It was designed by Guillem Sagrera (the architect of the cathedral's Portal del Mirador) as the city's exchange when Mallorca was a major maritime trading centre in the 15th century.
The great commercial activity carried out in the ports led King Jaime to give up the land to build the fish market, intended as a stock exchange and a meeting place for merchants to carry out their deals.
Fue diseñado por Guillem Sagrera (el arquitecto del Portal del Mirador de la catedral) como el intercambio de la ciudad cuando Mallorca era un importante centro de comercio marítimo en el siglo 15.
La gran actividad comercial llevada a cabo en los puertos llevó al rey Jaime a renunciar a las tierras para construir la lonja de pescado, pensada como bolsa de valores y lugar de encuentro para que los comerciantes llevaran a cabo sus negocios.
