Yipee! I have been laboring all my days with guilt and self loathing due to the fact that my children all have gone off the "path" and it is all my fault! I dread the meeting with the Lord to tell of all my stuggles with this scripture! I did try to teach them to understand all of those principles so maybe that future meeting will be not so bad! Thank you! Thank you! You guys are the best! I so appreciate all of these podcasts!

I was taken aback when President Nelson said he NEVER looks back! Only forward! I’m 67 and all the seniors I know do nothing but look back. I’m so grateful for the plan of salvation. 😊

I've often struggled with that quote, "No success can compensate for failure in the home." Being single for years, I thought that meant that my successes weren't meaningful; later, when I finally did get married and have a family, I often felt like we were failing. I loved what you said: "There is a success that can compensate for failure in the home - it's the atonement of Jesus Christ." Thank you! I appreciate the insight into the original quote and the encouragement for when we feel like we are failing. I think the family is one aspect of mortality that needs the most redeeming!

Dear Brother Smith, you often interject little disparaging remarks directed at yourself, I am not going to tell you that you shouldn't do that, it speaks to your humility and it is part of your charm. It makes me chuckle. I do, however, want you to know how important you and Brother Bytheway are in teaching and touching the hearts and lives of your fellow brothers and sisters by creating and offering this podcast. I know the Lord has inspired you to be an important part of this new and wonderful gospel curriculum. Through all of these wonderful, knowledgeable people who have spent their lives in pursuit of gospel knowledge and through the inspiring insights and testimonies from both of you, you are helping so many, in these critical times, to prepare for the Savior's second coming. And I just want to say thank you and bless your hearts!

I love your podcast I have a lot of great insight. There is just one thing I would like to add you mentioned that it is not our job as parents to be the Holy Ghost or try and do the Holy Ghost job which I agree . However it is our responsibility to create the environment that will invite the Holy Ghost to teach our children and it is our job to make sure that those opportunities are available so that they can be taught.

I love "Follow Him" and usually watch on TH-cam because I can stay better focused looking at your wonderful faces!!! I really appreciate the guests you bring on and all I'm learning💕 It would be a great blessing to have the awesome quotes and scripture references placed in the show notes so I didn't have to go through all the comments or copy and paste the transcript....but if I have to do that, I will because all you have to share is worth it!!!

What goes along with a Zion people is a quote that basically says, God is not waiting for the world to be wicked enough but until His people are righteous enough

I hope I’m not butchering this but some years ago during a CES devotional Elder Holland (?🤦‍♀️) said ‘do not teach them so they understand, teach them so they cannot mis-understand!’ This always stuck with me, especially when teaching my own children.

Age of accountability. When my mother was taking classes on early childhood development she was fascinated to learn how children seem to come to a place of truly understanding right versus wrong along with responsibility and ownership. Apparently according to all of the studies, patterns, and laborious psychology of early childhood development, children really do gain a sense of personal responsibility and ownership of their own actions along with an understanding of good and bad, right and wrong, harmful and helpful. Mother was thrilled to discover this understanding comes together at the end of the 7th year. When a child is 8 years old they are learning to practice that understanding. Apparently 8-year-olds are under more stress than 7, 6 and below. It is because they are struggling with the new comprehension of ownership of their actions, responsibility for their actions, and the epiphany of good and evil.
When a toddler throws a tantrum they are not being misbehaved or unreasonable. When an 8-year-old throws a tantrum they know that they shouldn't be explosive, accusatory or mean. They are dealing with the fact that they are accountable for their actions despite their feelings. It is an extremely difficult and confusing thing to adapt to.
I personally sympathize! I still find it difficult to deal with my accountability, especially when I am in the wrong.
But it is my belief that God did not casually choose age eight. God knows when we have a developed and adequate understanding of accountability. And I do not believe that he would allow little children who do not have a full understanding of magnitude of their choices to choose to become baptized. Because of the mental and emotional development of children by the age of eight years old, God knows that they are capable of both choosing and and covenanting with him.
This is now their choice. Unlike a baby, who has no control over what happens to them. 8-year-olds are accountable to the choice and the covenant they make.
My conclusion is that I don't think any age would do. I do know there are some kids that seem to mature slower, like the autistic crowd. But some kids seem to learn and understand quicker.
I'm not trying to pretend to be an expert on this. Based on my knowledge the generic scientific understanding is that the brain is developing correctly even if the child has more challenges, or if they are naturally spiritually gifted. This can account for why some kids seem more ready at an early age, and some kids seem less developed at a later age.
I am an autistic woman. I mask very well now. I matured much slower than the rest of my age group. I learned how to talk when I was 5 years old. I had an understanding of countability by the age of 8. I remember feeling very frustrated because I didn't understand the parameters of baptism clearly. I am a deeply analytical person. I was a strangely analytical child. For the first 5 years of my life I stared at people. I just watched them for hours! Forget the language, I was probably trying to figure out the social constructs. My slow maturity and my discontent with the details of baptism did not change my understanding of personal accountability. Though as an 8-year-old I would not have phrased it that way. Despite my frustration I still decided to become baptized. And I am grateful that I did.
Age of accountability: Not a casual choice.
Not something I would have considered if my mother hadn't told me about college.

I loved this episode and Dr Lines insights. I had to smile when in the beginning of Episode 1 he introduced himself and talked about his BYU basketball days. Andy Toolson grew up in my ward and his dad was my bishop and my husbands orthodontist. I haven’t thought about him in years. Thank You all so much for your good work. 💕

Every week I love adding to my own scripture study with your podcasts and especially appreciate the transcripts that allow me to add the quotes and special comments to my own notes. A correction on this week's notes though. Dr. Line said that the talk by Elder Oaks was in the October 2003 General Conference but it is not. In doing a thorough search I found it instead is a BYU Devotional, Timing, Dallin H. Oaks,
January 29, 2002. If others are interested as to where to find it. Thanks for all you do.

I have searched for the quote by Dallin H. Oaks about the New Jerusalem. It is not in the October 2003 General Conference, and the key words do not show up when I do a search on Gospel Library. Help?

Thank you Kurt for pointing that out. I inadvertently cut that quote out of the video. It is on the audio podcast. Here's the quote
"Excluding the witnesses to the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants is by far the greatest external witness and evidence which we have from the Lord that the Book of Mormon is true...The Book of Mormon brings men to Christ. The Doctrine and Covenants brings men to Christ’s kingdom,...The Book of Mormon is the “keystone” of our religion, and the Doctrine and Covenants is the capstone, with continuing latter-day revelation. The Lord has placed His stamp of approval on both the keystone and the capstone...God bless us all to use all the scriptures, but in particular the instrument He designed to bring us to Christ-the Book of Mormon, the keystone of our religion-along with its companion volume, the capstone, the Doctrine and Covenants, the instrument to bring us to Christ’s kingdom, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

Why did you skip D&C 67:10-13 and not talk about seeing the Savior; I don't get it. This is spoken of in so many places in the D&C and it is something God is trying to teach us. Why? Joseph Smith talked about it a lot!

We appreciate you sharing the importance of those verses! With a discussion format we don't always hit every topic, but we agree that seeing the Savior is key message of the Doctrine & Covenants.
