  • Quincee Gideon, PsyD talks about some of the concerning features of The Duggars which is the family known for their TV show 19 Kids and Counting. This group is also known as the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP). In this video, Dr. Quincee talks about some of the concerning features that are seen in cult groups.
Some red flags of this cult feature:
🚩Men have complete authority no matter what (sex, finances, clothing choices of women and children, education access, and even adult children dating)
🚩No birth control and strict requirements for when women have to participate in sex. Women cannot ever initiate a conversation with men. Women have “7 needs” they need to fulfill for their husbands (and those are all gross)
🚩No discipline or accountability for a dangerous leader
🚩Do not believe in professional counseling
🚩TW: Believe that all issues (including child abuse and sexual assault) have to be dealt with inside the church- no outside or police involvement
🚩Fear-mongering: god is always ready to punish/kill you and the devil is right around the corner. If in doubt, the men have authority to decide how bad your behavior is.
🚩Specific homeschool materials and no outside education is allowed
🚩TW: Rape is seen as “vaccinating” against temptation for premarital sex.
🚩If you are sick, then God is mad at you and teaching you a lesson.

If illness supposed to be a punishment, then I wonder how they would explain the presence of cancer and other serious diseases among infants and toddlers. 🙄

I don't know exactly what was stored on Duggar's computer, but it must have been truly extreme to get that sort of response from professionals. Just in training for my IA degree, I experienced some of those who seek out children under the instruction of local law enforcement, a former NCIS officer, and other professionals who regularly deal with such things. Some of my classes required waivers that, because of the subject being covered, we might be exposed to those things and they may be traumatic. I remember a lesson where we were to play the role of a young, susceptible girl in a public chatroom, and string along anyone who was being sexually manipulative. In another, we looked at some of the worse places on the 'darkweb' at the time. There were images of newborn infants being abused, children assaulted by animals, all manner of horrific material.
For Duggar's computer to have material so far beyond the pale it went beyond that, it must have been truly awful indeed. Some things in this world really are horrifying.

It's hard to understand how anyone who has read and studied the Bible can think this is in any way consistent with what the Scriptures actually teach.
