In this video, I show in-depth the making of the patterned rosette that is the signature of my classical guitars. There are many ways to go about it, and sometimes I like to explore new methods.
This is a very special one: I am making it for a future romantic guitar, inspired by the work of French Luthier René Lacôte. For this reason, I have made this one remarkably detailed. It was a big challenge for me, but I am happy with the results.
The rosette combines Sycamore veneers of different colours in a unique side-grain pattern. It is for my guitar #12, 'Celox', over a Swiss Moon Spruce Soundboard.

If anyone is interested, I have plans for the circle cutter router attachment jig. Please leave a comment so that I check if many people are interested, then I can make a link or something for it.
Incredible work. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
I admire your nerve cutting the main rosette channel with hand tools. I also appreciate this rosette for its vague similarity to the ones that came before it. I liken it to a variation on a theme. For me it’s definitely become your signature. Well done.
Hey thanks! Yes, this design was thought of as a 'variation on a theme'. If you look closely, you'll see that it is actually a simple duplication (and mirroring) of the tile lines: for my other rosettes, there is one line of tiles, for this, two. That's the magic of pattern designs, one turn and it looks a whole new design. Of course, I think the purfling lines also have a big influence on the overall appearance, making it even more unique.
Really inspirational Thank you for sharing your work

Great video. I build Lacotes and Stauffers as well. Could you share the name of the gramil tool that your are using and where you purchased it? I have a number of gramils. This one is pretty cool!
You mean the circle cutter? I got it from the online store dictum, if my memory doesn't fail me.
This one's actually the first Lacote I'm setting to make!

@ChrisCrevelsGuitars you are a very patient man...love the detail! I just discovered your channel today...
What do you call the circle cutting jig a spoke shave you used to make the initial circles please?
Glad that you liked the channel! I use both handheld circle cutters and router jigs for circle cutting. The jigs I have designed myself
