EXO built the new SM building thanks to Growl
Every year since 2013 to now idols of kpop keep covering this Exo hit song in Korea. This was the same song that made Exo brought back the 1M seller title back to South Korea after 12 years of no one breaking that record in kpop.
Growl is known as the second national anthem of South Korea. It would be hard to find someone who doesn’t know it. It was even one of the songs they performed at the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. The other was Power. (👍 to whoever corrected my geography!)

Growl is called "Korea's National Anthem". Everyone knows it and people still cover it until this day! It's EXO's first BIG song. The MV was shot in one take.

The three left are Chinese members.
From 2012 to 2014 exo had 12 members (8 Korean and 4 Chinese) they were divided into two groups with six members each: EXO-K (songs in Korean) and EXO-M (songs in mandarin) this is why the early music videos are titled as exo-k version or exo-m version. 2 of the Chinese members left the group in 2014 and later in 2015 one more Chinese member left leaving exo with 9 members, 8 Korean (Suho, Baekhyun Chanyeol, D.O, Kai, Sehun, Xiumin, Chen) and 1 Chinese (Lay) and from then there was no more K or M sub groups, just EXO as a 9 member group. Lay has been inactive in EXO since early 2017 because of political conflict between South Korea and China. Now, in some videos there are more members missing this is because of military service like Obsession with 6 members (D.O and Xiumin missing) and Don't Fight the Feeling with 7 members, including Lay (Suho and Chen missing). Conclusion EXO is 9

EXO debuted with 12 members. Three chinese members left the group. EXO is a 9 member group, some already finished the military service, currently others are serving and two have to enlist.

Exo debuted as a 12- member group in December 2011. They were divided into 2 groups, ExoK with 6 Korean members who sang in Korean, and ExoM with 4 Chinese and 2 Korean members who sang in Mandarin. They all learned to speak both languages. They made Korean and Chinese versions of their title tracks, and also shot Korean and Chinese versions of their mvs (but all 12 members always appeared somewhere in all mvs, no matter which language was featured) But they traveled and appeared as the 12-member group Exo.
SM Entertainment made Exo this way in order to appease the soon to be Exo Chinese fans when they traveled and had tv appearances and showcases in China. SM's marketing strategy...millions of people in China.
Right out the gate after debut in 2011, when Exo were first introduced to the public...with Exo's strange concept and storyline, many considered them SM's biggest flop...but as soon as "Growl" came out, their popularity exploded overnight..worldwide...and they became the IT group from 2013 on...they became one of the most beloved Kpop groups of all time, having superstardom as youngsters, and are well known as of today...
In 2014-2015, one by one, 3 Chinese members left Exo due to being overworked to the point of injury, and citing unfair treatment by Korean managers....they caused quite the controversy in court to get out of their contracts. They were Kris, Luhan, and then Tao. They returned to China to pursue solo careers in music or acting.
This left the fourth Chinese member, Lay (Zhang Yixing) as the final Chinese member. Besides the fans, the remaining members did not see this coming. It caused great stress and devastated the remaining members, causing them to wonder about the fate of Exo...the backlash of millions of fans can make or break a group overnight.
Because of this, SM dropped the ExoK and ExoM titles, and now they are just called Exo. They are currently a 9-member group including the last Chinese member, Lay.
Exo came back with a vengeance and their popularity soared to new heights in 2015-2016. They worked so hard from 2014 on, traveled the world and back, including the States, and became a household name. They were in such high demand all over the world and throughout all of Asia. Getting an Exo ticket was the hardest tickets to get. They would sell out a 3-day venue at the TokyoDome in mere seconds, and that stadium holds 50,000-60,000 seats. Their tours took them to Dubai, Europe, South America, Canada, Mexico....I as an American, being less and less enchanted with American music, except for some personal favorites like Post Malone, dove into Kpop in 2008 before Exo was created. But as soon as they debuted, I was hooked...it's their vocals that got me.
So as of today, they are known as "The Vocal Kings of Kpop", not dance, not rap...singing. They have many pop, dance songs, love songs and great ballads. They are primarily r&b kings, but do all genres at any given time. All 9 members sing, though 3 are main dancers, and 3 are main rappers.
In 2017, the last Chinese member, Lay, wanted to do a solo album, being a very talented songwriter and dancer. SM said he could do it in China with industry friends he grew up with. But no help with money.
So Lay left with every intention to come back when he finished his first solo album, but at the time relations between South Korea and China were brewing with hatred. Lay was not able to return to Exo activities, hatred was on both sides. So since then Lay has concentrated on solo career, and has become one of the most successful soloists in China ever...but he is still a part of Exo. Until the political situation gets better, we have to wait and see if he can be part of Exo, physically.
That leaves 8 Korean members of Exo as of today....and because of rotational mandatory military service, 2 have finished and are home, 2 left in 2020, 2 just left this past April-May, which leaves the 2 youngest, Kai and Sehun, yet to leave. All Korean males must do 18-24 months of service before the age of 29.

I thought April 8th 2012 was their debut date?
As you discovered, the performance version of EXO's "Growl" is a one take video, which means that it was shot all in one take without any cuts or edits. However, although it is a one take video, this does not mean they used the very first take, it just means that every time anyone made a mistake they had to start all over again from the very beginning. While filming the one take MV they had to dance the choreography about 7 times and this was the take the director and producer decided to use. They actually danced this choreography until they physically could not do it anymore. But, if you notice, not even this take was technically "perfect" because Kai drops the hat in the middle of the dance in the Korean version and he smoothly bends down and picks it up. He needed the hat at the end. But because it was done so effortlessly that most people don't even notice the mistake, or assume it's just part of the choreography, they decided to use this footage anyway.
And if you watch the Mandarin version, if you look closely, you will see Suho steps on Sehun's foot. :D.
In the beginning of the performance MV you start out by seeing 6 of the members and as the camera spins around you see the other 6 members -- There are 6 members that make up EXO-K and 6 members that make up EXO-M and when they come together they are 12 that make up one group as EXO. In the Korean version, you see the EXO-K (Korean) members featured first in the two groups. and if you watch the EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) version, you will see the EXO-M members featured more prominently.
In the beginning how EXO was designed was that for every member in EXO-K there is a member in EXO-M that fills the same role. Each member in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M. For example, D.O. is the main vocalist in EXO-K and Chen is the main vocalist in EXO-M; Baekhyun is the other main vocalist in K and Luhan was the other main vocalist in M; Chanyeol is the main rapper in K and Kris was the main rapper in M; Sehun is the lead rapper in K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in M; Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M; and then it's Suho is a lead vocalist in K and Tao was a rapper/vocalist in M (I'm not sure how these two really work together because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist, but because they are the last two they are put together.)
That's why it's worth watching both versions, because, as you will discover, there is far more than just the languages that are different. ;D
However, what is even more impressive about "Growl", is the fact that they filmed 4 versions of the "Growl" MV, so not only did they have to perfect the dance in the Korean performance version, but they also had to do it again in the Mandarin version and then again in both the 2nd MV versions. And it wasn't like they could use the same footage because the Korean and Mandarin versions aren't exactly the same -- the EXO-M and EXO-K members had different parts in each of the MVs -- so that just adds another element to this.
EXO actually filmed 5 different videos for the song "Growl." There is still one more video that was released as part of their "Wolf" and "Growl" promotions. It's a drama version that combines their two songs "Growl" and "Wolf" and it's like a mini K-drama that is more like a movie or TV show with a complete story and the members playing characters. If you notice, the camera movements are actually part of the choreography, because the camera is another character in the performance. The camera is supposed to represent the girl that they are singing to. So that is why they are looking at the camera so intensely because they are trying to get the girl's attention. They are each trying to impress her with their moves.
If you look up the lyrics for "Growl," you will see they are pretty much acting like a wolf or beast, that can no longer control themselves around the girl and they are warning her to be careful because all she does is make them want to growl and grab her and possess her, etc. "I’m warning you just in case (listen carefully)

Some say the "girl" that EXO is always singing about and you sometimes see in their MVs is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all their songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl, such as in "Overdose" for example. Or how they talk about knowing they are bad news for the girl but they want her anyway and they can't help it, but in the end they know they might destroy her -- as they say in "Monster," etc. etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life the mystery begins to unfold even more.
EXO got so good at this choreography that they were able to perform the whole thing live on award shows and music programs just like they did in the MV while singing live as well. "Growl" and this one take performance is what launched EXO into super stardom and it's what made them the most popular group in Korea. It's one of the reasons why the government has given EXO the title of Korea's national Idols.
However, "Growl" came out in 2013 about a year after EXO debuted, and up until that point EXO weren't very well known or popular. When they first debuted, many people called them "SM's biggest mistake." Because the concept of them being aliens from Planet Exo and the fact that they were designed specifically to debut in both Korea and China and several foreign Chinese members were chosen specifically to make up their own sub-unit, etc. many people had a hard time understanding how EXO would ever be successful. The group started out being branded as SM's first failure, and they thought Lee SooMan (the founder of SM) was crazy for coming up with the group.
But when the one take video for "Growl" was released, everyone began to take notice. This video was pretty groundbreaking, no group had done a one take video quite like this and it proved to the mainstream audiences that SM really did know what they were doing. Now everyone in Korea and around the world knows EXO and they have become one of the most popular groups that are one of the biggest money-makers for SM. "Growl" has become what they are most known for. EXO even performed this song at the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in 2018.
If u noticed at 3:11 Kai accidentally dropped the hat..but the director didnt cut it because Kai got the hat back so smoothly as if it was really part of the video. And, btw, this mv is a one shot mv.

You're right, in this MV there are more people than in the previous ones who saw them.. They started with 12 members.. 4 Chinese and 8 Koreans. Three of the Chinese members left, only one remained with the other eight. Today nine members make up the group. But depending on the MV there is less, because some are doing military service.

You know what is the best part?
As people below already mentioned "Growl" is like unofficial Korean anthem. But there is a part in the story which I personaly find amazing.
Chanyeol - the main rapper of EXO (rapper!!!), who is serving in the military right now, is also a part of a military musical devoted on 30th annyversary of Korea becoming part of UN. He plays the main role - a guy who want to be a k-pop star and auditioned in a fictional company. The song which is included in this official musical is "Growl" and our boy preforms as a part of this important event.
I can't explain how happy I was to watch this online and how proud of him I am.

I remember when this song first came out it took the kpop world by storm! And back then the exposure to internet and youtube once in a while was a like privilege to me cuz we didn’t have modern advanced devices to stream like now yet this song still managed to get so so big and widespread even without that much exposure from social media. I remember going to schools and everyone was just jamming to Growl altogether ahh good old dayss miss those times

What is the amazing thing is the entire music video shoot in just one take.
Not really 😅 EXO started as group of 12 members. EXO-K promoting in Korean and EXO-M promoting in Mandarin. Earlier MVs have 2 versions with all members just different languages. 3 chinese members left the group leaving EXO as one group of 9 members. One of them is currently inactive due to some political issues between China and Korea. However, he did manage to participate in the latest album DFTF.
The military hiatus started in early 2019. Now 6 members are currently in the military and the last two will probably be enlisting by next year.

EXO started with 12. 9 Korean members and 4 Chinese members. Three of the Chinese members left Kris, Luhan and Tao left. Lay is the last Chinese member left but due to South Korea relations with China a few years ago he has been inactive with Exo for awhile but rolling out loads of solo stuff but he will tell you himself he is still a member. As of this moment 4 members are in the army. The two babies of the group Sehun and kai still have to do theirs.

NCT (under SM Entertainment, as EXO): NCT is a male group that stands for Neo Culture Technology. They are now 23 members, but their number is unlimited, so new members will be added. It also consists of the fact that most of them are foreigners. For now there are four sub units: NCT 127, NCT U, NCT Dream and WayV.
