    Steven Tyler was the person that inspired me as a child to start playing harmonica.

    Harmonica was the first instrument I ever started playing and it was because of Tyler. I learned by mimicking him and the songs. I'm not great by any means, but it's fun. Fun fact, I did catch Steven's harmonica at a show after he played it during "Cryin". Someone immediately asked me if they could smell it, so there's that. 🤣

      Bruce Springsteen plays a whole lot of Harmonica. Could you do one of his riffs etc. Several per video maybe.. THE RIVER intro+solo. NABRASKA and The Ghost of Tom Joad I Think have some longer parts of Harmonica

    Tomlin. This video discussing, personal critiquing of players is a great idea. This was enjoyable and a learning video. Also, adding in your playing examples is awesome . Hope to see more of this.
    Lastly, would be a nice adjunct to this type of video if you add your playing tabs music for the examples played, discussed. Either as a download link or a part 2 video.
    Double thumbs up for you on this idea. 👍👍.
    PS. Steven Tyler was a great choice also. 😁.

    The thing about these 60s and 70s singers is they didn't want to be up there doing nothing but singing. So they picked up the harmonica.

  • @bobstewart9688
    @bobstewart9688 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, please! This was great fun to listen to and to get your reaction. As you observed, lots of times a lead singer isn't doing anything very technical on the harmonica. Billy Joel's harp riff on "Piano Man" compliments the song beautifully but could be taught to a beginner in 15 minutes.
    I'd love to hear your reaction to Mickey Raphael's solo on "Georgia on my Mind" by Willie Nelson from his "Stardust" album. It's the reason I was driven to enroll in your school.

    I think this is a great idea, because it really helps the learner understand how harmonica players can combine techniques to comp different styles of music. It also makes me want to emulate the techniques (couldn't help but get out my harmonica and try that 16th note phrase beginning with the 3-draw whole step bend).

  • @adventurespirit
    @adventurespirit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Good choice! Steve has a number of others he plays well in. Followed Steve's early blues work before he and he boys went rock. Fun to watch his skill progress over the years. I think you should do more of these type videos with the breakdown of certain licks and riffs. So many artists out there, hard to choose who and what. Maybe a little Magic Mike?

  • @kenjacklin8717
    @kenjacklin8717 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tomlin. I enjoyed this video clip/analysis of Stephen Tyler. I like your observations, the major pentatonic right out of the gate, the 4 draw bend lick etc. The moment where Stephen seems to warble back and forth with his chromatica I believe but I think you can get the same effect on a simple 10 holed diatonic. I particularly like the point you mention about Stephen singing through the Harmonica. I would love to hear more. Ken

    It's not so much the harmonica teacher reacts, but the harmonica teacher explains what is happening with the piece. I learned a lot just by having you explain. I'll jump in there with a bunch of others and ask about tabs if possible or verbalize more the notes in the music. I realize tabs take a lot of work.

    Kudos to all harmonica players. He has some ok chops. I guess though I’m more accustomed to listening to people like you, Ronnie Shellist, Will W, Jason R, etc. For non-primary harp players, give me Jack Bruce on Train Time - just for the energy and passion. How about Ray Jackson’s harp on We Can Swing Together with Lindisfarne? Great playing there.

  • @denniswilliams1053
    @denniswilliams1053 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great format, taking a look at the harp in a "non-harp" song and a "non-harp" artist. There are a lot of pieces of harp in other genres of music and thus a lot of unknown harp "players" that are not covered in any discussion of harmonica. I would love to see a more detailed breakdown of exactly what the player is doing but the analysis of their skill level is great. Also, as a member of Tomlin's school...if you're not, then you should check into it.....has greatly accelerated my Harpin'!
