Quite a few people became involved in the bid for his clemency, Woodrow Wilson, Helen Keller, the Swedish ambassador, and the Swedish public in general, according to Wikipedia. But they still shot him dead. After he was shot dead he was commemorated in various songs, most famously "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night", and became a rallying crime for socialists and the labour movement in general. His phrase "pie in the sky" from this song has become a general English idiom. Before he was shot he said "Don't Mourn-Organise!", which has became a popular rallying cry for socialists.
