We use a vise that ratchet straps to a tree. My dad invented it and you can file your chain at eye level. Clamps the bar like the chain meister. The saw hangs vertical on the tree. I made a saw vise almost the same way yours is....that's my traveling one I use in the field on my tailgate! Then I have a regular vise in my shop! I typically sharpen my saw every other tank unless I hit dirt or cut through dirty wood!! I like a sharp chain! Stay safe my friend
Hi Tony, thanks for sharing. The rotating machinist vise was great to see - very useful. And good variety of clamps, ty. Since experiencing the Stihl File Guide #2 and in particular it's firm quick clamping of each tooth for filing, I have not even attempted to sharpen a chain without going beyond the clamping of the bar to the clamping of the actual tooth being sharpened. I have noticed some very experienced hand filers actually finger clamping each tooth as they file it or using other means to give more stability when filing. I'm thinking of a chain clamping setup that is height and angle adjustable which would be quicker and simpler than my Stihl File Guide #2. It gives me great sharpness and I love it but I'm thinking of going to a tooth clamp/vise combined with something like a round file holder that will set the 'C' in each tooth consistently. (If I was to add in an adjustable angle device like the FG2 and a depth gauge setter that works from new to the witness marks, well that makes for a hand filing setup that will do each tooth, with gauge defined accuracy, from out of the box to the witness mark. Thanks Tony, after watching this video I had to do some tinkering and make the c clamp version. I ended up drilling and tapping (8mm-1.25) the stationary jaw of the clamp and inserting a rubber hammer head from a Harbor Freight multi head hammer. It keeps from marring the bar and adds the spacer you talked about. I also added a plastic clamp pad to the movable jaw. I wish I could add a pic but it works great. Thx for the idea.

This is a good video tony having back up saws are important, when you are in the Woods Cutting trees, Have a Dremel of a Round File to Sharpen you saws is important, when cutting trees your saw can dull very Quickly, A butchers Steel is Required when your in the Meat or Fish Industry,
Great options Tony. I also hate the discomfort bending over for tasks . My solution was a 5 gallon bucket. You can sit on the top or bottom. Empty out the small tools/accessories you want to carry instead of 4,5,or6 loose items. Perfect height for tailgate, sawhorse , etc. I also carry a padded throwable floatation device to cushion my backside to set on hard plastic bucket. Keeps me smooth as a babies bottom .👍😁😁😁

Like the vidios and all of the tools and terminology. You have alot of tool knowledge. When referring to the chainsaw correct terms for chainsaws are bar and chain not blade. Everything else you seem to take great care in being correct. Thought you might like to know.

Nice video. Years ago I purchased an aluminum vice similar to the stump vice, you make a cut in a log or pole and then push the vice into the cut and attach the bar. It is super light and fits in your pocket and is great for traveling. I also used a bench vice in a mount I welded up for a reciever hitch. Since I mostly run run square grind I sharpen all my chains in my shop now, it's been over 10 years since I sharped a chain in the woods. One will want to be very careful clamping on the Stihl ES light bars as they have hollow grooves milled into them that when clamped on will cause them to dimple. It will be interesting to see if once the folks using the dremel and round file to sharpen try the Hexa file and profile chain switch to the Hexa. Stihl offers a grinding wheel profiled for it as well. I have been using it for some time now and it definitely cuts faster and stays sharper longer than round grind, especially in dirty wood. Plus its easier to master. Looking forward to it becoming more readily available here in the U.S. Regardless of what method and profile one uses the most important thing is to run a sharp chain.
I’ve been trying to buy the new Hexa chain but no Stihl dealers in my area have gotten any in. The concept and ease of sharpening is very interesting. Can’t wait until I can get my hands on one. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

Tony, great selection of vices! I have a bench vice, a stump vice, and also a stihl electric sharpener i happened to stumble upon. I bought an Oregon stand and just put it together tonight. I like your portable vice. I often thought about welding some square tubing to fit in my 2" receiver, but that would be heavy and expensive.

Yeah, the Stihl electric just happened to fall in my lap. Went in to look at some 2 n 1 and a guy said do you have an electric? I said no but looking at a stihl or Oregon. He said i happen to have an extra one that was going to another shop, but they were downsizing the Stihl Dept so it is for sale. Asked him how much and i walked out with it. great video. In the 1970s I made my own vise and on the bottom I welded on a lag bolt, so out in the woods I would just pound it into a stump and never worried about the saw moving around on me. You have a great channel

That's funny timing , just made a vice out of a strong magnet and angle iron . It works well on the tailgate or trailer . Just sit it on anything metal . Break it loose and store it on its side .

Typically I do have the bars as level as I can but for the video I just clamped the saws in for demonstration purposes. You definitely don’t want any angle when sharpening. Thanks for watching 👍

No tips on how to get the Stihl angled bar feature to work ;) I use a vice on the back of my truck for in the field sharpening but I have got a stump vice just in case I need it and haven't got the other vice bolted on.
Ha ha Alan, the angled cutting bar and chain are exclusive to Stihl. All other brands of chainsaw manufacturers are trying to “cut” into that market. 😂😂

I checked with him and he may start manufacturing them this fall but couldn’t give me a specific timeframe. Try the PFERD CS-X ( copied by Stihl 2in1 ). No power, does the raker WITH each pass. For all standard size chains. Better than sliced bread 😁.

I just use a quick grip and a homemade wooden riser on a short 2x6. I like your magnifying light.

I gotten used to holding the saw between my legs on the ground n can have it sharp in a couple minutes if I don’t lower the rakers.
Tyrone sounds like you’ve been doing this awhile, at 66 it’s tough for me to bend and kneel on the ground so I need any help I can get. Your method sound very efficient using your legs as the vise.
