Why the hell would the US military make the standard route for helicopter traffic be in front of a major runway for civilian airliners? Surely someone would have noticed that!

Helicopter pilots try and limit flying over built up areas. When flying across populated areas we will choose to fly over or next to a river incase of an emergency we can ditch the aircraft into the water without risk to people on the ground.

The helicopter pilot was almost certainly at fault. Since it is rare for planes to land on runway 33, they got complacent and careless. They simply assumed a commercial jet would not be crossing the Potomac at that point. That biased expectation likely caused them to misinterpret or simply ignore ATC's communications.

One week before this crash, Donald Trump fired the entire federal aviation security advisory committee. In December, the head of the FAA Whitaker resigned after being continually attacked on X by Elon Musk. I believe the instability that Trump and musk created at the FAA may have been contributing factors to this crash.
