- We compare three Nepal treks, the Annapurna Circuit, Everest Base camp and Three Passes trek. We have completed all three, but when we first went to Nepal we really debated which trek to choose. In this video we compare the pros and cons of these popular treks based on our experience and provide some tips and recommendations.

I planning to go ABC trekking and langtang national park ! Can you tell .. which month is perfect for trekking?
Adith Adi we have heard October and November are best. Also, April and May can be good. We personally preferred the month of November because the weather was still great but it seemed less crowded. Have fun!

Was set on doing Annapurna circuit (incl Tilicho Lake and Poon Hill) this Oct/Nov, but read about all the trucks and construction, so decided to research some more and came across your video. Youve pretty much convinced me that 3 Passes Trek is what Id want to do. I love photography, and love mountainous scenery.
I am experienced, so Im ready for the challenge. Just hope the weather cooperates.

I had done Annapurna trek in june and it was best trek that i have ever been to try once it will be lifetime experience with incredible people organic Food and breath taking view💞💞💞💞

Hello :) i was wondering if the 3 passes is well marked? is a GPS of paper maps + compass necessary?
Hi Mies, it’s well marked in parts, especially the ebc portions, but other parts it can get tricky. I think it’s very important if you do the 3 passes independently to bring a gps with the tracks, a map and compass is always a good backup but hopefully not required. but we personally like physical maps to see where we are going to plan on the way and use the gps tracks to make sure we are going the right direction.
Here is a recent idea about a less crowded trek in the Everest area combing culture and awesome views, using mostly trails which are quite empty: Cultural Gokyo trek, which goes like this: Standard entrance to Namche (2 nights). Next Tengpoche monastery (night), shortcut trail with a new bridge to Phortse and continue to Thore or Thare (night) on the east side of the Gokyo Valley, practically no trekkers on that trail. Next to Nha (night) to acclimate, no trekkers, one lodge. There are snow leopards on the upper pastures, make an evening hike up there.
Next comes Gokyo where one can stay any number of nights depending how much exploring is done: Gokyo Ri, upper lakes etc. Exit is via Renjo La pass, which is the easiest of the 3 passes, to Lungden (night). Next south to Thame along the quite empty valley leading to Tibet towards the north. All the (summer) villages along the route are quite pristine and unaffected by modern times. Thame (night) is also a real living village and has the historically and culturally most important and oldest monastery in the region. Next day hike to Namche and continue back to Kathmandu from there.
This route includes 2 monasteries and passes by about 4 more (between Thame and Namche), includes real unspoiled villages of Phortse and Thame + several smaller ones (Nha, several khakas) and offer the splendid Gokyo views of Everest with much much less crowds than the EBC trail. The normal up-and-down Gokyo route has no real villages, artificial lodge clusters only and no culture at all. This takes only couple of days more but offers a vastly better and more varied experience. People should use their imagination, and maps, to plan their treks, not just copy what everybody else is doing.
I’d love to go back to Nepal but now they’re requiring guides on all treks , so I’m not sure when we’ll be back
Great tips guys, will definitely keep this video in mind as we are interested in trekking EBC but wow we didn't realize how crowded the trek is!
Cherry and Trevor aww thank you! It can be crowded but as we mention in the video if you do ebc try to make it a loop back by going over to Gokyo. That had the most spectacular scenery in our opinion :)

About the EBC (only) trek: people seem to miss the possibility to go up using a more interesting trail from Namche to Pangpoche via Phortse instead of Tengboche. Better views, not crowds, lots of wildlife. Everybody goes via Tengpoche twice. Why? Tengpoce can be visited on the way down.

October is always the best time for hiking. I would prefer hiking in crowds because hiking often gets involves with a certain degree of dangers. You can seek help from crowds easily. So it won’t happen to you like the news about the disappearance of lone hikers.

Can anyone compare the phisical challange trek of eg 3 passes to Inka Trail in Peru or Salkantay Trek?
We haven’t done the Inka trail, but I can tell you that the big challenge with the 3 passes trek will be the altitude. I invite those treks in Peru are high, but on the 3 passes, you spend most of your time over 14000 feet, it’s pretty tough. Happy trails!
Hi guys, super informative video, can anyone summaryze reasonably how much affordable is ABc comparing to EBC/3Passes? Half of the budget?
That’s a good question. I can tell you now that the Annapurna Circuit was cheaper for us, but now that they are requiring guides all all treks in Nepal, they’re both going to be way too expensive. So frustrating that they’ve decided to do that.
Don't forget Langtang! I did that and Annapurna and they were both incredible. Langtang was very special and very not crowded, huge bonus.

Hi all the trek I’ve seen that includes gokyo lake says it takes 17 days what do you mean it takes only 1 more day
I think we are making that it only adds one more day to the EBC trek, but now that I’m looking at it, it might add 2 days. Either way, it’s a great addition to an EBC trek.
What about manaslu circuit trek?
Good question. We’ve never done the Manaslu circuit, but it looks very beautiful.
Annapurna trek is the best:lower price,more diversity of villages and people,more bridges to cross,
and not to much dust (if you take trail way)and different side of wiew for Annapurnas,dhaulagiri,nilgiri
in fact,a little bit more authentic compare to business of EBC,but of course EVEREST is highter!

Oh no! What are you confused about? One of the challenges is they are all good treks haha. Three passes trek for best mountain scenery and a good physical challenge. Annapurna for cheaper cost and better cultural experiences. Is there a trek you are leaning towards?
Haha. I watched all your videos and love them all, well done. Well I live a pretty busy life and don’t see multiple trips to Nepal in the works. All the trees that attract me seem to be super long and have their own unique appeal. I’ve been to Ecuador and don’t do well over 4500 M without a struggle. Kinda like your 3 passes videos. Essentially I’d like to get to Nepal and do both Annapurna and the everst region. Annapurna attracts me more so, however how can I miss the Tokyo lakes? Those views were stunning. But I don’t want 2 weeks of altitude sickness. EBC did not seem to be my speed.
@@davidmarcoccia3449 Wow Thank you! The treks in Nepal do tend to take quite a bit of time, but are amazing. We met people on the Annapurna Circuit who were just hiking to Poon Hill (3209) which has a beautiful view point of so many mountains (albeit a bit crowded). If you are short on time that could be an option though. I've also heard of some small treks closer to Kathmandu, but we have never done them so could not say whether they are good or not. I'm not sure how much time you will have but flying out to the Everest area and trekking to the Gokyo lakes will take likely two weeks or more. Would love to know what you decide whenever we get a chance to travel again! :)
