  • John Perry Barlow is a retired Wyoming rancher (and native), a former lyricist for the Grateful Dead, and the co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a civil liberties organization which has been protecting the free flow of information on the Internet since 1990. He remains on the board of that organization. He has been writing about society in Cyberspace since 1988 and was first to apply that name to the global social space it presently describes. He was a founding Fellow at Harvard Law School's Berkman Center for Internet and Society and is presently engaged in starting a company, Algae Systems, that aspires to turn sewage into carbon negative jet fuel. He is the father of three daughters and his primary aspiration is to be a good ancestor.
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

    Mr Barlow is way under rated as a man of thinking.

    I worked at the Bar X Ranch in Cora WY, summer of 1982 with John Perry Barlow the owner of the ranch and writer for the Grateful Dead. I remember many late nights or after midnight when John would ride back to the ranch in his 68 VW Van. So I get that song on those long road trips to the desert and Reno. On one of those trips he came back and said, "Dean I'm so sorry. While driving I got an idea for the Dead and didn't have any cassettes to record it except those sermons your dad sent me" I said, "No problem John, my dad loved to preach on the resurrection and maybe your record company will listen to his side thinking you've come up with some really wild lyrics for a Dead song and they'll publish it." He responded, "That would just be God's good humor wouldn't it." We both laughed and hit the hay. BTW I slept in the same bunk JFK JR. slept on a few summers earlier when "I became a man at the Bar X" he wrote later in a George Magazine editorial I ran across in an airport. I too received my calling from God at the Bar X that summer to become an urban pastor and now missionary with my OB/Gyn wife in rural Kenya.

    I appreciate his conclusion, but he and everybody in Marin county would have Alex Jones and Trump and many others silenced. This has happened to all of my old hippie friends up there by osmosis. Up there, you lose your step, you fall out of grace

    I wonder how he'd feel now, about Trump and "fake news" and people like Alex Jones.

      information warfare wouldn’t use a dream/delusion/illusion? Watching the Russians use mind control subterfuge and USA in 1949 I thought I saw the same thing here also. Just watch and pray. Watch because creator gave you 2 lense to see and I pray magnify Truth and Beauty of process of creation, Creator and created. A nice Trinity, no? I really can’t imagine an information war that wouldn’t include propaganda and, of course, casualties. Horrible but war is horrible. Casualties leave dead and maimed bodies. The cognitive domain is very interesting but here we are as Michelangelo hinted to us in the Creation of Adam. That’s a human brain Creator is depicted in

      @Ami Deus and further how in the world do you imagine Trump and his friends and family would dare go up against the mess we’ve had since forever. It just doesn’t make sense that they would engage without using every weapon available. Don’t you suppose the weapons that were going to be used were such that Trump’s choice of weapons showed great restraint?

    • @MrCanucklehead75
      @MrCanucklehead75 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fernly2 And now you're just giving yourself away for the propagandist you are. Trump never had restraint in any thing he did. He attacked anyone that stood up to his lies and exposed him for the compromised russian asset he's always been.

    Should we or shouldn't we?
    What's a brain without a heart?
    Without heart no us that's a no-brainer.

    Revisited in 2022 when the flavor of the day is shutting down unwanted speech. Tolerance is best judged by allowing what you despise mostly.
