    The dialogue about the dream of being a child breaks me every time. Tarkovsky truly crafted a masterpiece in feel and emotion with this one.

      Yes! I don't think I've ever made it through that scene without tears in my eyes. So heartbreaking and relatable.

    This must be the best video essay and critic reflecting on any tarkovsky's work! I'd love to see a series of videos not only for me, but to make tarkovsky's art more approachable to mainstream audience.

    Thank you for this fascinating talk about “Mirror” I have long been captivated by Tarkovsky’s films, and”Mirror “ benefits from insights like those you provide. I’ve found, over the years, that a very effective way to introduce people to this film is to suggest this they view it once solely as a sensory experience, let it sit in their mind for a day or so, then go back to it with an eye toward interpretation. I look forward to your other videos!!

      Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. Agree with you that it's best to just let the film wash over you and appreciate it's beauty before trying to interpret it.

    Such a deeply great video essay on one of my all time favorite movies. just to tell you how into the Mirror I was, when I worked at a movie theater I wore a name badge that had the Mirror as my favorite movie. I think the wind was caused by a helicopter, actually lol. Thank you for making this, and for being involved in the discussion of beauty. We all have beautiful worlds inside of us, and we need to do our best so that people can explore them and always remain who they are.

    Your choice of words to describe this film are on point. Your delivery is excellent and your observations are relatable. Bravo!!!!!!

    Thank you for turning me on to The Mirror, what an incredibly beautiful film! Unique, hypnotic, and dreamlike. I loved how it had me drifting into an altered state. Watching it felt like the cinematic equivalent to reading a poem.

      I totally agree. That's a great way to approach it: as a cinematic poem or the film equivalent of a symphony.

    This was a bit of a Tarkovsky blindspot for me for a while (I've seen Solaris, Stalker, Nostalghia, and the Sacrifice before now) so I'm very glad yr video encouraged me to finally watch it. It felt a lot like 'Inland Empire' as a film where my immediate comparison is to the experience of listening to music - where I can pick up on and think about themes in a much vaguer or more fluid way, outside of a sort of "narrative logic". And like 'Inland Empire', it does that without ever feeling like it's bending the medium of film totally out of shape. I mean, some of the shot compositions in 'Mirror' are absolutely insane, just breathtaking stuff.

    This is one of my top 5 movies ever its pretty high on the list been rewatching these since yesterday
    Amazing video btw according to tarkovsky not one scene in this movie is fictional he wanted to capture hus childhood memories and i think he did it in the best way possible because although I'm from a totally different time and place i still think this is a perfect portrayal of my own childhood as well

      Thank you! And I totally agree. Tarkovsky does an amazing job of presenting his own memories and experiences in a way that anyone can relate too, even if they grew up under dramatically different circumstances.

    Tarkovsky is a genius. Seems like his films are very spiritual and whatever they're about, they're really about life.

    Interesting! I'm going to try to watch the movie before your second part. On a purely aesthetic basis, the most beautifully presented movie I've seen is November, directed by Ranier Sarnet. It's a much simpler story, an Estonian fairytale. Not an incredible amount of depth, but the beauty of the cinematography and storytelling gives it scope beyond most films I've seen.

      I haven't seen November, but I'll have to check it out, because it seems like exactly the kind of movie I would dig.

    Never seen his films. I have heard of Solaris. Didn’t they do a remake with George Clooney? Gonna watch Mirror first.

    • @WilliamDuryea
      @WilliamDuryea  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They did! The remake was directed by Steven Soderbergh and had a pretty mixed reception. I watched it years ago, but don't remember it well. Tarkovsky's original is a masterpiece though.
