  • You have to see this! Brock Davidson of Brock's Performance gives us a hands-on demonstration of the difference in performance between your motorcycle’s stock metal rims and the BST Carbon Wheels. You will want to go carbon fiber after you see this.

    I have about 55,000 miles on a set of BST CF wheels mounted on my BMW K1600GT. Absolutely no issues, Significant performance difference when compared to stock wheels. I tell fellow K1600 owners there are 2 things you can do increase the performance of the big K1600GT; e.g. BST wheels and Brembo Corta Corsa Master Cylinder.

    Should be compared with a modern alloy sportsbike wheel.

    The 1:7 static weight thing Brock was talking about when the video closed, has to do with equivalent weight effects. In other words, 1 pound of mass in a wheel has the equivalent bulk effect of 7 pounds of mass up in the motorcycle (all the stuff that isn't rotating or moving) by way of what it takes to accelerate it, stop it, move it. Reason for this is due to the wheel spinning at speed, the small amounts of wheel mass magnify effects on acceleration, braking, and handling due to gyroscopic and centrifugal forces. The motorcycle is only in linear motion, while the wheels are sending themselves on a much higher velocity journey (in rotation, or displacement in space/time) than the rest of the motorcycle. Obviously for a given speed like 60 mph, a larger diameter wheel is traveling much faster in the rim section than a smaller diameter wheel making the effects worse.
    Incidentally, the engine and transmission parts have similar effects when running at higher RPM.

    Great video.
    Based on the video, the lighter the wheel the less the gyroscope effect, which is obviously a huge advantage in cornering or changing direction.
    My concern is that on a big heavy Harley touring bike that gyroscope effect helps to stabilise the bike at high speeds.
    So having a very light wheel would reduce the gyroscope effect.
    Does that mean that the bike will be less stable at high speeds?

    • @Nick-dz4ml
      @Nick-dz4ml 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Somewhat, yes. It Will be easier to change direction so less stable

    Longevity/Durability of these wheels is a big question mark. Can you afford to have these fracture when doing highway or above speeds? The biggest question between myself and my other riding buddies is how long do these last before age causes them to rot or crack.. When you put these on a sport tourer capable of quarter mile times of 10-11 seconds stock, you can't afford to gamble. Metal rim longevity always wins that discussion.

    Carbon fiber rims are not as durable as any commercially available metal rim. There are videos of street riders whose carbon fiber rims failed midway through a corner simply due to the repeated flexing of the rims. Metals have a higher fatigue cycle failure rate (higher is better- more cycles vs lower). All materials eventually fail due to fatigue. Metal gives you a warning, carbon fiber fails catastrophically without warning.

    I don't think carbon fiber wheels should be street legal. They are very sensitive to any cracks, way more so than steel/alloy wheels, and can fail spectacularly. Look up bmw s1000 carbon wheel failure. If you need to have wheels ultrasounded for cracks, probably not the best for regular use...😮
