  • August is the bleakest time in the Drakensberg, with tinder dry grass and great swathes of burnt veld. We hiked up to the cave from Bushman's Nek in a near gale-force headwind, and only just managed to find one small pool of muddy water. At night, however, the stars and Milky Way were brilliant, and the aura of distant fires enhanced the nightscapes. Next day we explored the spectacular arches and formations in Sehlabathebe, including the unique Irish Cave with its amphitheatre-like open roof, before descending to our starting point.
