    Ever wondered about Todd Sucherman’s pre-game warmup? Every drummer has their own go-to vocabulary, whether it comes out on the practice pad or it’s injected into a pattern on the kit.
    Todd filmed a drum solo at Drumeo a few years ago, and in this video you’ll see some of the cool rudiments he used to build it: flam accents, pataflaflas (“fun to say, fun to play”), and flam taps. Once you have the motions, try playing them in succession on the toms and other sound sources.
    About Todd:
    Todd Sucherman is a highly sought-after drummer for sessions, clinics, and drum festivals. He is most well known for his work with the band Styx. On top of recording several top 50 albums with Styx and playing an average of 100 dates a year, Todd has recorded over 1,000 radio and TV spots and has worked with a wide variety of artists such as Peter Cetera, Brian Culbertson, Spinal Tap, Michael Bolton, and many more. Todd won the Modern Drummer Magazine Reader’s poll for #1 Educational DVD and #1 Rock Drummer in 2009, #1 Progressive Rock Drummer in 2015, and #1 Clinician in DRUM! Magazine in both 2009 and 2015.

    Honestly I don't always flatten out flams when they're played between two different drums - sometimes it sounds thicker spaced apart, depending on what the song calls for.

      Sometimes playing the actual flam is a better sound. Set players play a different type of flam than rudimental or drum corps guys play. With set players, the grace note is played at almost the volume of the primary note, where in drum corps, the grace note is very soft. Two different scenarios, two different sounds. Drum corps flams really have no use in set playing. Like you, I would prefer actually using notes that are not played simultaneously.

    What does it mean to flatten them? Also I've heard those referred to as Swiss army triplets. That second part is neither here nor there, just what I was told.

    • @DrumeoOfficial
      @DrumeoOfficial  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A "flattened flam" means rather than playing the two notes with a bit of a space to create the "flam" sound, you just play them together. :)

    • @colinkocherdrums
      @colinkocherdrums 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To flatten them means to play the flam closer together where you hear 1 note almost as opposed to more open where you hear 2 distinctive notes. You can also open the flam more to almost make it not even sound like a flam anymore. It's cool to play around with closing and opening flams to produces a different vibe.
      Swiss Army Triplets are played RRL or LLR with the flam on the first note. In this video he is alternating sticking (RLR LRL) and simply putting a flam on the downbeat. Hope this helps!

    His left hand French grip is so ackward looking to me. But the technique is killer

    • @PCForrest
      @PCForrest 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Todd doesn't play French grip, he plays traditional grip (also known as conventional grip or orthodox grip) with underhand left (palm up) and overhand right (palm down). French grip, like German grip, is a matched grip. That is, both hands play overhand. With German grip, the sticks are held at 90 degrees to one another, palms down and thumbs on the side of the fulcrum. With French grip, the sticks are held parallel to one another, palms facing each other and thumbs on top of the fulcrum. German grip is generally more powerful than French grip, however French grip allows much more finesse with much greater finger control.
      The sole purpose of the traditional grip is purely to make it easier to play a side drum; a marching drum slung on your left and tilted forwards. If you were to try playing a side drum with a matched grip, your left elbow would be forced out and up to shoulder height, which quickly becomes uncomfortable. But with traditional grip, your left elbow stays low and close to the body where it belongs.

    • @sadiqmuhammad396
      @sadiqmuhammad396 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PCForrest yeah I'm a snare player and know what traditional grip is, I also play a lot of jazz drumming which also often uses some variation on traditional grip. However traditional grip right hand is typically not played with thumb on top of fulcrum which is why I compared it to French grip. However since it is held a 90°(really more like 50-60° for drum set) you are right it would be closer to a German grip/traditional hybrid
