The reason why it walks back, this is an engineer hypothesizing here... you'll notice that the amount it walks back is roughly half of what you walked it forward in the first session. When the rope begins to ravel, you are essentially relieving some of the tension in the individual strands and transferring that potential energy into the full rope assembly...halfway along the length of rope. Its sort of like the concept of prestressed concrete, or tempered glass. Even though you're adding tension, when you add a load or heat in the case of glass, you are balancing out that tension, so the rope will relax in response to the opposing stress. Not sure if that made sense 😅 makes sense in my head. Relatively new to the hobby, just getting to the rigging on my first sailing ship (OcCre's Endeavour)... went ahead and bought some of your scale rope, because thread is just....meh :) very excited to get it!
I have just watch the two videos of Chucks'; I am currently waiting this kit making my own rope , to arrive as I just ordered it. And I am anxious of getting started making my own rope. Previously I have ordered Chucks' rope online - but now having both of the best worlds available, what can go wrong!
