I moved out of Rayners Lane in 1984. Thank god I did. It’s turned from a leafy suburb I loved growing up in. Parks galore to explore. Now it’s knife crime, urban decay and resembles inner city London.Lovely to see progress in action!!! So sad 😞

I grew up in Harrow. I went to Gayton School. It’s full of drugs and crime now but the video is nice to watch in 2021 from my house in Spain 🇪🇸

Well, what happened to Harrow town centre, it used to be a nice shopping are. I was born in Harrow in 1952 and lived there with my mum and dad until I was 14, when my father had to move to the Staffordshire moorlands with his job. I remember Sopers being the main Store in Harrow and going to the Granada picture house, but what I've seen of it now I dont like. Harrow in the hill still looks the same as does spinner and some places in Stanmore, my mums parents lived in wealstone where mum was born. None of my relatives live in Harrow anymore, they felt threatened and did not like what harrow had become and the people moving in there, so most of the now live on the south coast. What a shame for the lovely old town .

I too was born in Harrow in 1952 and lived in Gayton Court and latterly Ashburnham Avenue until I was 17 when I moved away with my Mother and her partner to Gloucestershire. I attended Quainton Hall School in Hindes Road. I went back in 2017 to see my old home town. It was a shocking and saddening experience. Yes, Harrow on the Hill, Harrow school and St Mary's church are still much as they were but I was sad to see that the King's Head Hotel was closed and is now flats. I wonder if the town Planners and Councillors are satisfied with their "work" and the state of their town...the dreadful high-rise developments, the distopian urban decay feeling of much of the town centre. I wonder if they could somehow see it as it was in the 1950s and 60s even into the early 70s, a pleasant safe, clean and well-kept town, a nice leafy London suburb with well-kept houses, with a plethora of interesting individual shops and businesses and a population of mostly well-behaved, polite good-citizens, would they think that they've done a good job in "improving" their town. Surely they wouldn't,....would they? I think they would be as horrified as I was on my visit three years ago. I shall never go back and look again. RIP Harrow.

It looks like there were some extra scenes added from different times some from 1994 to 1998 and then some from 2003.

Near the end the narrator refers to the 1996/7 financial year as the most recent figures available, so I guess the film was put together in around 1998.

Harrow lost its charm in the 2000s for me. Today it's a absolute dump, beer cans and open rubbish bags litter the streets, not to mention ppl think it's OK to dump broken washing machines and kids toys causally on streets. Rude ppl and no community anymore.

My Granddad, Harry Moore, started the first motor Taxi service at Harrow on the Hill Station in the early 1900's.
The engine on his Taxi used to frighten the horses of the Hansom Cabs and other Taxi coaches, Chariots etc. that were mostly used in those days. Eventually the Council put in a road with a turning area at the bottom of the station steps for his sole use. Horses on the Lowlands Road side of the Station and Harry in solitary splendor in his Taxicab on the other.side. And that was the main Cab rank for many years.

I had give up when the awfully nice commentary fell into the slough of despond. Obviously a big promo for the local Council, this film avoided anything to do with 'real' people. Oh no we can't have plebs in this nice film about nice people. Great heavens!
I lived in Harrow during the early to mid-1980s variously in Kenton Road (corner of Kenton Avenue), RoxBorough Court on Lowlands Road, near the tube station and ten years before at the top of Preston Road, on the roundabout with Woodcock Hill.
This film has nothing to do the Harrow I remember; back in the day we knew it as two Harrows, Harrow-On-The-Hill where the toffs lived and Norf 'Arra' where the rest of us lived. No mention I notice of the thriving music pub scene which gradually went under the concrete as did Roxborough Court in the big Council purge of the quaint old Harrow we lived in and loved. The centre of the town became a mass of concrete & glass which remained empty for years. By then I'd moved out.
When I go back now to see old mates, it makes me want to weep at the sight of the place.
Oh, and by the way, My old Dad worked down The Hole at 11 Group Fighter Control HQ at RAF Uxbridge which is nowhere near Stanmore - that's where the bosses lived.
Watching this film makes me wonder if I should gurd my loins and make a film of the real Harrow.

Used to have independent shops now its betting shops, pawnbrokers and tacky bric a brac shops. We only have debenhams and m&s for decent shopping. I lived there 1970 to 1992 and visited there after annually. The place suffered and stood still in time from the early 2000s as the population mushroomed as did crime. I wonder what happened? From under resources in sixties and seventies to rejuvenated to dump?
