Japan's Hinako Shibuno hit a gutsy 18-foot birdie putt at the final hole to win a thrilling Women's British Open at Woburn on Sunday, completing a fairy tale story for a player nicknamed the "Smiling Cinderella".
The 20-year-old, playing in her first Major, shot 68 for 18-under-par to win by a single stroke from American Lizette Salas.

What a self confident, down to earth stunning girl. Golf is known for it's intense need of concentration and focus for hours on end. Never mind the pressure of the world watching you. Yet she breezes through with giggles and humour. What a refreshing burst of colour to the golfing scene.

What a charming girl she is! In spite of great pressure during the game, she kept smile and positive gesture. In this sense, many Korean female golfers should follow her attitude. Korean lady golfers are too rigid and solemn during and after games. Of course I understand their stress and tension to win the games for they are professionals. But what does professional mean? They have duty to make fans happy not only by winning the game but showing good attitudes. Even though I am Korean, I cannot but help liking her bright and opstimistic attitude. I really hope that Korean lady golfers show more bright appearance from now on.

Korean lady golfers are great as well. I regret to say that there's political tension between Japan and Korea though, I wanted to post something positive.
I'm amazed Her smile dazzled not only Japanese but people like you and others. It's so touching. But I wanna see her play more, cuz her career has just started. This year is the first year of her career.

I'm glad to hear that you like her as well. I'm one of Japanese guy and really I feel happy too with her success this time. Well, the important theme in front us for the future is the happiness for all; Her smile shows it, I feel. We are friend loving each other now and the future❤️.
      Anyway, congratulations! Hinako!

Kim In-kyung's insightful infomercial for Volunteers of America speaks for all non-English-speaking golfers resolved to assimilate, overcome cross-cultural difficulties and make good on the LPGA tour.
A poor round is actually a bad day at the office for golfers of any nationality. Attitude, as you rightly point out, counts for a lot. Vivacity and crowd interraction whilst maintaining concentration on the task at hand is fine but not for everybody. Extremely shy Sung Hyun doesn't smile or talk much (not even in Korean) nor does In Bee high five. In contrast, Korean-Americans are bubbly and chatty. Min-jee and Lydia gives articulate interviews; Ariya reasonably adequate ones.
Along comes the unknown charmer from Japan. Hinako, en route to winning a major on the JLPGA, didn't appear to be smiling all that much and looked as tense as all the other ladies. However, young as she was, Hinako has innate wisdom enough to deal with the anxieties of competing outside her comfort zone at the British Open. She smiled away her nervousness, revelled in the occasion, endeared herself to the world, played superb golf and capped it all off with a winsome victory speech.
Cinderella or not, Hinako's exploits might just turn out to be a one-off fairy tale for us all. Spare a thought for the rest: that's the way it goes (love, if you're Janet Jackson!) 😃😁😎

Great essay! What a wonderful insight melted into your writing. Thanks. Only one thing I want to add to your essay is that some shy or pessive Korean female golfers should change their attitude and behaviors not only for them but for LPGA tour. Because it is a kind of festival as well as a type of competitive arena. Fans become enthuasitic for thier outstanding skill and touched by humanitic behaviors of players. Why they play games in LPGA? For money? For fame? Either of or both of do not matter at all as the goal of each player can be different. But it is more meaningful to play under great passion of fans and big prize. To boast the LPGA games is only achieved through great play and humanism by players.

@@khairilanuarothman3869 I agree with you. Keeping the title of the winner for British Open should have been a very tough job for all the professional golfers. Somehow Hinako was a bit exceptional. That's all.

There are so many Japanese people criticizing the translator for not articulating her charm and nuances. In my opinion he did a great job in conveying the key messages. There’s no way he could’ve translated all the snack names that have contextual humor only in Japan.
    通訳の人のレベルはとても高いと感じます。よっちゃんいかなどのユーモアは文化の文脈が共有できてないと訳すのが不可能ですが、ファクトとメッセージは正確に伝えています。

The name of food Hinako ate during play is "Tara Tara Shitenja ne-yo" in Japanese, which means "Don't act sluggishly" if translates literally. But it is a Japanese joke. That food is made from Pacific cod which is called Tara in Japanese, and its sound is similar to Tara-tara which means sluggishly. So its name might be made to attract people's attention.

(participant, coach, viewer)… I will humbly state that this will down (or SHOULD) as ONE OF THE GREATEST MOMENTS IN SPORTS HISTORY- at the least- Golf History, a definite Francis DeSales Ouimet moment. . If this was an American girl/lady/woman the US media would have GONE OFF. An Al Michael's "Do you believe in miracles" moment. . .this time being "the glass slipper fits"...classic. The US media would still talking about it and wouldn't shut-up about it for the next millennium. Alas this was a wonderful young lady from Japan so while the "Golf Channel" and other US sports media gave her due, it was quickly back to their favorite subject "Tiger". . . How utterly disappointing...I wish I could comprehend Japanese so I could view their sites and watch the much deserved fun/insanity - Similar to Tiger 'winning' Augusta. . . . I watched all 4 Rounds and was THROUGHLY entertained. I thought it ranked right up there with The Master's and Shawn's win at 'The Open'. . . Similar to Shawn's win...there was just something special about Saturday and Sunday at Woburn. . . Buhai's play ALL week was a pleasure to watch...and her ABSOLUTE CLASS ACT on Sunday, on the 12th and especially on the 18th Green was a lesson for all who participate in sports. Raising her hands like that, when Shibuno drained the birdie for the win, was PURE CLASS and was a pleasure to watch. Here is a GREAT example of a HUMAN BEING playing sports... I also have to mention Ko's play on Sunday. . . Then there was the Winner's speech- done in ENGLISH... Oh my... is it any wonder the Golfing World fell in love with this woman. In 35 years of watching golf I have never seen anything like what I just witnessed. TWICE shooting 30 on the back 9....RUFKM. I fell "in Love" w/ her on Saturday with that killer swing and enchanting smile. . . . It just increased on Sunday, watching her walk to the 1st tee, smilin and waving along the way. I 'lost it' when she pulled the driver on 12 and crushed it.... hallo birdie... Unbelievable. . . Then the post-game 'pressor' … Best moment I thought was when she asked the reporter if he knew "how much money she had won"... I litereally burst out laughing... Too bad the LPGA wasn't prepared as it should have been for this outcome. It is no fault of the Japanese interpreter, but I think ALOT was missed "in translation" and the LPGA SHOULD have been prepared with a more experienced (sports) translator, they're in ENGLAND after all. The PGA learned its lesson a couple of years ago not being prepared for a winner who did not speak English. It took them a DAY to fix the problem. On a bummer note, looks like we will not get to see the young lady again...Unless she returns (hopefully) to defend her title. The Japanese Tour is very fortunate. . . Thanks again for posting the press-conference. That was one hell of a wkend of golf.

iceisnice61 Thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable summary of one hell of a golf weekend.
Sad that we may never see her sublime skills again. The LPGA tour would be even more exciting with Jin-young and Hinako on it - the Stealth Fighter and the Smiling Assassin, respectively!
Still, if I'm spared, I hope to see her at least compete in the majors henceforth.

Hey hey...Thank You 'K.O.' for the kind words. . . . Happy to hear you enjoyed the wkend as well. . . I agree, the LPGA needs more of this. . . (but according to the idiotic media ie Golf Channel-they don't- what 'we' need are 'heroes/stars"). US TV is so idiotic. . . .If I may, there was couple of other things that I was going to mention, but figured I was running a bit long. . . . so here goes :-)) My heart goes out to Lizette Salas just missing her first Major, after shooting an awesome -7 on Sunday. The missed birdie on 18 wasn't what did her in, as most idiotic bobbleheads will have us believe, it was the 70 on Saturday that did her in. That said, watching her interview, it was a little heart breaking. . . . But this weekend belongs to one "Smiling Cinderella". A couple of other things that got me laughing...Its Saturday, she just birdied 17 and is now tied (or in the lead) and she is making her way to the 18th Tee, where other players would be stoic/reserved/closed off, there she was signing autographs, shaking hands and posing for pictures...that is just unheard of, and the Fans were LOVING IT, the Locals most of all. This also happened on 9, heading to the 10th, but she wasn't in the lead then. . . . Then we have Sunday morning...where most players (male n female) will show up at the venue 2-4 hours prior to Tee-off, well not so for Hinako... 26 minutes, yes 26 minutes-(that freaked the media bobbleheads), prior to her tee-off she shows up at the venue...Then with putter in hand, she heads to the 1st Tee- waving, smiling, and posing for pics... Now THAT is just UNHEARD of. So much laughter w/ my morning coffee. Then she walks out on the 1st Tee, smiling n waving. So cool. Then on the 18th fairway, waiting, waiting and then waiting some more, there she was laughing and giggling...and from what I could see, it looked as if Hinako was the instigator of the "jokes"- and she sure got her caddie laughing. . . . And then we have the walk up 18 to the Green, similar to Saturday, but way more rancorous, it was just too much fun to watch, so different from the norm" . When the camera cut to her and her head was moving side to side and she was smiling and laughing along the way... again I just laughed and laughed...'this is not supposed to happen' in the Uber UPTIGHT World of Professional Sports. I have always stated, and that's the reason for admiring Keopka, "its just a GAME". . . Sports People and Media act as if they are about to "save mankind from Armageddon" with their Play/Game/Sport. Keopka stated, and I love it and the media hated it.... "What PRESSURE, I play Golf for a living"-classic. So True. . . Enter a "Smiling Cinderella" with a killer golf swing and a "what pressure" attitude, and watch the crowd go nuts. . . . Lastly, I have a feeling there are some at the LPGA and the Ladies Euro Tour, who are right now trying to figure out how to lure her away for the Japanese Tour. Better stock up on squid and seaweed sweets :-)) . Take care. Health and Happiness to you and Your Family.

@@iceisnice61 I have an inexplicable affinity for Lydia, Jin-young: and now, Hinako. Like something out of Ripley's, looking without seeing, I never realized that my initials spelt KO! 🤔
      Thanks for spotlighting that.
Well the lines are still there for their own reasons; but, hey, the rewrite makes for twice the pleasure.
In the spirit of solidarity I shall confess that my comments, too, do go on a bit when extraordinarily moved by spectacular feats and achievements. That is to say I thoroughly understand your predicament: one either takes pleasure in making sense of one's exhilaration in the comments or heedlessly plonk in 5 words of 1 syllable just because. There are still those of us who value decent narratives.
Anyway I, too, hurt for Salas her ill-fated putt. However, I rejoiced at Ashley's sportingly raised arms in celebration of Hinako's flamboyant winning putt which could embarrassingly have shot 15ft past the cup had it not thundered in! I enjoyed Hinako's intrepid victory speech in English, nonetheless, though less than intelligible it was. Cute that she prepared it just in case she didn't wilt in the final round and actually go to win.
All in all, the whole atmosphere was magical. Ashley, Lizette, Jin-young and Hinako turned this year's tourney into the most fascinating in many a year for me.
BTW, I looked up her Major win on the JLPGA tour. One can feel the pressure those ladies were under on their turf: even Hinako wasn't smiling much until she actually sealed the win. In comparison, I suppose, the British Open was a breeze for this fabulous golfer, bent left elbow and all, whose aspirations on her maiden championship outside of Japan were limited to making the cut on a links course but ended up scything the field at Woburn's parkland.
Pity Hinako won't be at next week's CP open.
Enjoy the rest of the season then. Pretty soon it'll be Mikaela Shiffrin heaven for me.
Best wishes to you and yours, too, Ice.

Wow, was that ever a nice read with my morning coffee. Thank you. I concur and love everything you stated. I would also love to see her at the CP Open. Funny, I too looked up Hinako's previous play on the Japanese Tour. Oh ya...pressure you bet. . . . I see your into Ski Racing as well. CLASSIC. I have been involved in the sport for over 40 years (raced, coached, official-TD). I was Chief of Course on several NorAm races when she was a young teen and you could see back then, that there was something special about her. Watching her over the last 7-8 years has been an absolute pleasure....SO dynamic. . . I hear ya, soon the leaves will turn, kids will return to school, extra layers dawned for mountain biking and then....it will not belong now until Sölden. Cheers and Happy Trails
