Watching this convinced me to buy Sims 4, as I love character creation and house design, and some of the options are fabulous. So I googled and discovered it is only on Origin. Ok, I can deal with that. It's only one extra program, not the end of the world. Then I opened the Origin store and... Holy mother of god. I thought wading through the options to buy a *real-life car* was bad. Thanks, but no thanks. If I need two separate fucking spreadsheets and a handy online walkthrough just to buy a game, I am not buying the game. They can fuck right off with that nonsense. On the bright side, Dan is still here to give me my character building and house designing fix. And I've saved some money. Not sure how much money - couldn't figure it out between the basic/premier/subscription/expansions/packs - but I've definitely saved something.
Honestly, you should just play the Sims 3. There's a ton more content for it, plus it's open world and has much more customization and life progression options. Plus it's on Steam so you can bypass Origin entirely.
Yeah, Origin is an absolute nightmare. I'd totally recommend buying the Sims 3 for Steam on sale with all the Expansion Packs for about $55. I did this over the course of 3 sales and it was worth it. I wouldn't go for the Stuff Packs because they're really overpriced for mainly decorative items with no use (I've heard the Movie Stuff is the best out of those).
Thanks for the suggestions! I don't pirate games - my views on piracy are a tad hypocritical when it comes to TV, but so far I've stuck to it on games. Sims 3 is definitely a good idea though :)
