In my professional experience working with addicts and lived experience, psychiatrists are seeing significant progress and lower rates of relapse by prescribing dexamphetamine/ dextroamphetamine to patients with history of methamphetamine abuse/ addiction because of the similar chemical makeup. Harm reduction works.

levmetamfetamine (the spelling is correct) is the active ingredient in generic inhalers which are still available at Dollar General, Meijer, CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens. Vick's inhalers are now non-medicated. It's levo-methamphetamine, the weaker "left handed" isomer.

    • @DingDongDaddyFromDumas
      @DingDongDaddyFromDumas 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

The amount of L-meth you’d be exposed to via a nasal inhaler wouldn’t have any effect on you psychologically. It’s just there as a local vasoconstrictor.

l-methamphetamine is barely active as a stimulant. All the activity in that regard is with the dextro isomer. Levomethamphetamine is just there as it is used as a vasoconstrictor the same way that ephedrine isomers are in cold tablets.

My dad had a meth addiction for 20+ years. My mom too. When I was 12 I developed an addiction to amphetamine adderall pills. I didn’t even know what it was or that they were even related until 2 more years in and than finally quitting at 16.

My son was 5 years old when they started giving him those sort of pills I was afraid to take them off of them because I was being watched by CPS because their mother screwed up not cuz I did.. they lived with me a doctor who did not know my son saw him for 1 hour.. well I don't do drugs but one time I know its speed and I went to a Ozzfest I took one of those pills... well on the way we went to my friend's house we were smoking weed and drinking and we got there right before Ozzy came on and I was still so wide awake even after I went home at 3:00 in the morning I still couldn't sleep and they were years old then cuz I took him off of them and I can't even take them ever they are 20 years old I took one a couple summers ago I was awake for a whole day so if it does that to an adult what does it do to your child?? And then later in life Daniel Junior got Adderall back then he started doing crystal meth and I don't think he died from that I think it was the drug dealer but I will never know cuz nobody cared at the Batavia New York Police Department they said they assume he died from drugs.... that's what these drugs can do for your kids and it's not just me my friends kids we're on that kind of medicine and they started going off when they took them off at the age of 18 doing drugs I think it makes you an addict.. I already know I'm an addict but I don't do drugs and when I did the rock it was for one day and I hated myself... and unlike what they tell you it's not exactly wonderful for your sex life either if you're a guy anyway I don't know about women?? If a kid goes in and they're hyperactive or something they get them addicted to this s*** that's where it is f****** garbage excuse my French but I freaking don't like what it did to my son he's gone forever and I hate myself for not being able to save him everyday I called him you got to stop doing that you're going to die and he did.. I have one leg now I called my son Jimmy I said I haven't heard from Daniel can you go check on him while he was dead that's what these drugs can do for you and I'm thinking the Cymbalta to make me happy and the Seroquel to make me sleep and the Vicodin is in helping me either I think cannabis helps me more and gummy bears 50 mg CBD but they don't want you to know it can help people they want you on the f***** up drugs.. I'm 62 years old I drank for 20 years wasted my life away and now I have nothing really and I quit drinking a lot when I was 38 and had children.... well it keeps me from drinking to know I can drink someday but I get in trouble so I Drink Alone just like George Thorogood LOL there's a song I Drink Alone cuz I can only stand to be by myself but the reason I wrote this if it helps anyone it is good...

its seems that the addition of a methly group to the amphetamine molecule effectively doubles the potency, this is very similar to the what happens with the methylation of morphine to heroin where the addition of the methly group effectively doubles the potency of morphine.

Methamphetamine and amphetamine psychosis is a product of lack of sleep and not due to any inherent properties of the substance. This effect can be seen in patients that deal with insomnia. This should be referred to as sleep deprivation psychosis. The psychosis will subside after regular sleep cycles resume. It takes anywhere from 24 to 72 hours without sleep to start noticing reduced mental function. Cases of insomnia rarely last more than a week but insomnia caused by drug use can go on for weeks or even months with further mental deterioration. People with longer lasting insomnia that is not caused by substance use will also experience similar mental deterioration. There are likely residual effects over time in both cases. This is a case where correlation doesn't equal causation. Failure to acknowledge or study this common link is a disservice to the scientific method.

I have ADHD and they gave me amphetamines. I didn’t realize what it was, they just called it Adderall. So naive as I was, I was shocked when I tested positive on a drug test. As soon as I realized what it was I stopped taking it and have been scared to treat it with Amphetamines. I’m terrified of addiction. I especially saw a quick resistance to Vyvanse which actually worked really well for me at first. I also tried Strattera but had very odd side effects and bupropion I used for a bit but hated the shakiness. Finally decided to live with the ADHD.

As someone that has taken both on several different occasions, I can tell you that there are no noticeable distinctions between the two highs. They're identical. @@dxxdmxn1010 I disagree. I've done them all including bath salts and I definitely felt differences between them. Although, yes they're all stimulants but they still had slight differences. Crack was a short but powerful rush. Powder cocaine, depending on the quality was shorter acting and less intense. Meth, again depending on purity is intense and LONG lasting but comes with more paranoia and makes the thought of eating nauseating and leaves you feeling very unclean and contaminated. Adderall always gave the same feeling as meth. It took longer to take effect but then it was the same long lasting high that made eating and sleeping impossible. It still left me feeling dirty but maybe the thought of it being "cleaner" was just in my head because I knew it came from a lab rather than some Mexican's bathtub lol

As a current meth addict, one part of this video stuck out for me, and that was when you said that methamphetamine caused a ~2000% increase in dopamine transmission. Something that users will all talk about that was not mentioned here or in other videos that I have watched is that both for Heroin and Methamphetamine the very first significant dosage of either drug is unlike any other dose that follows. The intensity and duration of the first significant dose *_CANNOT_* be understated or ignored. It is transformative. Much like the graphic you used with the red liquid almost filling up the human body outline (seen @ 2:38), the first use feels like this, but imagine that instead of red liquid, you are being filled with an absolutely euphoric feeling of joy and happiness. Every fiber of your being is just buzzing, and literally looking at your own hand seems amazing beyond belief. Sex is a joke compared to that feeling, and that is how/why most people get hooked as long term addicts. After that high, your thought is that all the other times you use meth will be like that, (because you'd never done it before) but in reality you only feel, at most, 20% of that same degree of high after that first use, no matter how long of a break you take. This used to be called "Chasing the Dragon" ( the dragon being the first dose high), and as old of an idea as it is, it's worth understanding that it is easily one of the most significant factors that causes people to continue usage after a first dose. If my first dose of heroin or meth had felt like my 3rd or 4th use, then I would have had no problem at all in keeping myself from continuing usage, because I've always had a strong sense of self-discipline and self control, but those first doses just break you. Nothing can prepare you for what I can only imagine is decades of built up, reserve dopamine that is just continuously released like a firehose into your system for hours on end.

I used to do meth, and holy sheet was is absolutely insane the first time I did it. I got a big fat clear crystal in Vegas for my first time, probably came from a superlab in Mexico. It really is unbelievable just how high you get… It’s scary when you’re still out of your mind high after 6 hours, and your buddy tells you that you still have a few more hours to go. 🫥
I have also been clinically diagnosed with ADHD a few times starting at childhood. Real ADHD, where it can be proven by brain scans and neurological mapping. I can tell you as a matter of fact that the two (methyl-amphetamine and the other amphetamine salts in adderall) are definitely different. I can’t take 20mg of adderall without feeling awful, whereas with meth I could smoke a pipe full and be super euphoric. Pisses me off when someone says they’re the same exact thing.
Hopefully you can eventually quit the meth though. It’s fun for a bit, but it ain’t helping you make money… I don’t have access to a big portion of my memory now because of it. What a waste of potential…. 😞

And I feel the rushing through my venes after some seconds, it take 1-2 minutes to have the full effect (naturally it's pushing a lot more when I m getting in action by having higher pulse rate by working or cycling for example) but the time it's kicking in by only sitting with a coffee is much faster, than in your explanation........ How is this possible, or what substance could be mixed into speed to have such a fast effect from... (At the end of the day is the question.. :.. what the hell is sold to me ....???).. Do you have an idea maybe??? Thank you!!

    This was an awesome video!
The first many times I snorted methamphetamine, it was in combination with drinking lot of alcohol, so it wasn’t really until I tried it without drinking alcohol that I fully experienced what it could do for me…
Since then, I’ve taken A LOT of it!
It made me calm, far less aggressive, and more capable of being "present", less clumsy, better at conversations, and also at studying.
But it also often ended in taking far more I needed to achieve the benefit, so long periods without sleep, long periods where I made a living of selling it and similar substances, also meant I tended to end up at Monday night parties that had started on a Wednesday….
I also used it a lot while I was in the Army, and it’s freaking wild that I never got caught!
The few times I’ve been tested, in sports and in the Army, was always when I hadn’t taken any for a while!
Two of the tests in the Army I got told they wanted to test me because I seemed more aggressive, easily distracted, had problems staying on topic when talking, had failed some of my responsibilities, made mistakes I didn’t usually make, forgot things more often than usual, would interrupt/speak out of turn also when addressing people above my rank, I had gotten a couple of stupid traffic tickets by the Military Police (and they had noted my behavior was "suspicious"), and at times they felt I seemed almost erratic….
But both times, it was several weeks since I had taken anything.
Long after I left the Army and around a year after I had left "the substance use environment" behind, I had an appointment with a Psychiatrist!
I had already been diagnosed with PTSD when I left the Army, and Depression shortly after that!
But after a few consultations, he picked a book on the shelf, told me to listen carefully and tell me if anything of what he read out loud sounded familiar - and apparently he had a book that was written about me with the title ADHD!
This was in the 00's and I was in my 30's - and he started me up on Ritalin and later on he combined it with Strattera.
What a difference that made - it made it much easier for me to study and get an education within the health and healthcare sector.
But after years on medicine and psychoeducation, which helped a lot on some of my issues, it was like other symptoms got stronger and then I met this woman who knew a lot about ASD in adults and some of her friends had a lot of insight into this as well - and after having been asked a couple of times about how long ago I had been diagnosed with ASD and telling them that I didn’t have ASD, and on both occasions they had just looked confused at me, and one of them had asked me "are you absolutely sure?", and with the other she had just smiled and then said "you’re definitely autist"!
So, I once again ended up at a Psychiatrist, for new evaluation!
And it turned out that I have ASD as well - so with the BPH (I probably got from taking the Strattera), and various comorbidities, I got more than enough letters to sustain myself on Alphabet Soup in case SHTF!
But my last Psychiatrist replaced my Ritalin and Strattera with Attentin, Aduvanz/Elvanse, and Intuniv!
I get fairly high doses, but Blood Tests has shown that the biological half-life (or is it the plasma half-life they measure?), is pretty fast - the same goes for the Duloxetin I take as well, so I wonder if it’s due to the same mechanisms - anyone knows anything about that?
I also got very high Dosis of Ritalin when I was on that - so maybe I just burn through it faster?
Can this be due to the huge amount of methamphetamine I used to take when I was younger?
I’m also a big bastard, Scandinavian, the Thor type you see in God of War Ragnarok, but just more blond, can any of these factors play a role in why I need higher doses for it to have the needed effect?
Adderall isn’t approved in my country, but I can’t help wonder if the mix of amphetamine salts in Adderall works better than the combination I get from dexamphetamine and lisdexamphetamine - anyone know anything about that?

    • @PsychiatrySimplified
      @PsychiatrySimplified  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for sharing your interesting story. There is evidence that individuals with substance use especially Meth need higher doses of stimulants - this is mainly due to the changes in dopaminergic pathways with previous use. While IR and XR can be combined it’s important to recognise the targets being treated . Of cognition and activity are targets then before increasing doses it’s important to look at sleep and arousal - addressing this becomes important as it allows for the doses of others to remain lower and can be more effective . Something to look at.

It’s the mental part that is most difficult to overcome. That’s why the treatment is designed to be long term. Abuse at high doses can result in longer term issues - but this depend on the severity. In terms of reversibility I wouldn't be able to give a definitive answer as such cases would be seen in greater portion by a cardiologist who may have a better idea. Amphetamines in therapeutic doses are safe

    • @ChardeeMacdennis339
      @ChardeeMacdennis339 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi! I wouldn’t recommend combining the two. Adderall contains amphetamine salts directly while Vyvanse uses lisdexamfetamine as a “prodrug,” which gets converted into an active form in the body before it has any effects. Adderall will start taking effect faster because it gets metabolized in the stomach. Vyvanse starts taking effect in your intestines. They are both amphetamines. Just different formulations. Vyvanse is typically “smoother” and lasts longer than adderall. I have taken both for adhd. Anyway talk to your doctor. Don’t take both at the same time because are essentially two sides of the same coin. I can’t imagine any doctor advising you to take both at once. Good luck.

I get both dexamphetamine and lisdexamphetamine, and I know others who get both as well - it works perfect together!
The dexamphetamine acts faster, but also have a faster half-life, the lisdexamphetamine has a more prolonged effect, but it still burns out so to get the best coverage, I get booth in the early morning, around 0530, and at 1200 I get half the dose of Lisdexamphetamine I got in the morning, and around 1430-1500 I get dexamphetamine again, half the dose I got in the morning.
I used to get something similar when I was on Ritalin/Ritalin Uno.
And I get fairly high doses in the morning, but it helps me wake up and get the day started!
If I only got the Lisdexamphetamine, I would have a very hard time getting up in the morning!

I’ve used both of these a few dozen times each and at least subjectively, and comparing their D-isomers, they’re more or less identical. Which one is superior really comes down to what time of day it is and when you need to be asleep.
You can highlight minute pharmacological differences and make them sound wildly different if you try, but the reality is that they’re two amphetamines with a single-atom structural difference that effects metabolism and bioavailability more than it does any pharmacological effect. They both work the exact same way at the cellular level, and their subjective feelings reflect that.
The dopamine release of either drug is dose-dependent. Adderall can release 10x as much dopamine as meth if you compare 60mg to 5mg.
At equal doses, meth is maybe 50% more effective at releasing dopamine, depending which paper you look at.
Most societally perceived differences between the two boil down to the fact that meth is sold in very pure crystals for $20 a gram whereas amphetamine is sold in low dosed tablets for $10+ for a single pill)
America is flooded with fake adderalls pressed with meth and people using these thinking they’re amphetamine generally don’t have any unique consequences as opposed to legitimate adderalls. They generally have no idea..
The newer drug lisdexamphetamine (vyvanse, elvanse) is basically 100% identical to oral meth. The only subjective difference is the longer onset time. Leaving out that part, I could never differentiate them in a blind test.
People usually get mad when you try to point out how similar they are because of their own ignorance. They think meth is “bad” so they need their precious pills (that they definitely “need”) to be far away from it.
In reality, they’re extremely similar, and the takeaway isn’t that amphetamine is bad; It’s that meth isn’t bad. Amphetamine isn’t “worse” than you thought, methamphetamine is just not as “bad” as you thought. It’s the most inappropriately maligned drug under the sun minus maybe PCP and “bath salts.”
