. :-)
@SavageFlies I have met some...most have passed on but a few are still around

Nice GSMNP fly pattern. As always, Thanks for taking the time and effort to put up these patterns. Bravo Zulu
Okay, Arthur, it's been a while since anyone has given me a BZ. Are you former Navy too? If so, welcome to the channel shipmate!

This is the first quill body I've seen you make. I like the clean result, especially after you added the glue.
Thanks Debora! As always, I appreciate you watching. :-)
Great looking fly Matt
Thanks
Thanks Dave! Always appreciate you watching. :-)

Oh yeah, I love terrestrial fishing in the summer! A big meaty hopper drifting down beside an undercut bank can be some exciting fishing!
@@SavageFlies Yes, hoppers are good here where I live fishing small warm water creeks for bluegills, pumpkin seed gills, bass.
Nice looking flie matt.love the name.
Appreciate it Mike. And yeah, it is a cool name for a fly!
Nice tie.love quill bodys
Thank you Jan! I don't tie too many quill bodies but they do look pretty good when you get them right. (Which is about half the time for me!)
That is a great name for a fly, Matt. I'm going to tie some of those just to be able to tell someone I'm using "Copperheads."

Cool little fly. Great suggestion using glue. Most definitely needs if you hope to reuse the fly. 😊
Absolutely! Of course, I probably lose more flies to trees than a fish's teeth. Thanks for watching Clyde. :-)
Very nice, I think on a quill body uv glue is a must. One sharp tooth on a trout and the whole body unravel without it. Also it just looks cool.
