What a video. Your example happened to me in real life. I was there to take in a sun rise when the owl appeared! I was so unprepared. The owl was so graceful. None of my shots any good. Thanks so much.
Hi there, loving your videos!! reaching out hoping you can clarify.. I watched your updated settings video that suggests no turn image stabilization off for birds in flight, but in this video you suggest using mode 2. Can you please advise if your findings are better now without vs this video?
Hi Ron. Since the 1.4.0 update I've tested my R5 with a 600mm f4 mk2 plus 1.4x extender in all modes tripod mounted. I'd have to agree that IS mode 2 on the lens gives me the best results. I used to use mode 3 but have now changed. The only downside is a slight increase in battery power consumption which is no big deal with a battery grip and a spare set of batteries. Thanks for another useful video.
I'll try position 2 stabilization on the lens next time out, your advice certainly makes sense, thanks for your time and effort making this very useful series of videos.
I see lots of "Part x" videos on your site but no Part 1. Could you provide a link? (Are all these other "Part x" videos part of the Getting Better Birds in Flight series or are they from several different series - the names are not the same as this?)
Hi Ron, thank you very much for your effort and for share your knowledge about this very, very difficult art of BIF photography. Very, very interesting your explanation about IS modes, and why we should use mode 2, even at high shutter speeds.
Another great tip on getting better bird in flight images, Ron! We are all looking forward to using the tips for our upcoming trips with you. I will share a link with the gang!
Tom, thanks so much for your feedback on the sound. I did not notice anything too bad either or I would not have posted the video. It is hard when you have 3 different audio sources in a single video to get them all to match perfectly. I am trying to get better at both the video and audio with each attempt. Sincerely, Ron
Great advice! We shoot owls and they aren’t super fast like some of the birds you shoot. Would you still recommend an aggressive AF case for them? We have been shooting case 1 with -1, -1. I think we need to bump it up. Thank You
The settings really are a personal thing to a certain extent. We all shoot a bit differently, but I do like my tracking sen. set to locked on and the accell/decel set to +2. I just seems to work for a lot of my shooting.
Ron, great video as usually! I was always shooting BIF in the mode 1. I checked your claim with the 100-500 manual, and yes, they do recommend to use mode 2 for moving subjects. I'm definitely trying it next week while shooting Great Blue Herons at a local dam.
Great video, thanks Ron. I shoot a Canon eos r, would you still recommend the eye detection focus mode, even though it doesn’t have the newer animal eye tracking?
I wish I had more experience with the eos r. I have only shot that body a few times. When I used the camera I found the zone AF to work the best for birds. However, I did not try the eye detection, only the face detection with eye detect turned off if I remember correctly. So, eye detect may work on birds in flight, but I cannot say for sure. I would def give it a try if I had a chance to shoo the camera again. Sorry I could not be of more help.
Great tips, wish I had understood the different modes of the L series lenses last week! I missed some amazing shots of 4 Roseate Spoonbills because I couldn’t zero in fast enough. I did get some photos but not as good as I had hoped. Anyway, this was a very good and clear explanation of the three modes and their use cases. 👍
Ron, really enjoy all of your videos. They are very informative and helpful. But the difference in audio levels from the beginning of each video to the end is pretty big. The first 30 seconds of this video the volume was perfect at full volume, then the intro 30 seconds was way too loud. The following 11 minutes and change was too low combined with the sound of a metal fan was pretty distracting. You may have a nice green screen setup but if I can't understand you behind a metal fan then the whole point of the video is kind of lost. Only trying to help here. Maybe consider investing in a rode wireless go ii or some sort of lav mic set up? Looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks
Sorry about the sound, but sometimes things don’t mesh well when you are working on a very small budget. Maybe someday I will be able to afford a real studio with professional equipment. Being a professional photographer with kids in college does not leave much in the way of funds to do this kind of stuff.
I really didn't notice that much of a problem with the volume. The video quality is excellent, especially the backdrop with the owl in flight.....tack sharp!
That is a good question. Well, for me in the areas I generally shoot, there is almost always something at the range I want to pre-focus on to pre-focus on. Even if the area out in front of me is open water I generally can focus on the ripples or waves at the distance I want to pre-focus. If AF won't grab what I want to pre-focus on, I use manual focus to pre-focus where I am hoping my bird will be when I try to get initial focus on it. Hope this helps.

Oh wow! You are welcome.
Best video on focusing BIF I’ve seen on TH-cam. Excellent explanations. Thanks!
Very good tips, especially about using IS Mode 2. Thanks
This is such exceptional and thorough explanation; WOW, VERY IMPRESSED

Really enjoying your videos on better birds in flight but I can't find episode one...... is it still available to view and if so what is it called?
great tutorial. Nailed the confusion between Aperture vs Manual mode

Thanks Ron good advice as always.

Fantastic advice from someone who really knows what they are talking about. Thank you so much for your time and effort
Hey, thanks so much and thanks for the comment.
Wonderful as usual thank you so much. I'm just waiting for auto focus of Birds in action while videography on R5. You'd be the first to do it Ron!
Hey, thanks so much. I promise I will do a video on video for birds in flight soon. Thanks for your patience.

Where is the part 1, i did see it
Great video as always. The ibis tip is a game changer.
hey, thanks so much for the comment. Always appreciated.
When in eye tracking mode locked in on the bird does the back button focus button need to be continuously pressed on or not ?

@@whistlingwingsphotography thanks Ron, I’ll give it a go and let you know…
What do you recommend for stabilizing on or off canon 800mm f11 thanks for the video
I have found that you can pan with the IS on on the 800 and it will produce sharp images. So, I do use it with the IS set to on for birds in flight.

Audio was fine for me, too.
