great lecture but my problem is why no official books were released by the government for lecture in primary/secondary schools? if martial law is so important that filipino people should learn from it, then government should have prioritized then the education of its younger generation like what germany did after the WW. 10, 20 or 50 years from now, martial law era will only be associated with special holidays and majority of the people cannot relate to this lecture. i think it's to late now. just thinking out loud.

    Just to add small notes
FM also believed in his idea of "constitutional authoritarianism" and published(?) a thesis based on this (have read about it on The Conjugal Dictatorship).
And for the fact that he even crafted a constitution that will best suit him before and after the declaration of Martial Law (1971) is proof enough that his top motive was to remain in power.

That's the real score why Marcos declare Martial Law, basically to hold on to power and stay as he wishes. He has that behind forsight of making the Philippines a kingdom. He was invisioning to be the king and Imelda as queen. This is manifested at Imelda's cravings for glittering tiaras and crowns of jewels.

Listen intently for one minute starting 6:38 and draw your conclusion if Martial Law was not declared by Marcos and the communist took over the Philippines -
"I believe na yung Leninist formula ng Lenin Party na laging nasusunod yung centralized party is a recipe for dictatorship.
In fact sinabi ng former leading communist himself na si Nathan Quimpo na sa tingin niya kung nanalo sila bilang communist party, the kind of regime that they would have created will be a totalitarian regime much worse than Marcos. Ito galing na mismo ito from a former communist himself.
So now it was a threat that if we did have a communist takeover the Philippines maraming papatayin kagaya ng mga pinatay ni Lenin at mga pinatay ni Stalin at mga pinatay ni Mao."

The lecture is almost convincing but falls short of the full perspective. I was in UP in 1970-76 and knew firsthand the scenario from a student's view. As a freelance writer-historian, I feel hindsight favors a wider understanding of that era. Threat can be either imminent or latent, if not prominent. As you yourself said, arms were already being shipped by foreign supporters through the NPA. 2,000 arm-bearing rebels represented the imminent threat while the prominent threat came from the foreign support (finances, arms and possible intervention by China) as well as from the indoctrinated politicians, professionals, students, peasants and workers in the capital region and major cities. It was just a matter of time when the takeover would be accomplished. It is like putting out a small fire before it spreads. And if the tiny fire starts among dry leaves, you need to act fast. That's intelligence.
Also, interpreting ML solely as a self-preserving political move is biased. If FM had passed on the government to the next president, the possibility of the reds winning was another imminent result. Arms and drastic means can be powerful tools for change, but an indoctrinated intellectual population alone can direct where those tools are applied. FM had the law behind his legitimate use of both, in spite of excesses by the military. But atrocities did occur on both sides. Perhaps, you could lecture on that and allow firsthand accounts by Victor Corpuz to reveal the real and accurate story instead of casting doubt on his credibility. Howie Severino's docu in TH-cam will help your research.

Remember that Mr. Marcos held a Constitution Convention in 1971. Before the actual Martial Law was declared.
He tried to craft a parliamentary government and many suspected that he's bucking for Prime Minister. But after Eduardo Quintero's expose, Napoleon Rama passed a resolution banning Marcos and his wife from holding office (overwhelmingly passed), and released a sworn statement of 14 people involved in the ConCon bribery.
This series of events tainted the Constitution Convention.
And like a spark of flame in a haystack, Mr. Marcos needed to act fast.

    • @manariwa

@@rheymarvinsalestre4075 And remember, we already had a parliament/presidential system with Virata as PM. Going into full parliamentary would have put us at par with other states now. Just as the nuclear plant would have made us power sufficient, and our own gold-based currency would have freed us from the dollar currency and IMF/WB, etc. But we'll never know, right? Power struggles always leave the people at the losing end. The reds and yellows are still there after 3 decades of so-so governance. People can now tell the big difference, so let them decide finally.

@@yellowlemon8765 Are you dumb? We had power outages because of the Mendiola Massacre and lone overpass? 🤣 To enlighten you, during the EDSA revolution, several AFP officers and personnel disobeyed orders from Marcos and sided with the Filipino people. Had EDSA failed, civil war was inevitable. The Presidency of Cory Aquino prevented that. During her admin, the constitution was revised securing that the President only has 6 years in office and no possible re-election. The Presidency of Marcos gave us the lesson that huge foreign loans for infrastructure projects without or minimal investment returns could put the economy declining just like in Sri Lanka. The Marcos Presidency gave us lessons on Political Dynasty and overstaying politicians are trapos. I did not expect Aquino to loan as much as Marcos did or to stay for 20 years as President just like Marcos did. Your Marcos Lord has political agenda of being trapo in governance. 😂🤣

Sorry but based on your study as historian you didn't mention that Marcos impose Martial Law not by only his decision... He had cabinet members and his not the master mind about it... I'm sorry for those who got caught because they are members of Communist but in that time Marcos knows something about Communist that CIA didn't know...
Marcos is an intelligent person and his an Army in his days.. based on how he handle Philippines in his time until now.. he still the best president... You can say he is dictator because he didn't want the people will become brainwashed by the communist who will ruin his great plan in this country. He had great vision for this country and you can say it's true but just what bongbong Marcos said.. the one that he didn't like about his father is President Marcos didn't like things who will not be a part for his vision to achieve his goal maybe you will misinterpret it if you have other plans which is bad. Marcos want to be a president for his next term because he want to make the Philippines to be great and communist will likely to infiltrate the government and will ruin his progress maybe that's his intentions.. so tell me if Marcos is good in his first term and you cannot say he is cruel then how can you say that in his 2nd term he only wants his position as president? He knows about Communist and he think if communist will take over his position the greatness of the Philippines will fall and that's how we are today, right?
For me, Marcos only want to save the Philippines not to torture it's people..
You cannot say CPP NPA is not a threat because they didn't have weapons, because they have the word and they will brainwashed the people and the people will likely to fight Marcos and that's why many got tortured. And CPP NPA is happy about it because it will ruin the image of marcos and they knew that if they can dirty the name of President Marcos they will gather more allies...

This info tungkol sa cabinet meeting isnt new, maraming speeches si FM about this right? Most notably sa Cspan if I'm not mistaken. Sabi nga ni enrile no one else can declare it but you (FM) with his sit down with BBM. BUT that doesnt completely withdraw Marcos from ultimately deciding the fate of the Philippines. One thing is absolute though, he is surely to be pointed fingers at since he is the literal commander in chief. Just like what BBM said sa Toni Talks kung hindi ka handa macriticize wag ka pumasok sa pulitika, RIGHTFULLY SO. Like the prof said the communist threat was real however this does not give you a free pass to illegally detain and torture people on mere speculation with that logic dapat pala kinidnap yung pamliyang marcos at inexecute silang lahat tulad ng romanov family for treason, no justice but swift action those two are basically the same so tell me whats right there? Regarding what you've said sa "Baguio thing" eh bakit di nila ginawa kung ganon naman pala?
