Fish Chumming DIY: How To Make The Best Saltwater Fish Chum

- Want to know how to make the best fish chum? In this video, Chasten Whitfield reveals how many of the top guides in Florida make their chum (used to attract whitebait, pinfish, and other live bait).
As you will see in the video, the best chum for saltwater fishing isn't very complicated (or expensive). Simply use Purina Tropical Fish Food (comes in a 50lb bag) and some Menhaden oil mixed together with water.
Once you have the right chum consistency, it should ball up nicely and start attracting a ton of bait fish.
The best news is that this fish chum mixture has worked well on everything from shallow grass flats to water as deep as 18 feet.

I had to call around to a bunch of feed stores like for farmers. Finally the lady said it had to be special ordered its called Tropical Fish Chow, at least I hope thats the right stuff she said it was like a meal or powder, so it should be the right stuff. Ill let you guys know once I get a hold of it, gonna be a couple weeks.

@@tomahawk_nole1343 it was the right stuff. but in all honesty Tournament Chum w/ menhaden oil works just as well if not better. Just give it 15 minutes for the bait to ball up. One pancake of the 10ft and go fishing.
How do you know if a spot is a good place to try chumming for bait? What water depth; what tide?

One thing to look for is if there's structure nearby like rocks, wreckage, pilings, etc. Fish like those environments.

how do you know where to start - are you in the gulf or inshore? are you over grass or mud? are you anchored (or power pole)? how long do you wait after throwing in the chum before throwing the net? if I'm drawing a blank, what are some of the most common mistakes I might be making? I hear you saying that Purina is best; but a mix of grain, menhaden oil and water should work, no? or one of the commercially sold chum blocks?
Purine makes about fifty tropical fish foods. Which one are you using?

but now I must ask the question and I realize that mullet are algae eaters well not meat eaters anyways , but does this attract mullet also , it just always nice to have a mix of bait both in the boat and some good frozen bait for after the run .

To hard to hook all those lil buggers .... I am guessing the prurina which noone in my area carries is just protien food mixed with the fish oil ..... And when I use sabikis offshore all I catch are the Atlantic bumper and an occasional whiting
