    Great work.
    To add to your video:
    Sicilians felt an added discrimination from other Italians in America as well, which helped swell the ranks of Sicilian organized crime.
    Sicilians turned inward in a country where public anti-Italian sentiment was very strong and part of an Italian immigrant community that did not see Sicilians as “true Italians” and were made to feel as outsiders among Italians.
    You briefly touched on it when you mentioned Napoli but didn’t follow up on the divisions within the Italian-American community.
    Most of this I learned from my Sicilian family and grew up with the teasing/jokes among Italian-Americans that my family weren’t true Italians. It doesn’t have the spite and viciousness of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but it’s still there.
    You do excellent work and enjoy all your channels. Please keep it up.👍

    • @Loralanthalas
      @Loralanthalas ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm from an Irish family. I learned the same about Italians. And Irish.
      (Italians were too dirty and Irish were too stupid for anything but manual labor: no manger or higher for us at the tirn of the 20th century - but no one likes to point out racisim is just tribalism for little egos).
      The Irish just fucked everything until we were integrated.
      Italians were a bit more violent about it.
      Someday, racisims history will be taught rather than avoided so kids know how fucking stupid it is when they hear the BS from their grandpa.

    Hey Simon, love your work, just a couple corrections: The Sicilian term for the "protection fee" is not "piso" but "pizzo". Pronounced as you would pronounce "pizza" but, obviously, with the final "O" instead of "A".
    Moreover, a group of mafiosi isn't "Cose"(things), but "cosche", singular "cosca". Italians will also use the term "Clan" to refer to them.
    Sorry for the interruption, please carry on!

    A friend of mine had an uncle in the mafia, he thinks at least. He barely ever saw him, but he said the only time he realized anything was special about him was during a family reunion when he was 12ish. The Uncle had two men bring in an elaborate wooden chair, in which he sat during the entire reunion, and the two men brought him any food/refreshments he wanted. During the whole reunion the other men from distant family relations and people that weren't even in the family but showed up anyway approached The Uncle and had private conversations and exchanged handshakes. He wasn't allowed to talk to The Uncle. Apparently The Uncle was shot and killed about 9 years after that reunion, and no one ever really addressed it.

    To provide an oblique view; my Grandfather- his family itself affiliated with the NYC Hell's Kitchen 'Irish Mob' of Owney Madden- described it thusly; "We was Irish businessmen, not murderin' guinea mobsters!"
    The pre-Italian 'gangs' were primarily effected as hiring halls and social welfare organizations within a society that lacked any of those things. Italians moving into cities with previously established hierarchies used somewhat stronger methods to bring themselves to parity.

    • @cristianfamigliuolo
      @cristianfamigliuolo ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely true! Then the Irish compared the Italian mafioso to guinea that was an act of mere infamy. The mafia has few strengths and many defects, one of the strengths and in any case the extended family and nationalism/populism which is not always but has often been adopted by others as well. The submission to other groups it is not an option.

    • @floydblandston108
      @floydblandston108 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cristianfamigliuolo- what brought the 'infamy' was an internal murderousness, surprising even to the existing gangs, which was unique to Sicilian and Neapolitan groups. There were northern Italians (Genoese, Parman) who married into our family even during the era when "throat cuttin' guinea" was the general epithet.

    • @cristianfamigliuolo
      @cristianfamigliuolo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@floydblandston108 "A infame" in the Roman way of say. 😂😂😂
      Italian words have a literal sense and a folkloristic one.
      Let me explain an Irishman calling a Sicilian a Guinean will be Epitaph as infamy "a infame" from a Roman one. Nothing personal Let's say Italian comedy, sarcasm, joke etc.
      In Italy there are popular customs that date back to the Roman age and are still in use and costume. I don't discuss your family situations, I would never allow myself. I emphasize that an Italian in his dialogues has ancient memories and personal memories, always for a Roman to slaughter a kid is a practice very common for a local dish caled "l'abbacchio" but it is also used colloquially to alienate a well-known person. Then you don't 😊😊 "incaprettare" or "sgozzare".
      In some situation is a way of saying not something that have to be done.
      But grandparents commonly taught their children to do these things. It was a peasant need to bring fresh food to the table. In the 80s all families had grandmothers who taught farming practices to their grandchildren me too. Some terms then slipped and transferred in less appropriate ways.

This was back in the 1910's or 1920's. I've been curious what the Black Hand was. Still haven't figured out yet if this person and I are also related somehow; there was just enough information for me to establish this was not my great-grandpa because of certain details not lining up.

    it's a good timeline and chronology of the mafia but only a superficial overview. You didn't go into the complex sociopolitical factors that were a big part of their rise to power and maintaining it.
    For example, you briefly mentioned the discrimination against Italian-Americans, but not that the police tended to treat them so badly that the only way they could get justice for crimes committed against them was to go to the Mafia. The Mafia families built up their strength in America by replacing policing function and protecting the people in their territory from being preyed on by other criminals, in return for paid protection or services rendered.
    It was this combination of inspiring fear in people, and yet making people rely on them (even just to avoid a worst fate) that made these organisations so hard to uproot.

And they get away with it because the white supremacy they found when they arrived has never gone away, just shifted focus slightly. Smh

    The thing I hate about Simon's channels is that they are awful at putting me to sleep.
    I put a video on, even ones that are 45min +. I think, yeah this'll put me to sleep. I don't even watch the content, I just listen to his narration. next thing I know the video has finished, I'm swiping for the next one, and more and more birds are tweeting outside. Letting me know I havnt got long to get to sleep.
    Was Simon ever on TV. Because he's more talented than anyone on TV. Even when he's just reading a script like they do.

    And you’ll never see a movie about the Mafioso Artichoke King, which is just sad. Imagine The Godfather but Don Corleone is called Artichoke King.

    Don: 'Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a video for me. But until that day, consider this justice a gift....'
    Simon: ' I've made 15 videos. Today. Just now. And I also started 4 new channels.'
    Don: '......um'
    Edit: continues petty cat

    24:24 Simon stumbles over a name, there's a tiny glitch in the video, then the dialogue ceases to match the visuals. Nice try Dave. i'm sure many people didn't notice !:-)

    Artichoke King, mentioned at least three times, was the nickname of a guy who dealt in artichokes as his source of income. It is not the actual name of someone as this video leads you to believe.

    If all the street people in your town got together and went" Well you owe me $5 dollars for walking down this sidewalk". So you crossed over and were told the same thing. The police don't care. It's only $5..Stop wasting our time. It grows upon itself until it becomes a problem and it becomes too big for them to deal with.
