In one of the greatest games of the 1998-99 season, the eighth-ranked St. John's (NYC) Red Storm, led by Ron Artest (now Metta World Peace) and Bootsy Thornton push Elton Brand, Trajan Langdon, Shane Battier and the second-ranked Duke Blue Devils to the limit in a classic battle at the Big Apple.
Game played on Sunday, January 24, 1999 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

As a die hard at John's fan, I have to say that bootsy Thornton is one of my top three johnnies of all time, he at times was amazing
i was at this game. about 15 rows off the floor behind the basket where artest hit the 3 to tie. great atmosphere and a tough loss for the johnnies. duke practically had a nba team on the floor.
One of my favorite games of all time. We don't get good games like this anymore cause everybody wants to go pro. Great job Mike Jarvis. Lavar Postell putting in work.
I used to love watching Erick Barkley handling the rock for the Johnnies back in the day!
Hands down, one of the best big time college basketball games on a Sunday at, the notorious MSG!!! I really miss this era of college basketball, especially with the Big East. I was in high school when this happened, great memories
This was a great game by both teams. Later in the '99 season, St. John's made a run all the way to the Elite 8 and Duke went all the way to the Final Four and to the National Championship game (lost to Connecticut). I enjoyed watching this game and thanks for uploading this classic. 🏀
I was a big time Erik Barkley fan, he could really run a team well!
This game was nuts. Watched it when I was a sophomore in high school.
I remember watching this game on Sunday
Love the old CBS Intro
I loved that St. John's Backcourt of Barkley and Thornton!
I remember watching this live, Bootsy thornton WAS NUTS!!!
great lefty jump shooter!
@@jasonlandy3491 ABSOLUTELY !!!
St. John's nearly joined Duke in the '99 Final Four. Ohio State getting to the FF honestly surprised me more than anything else in the first 2 weeks of that tourney.
Artest and Brand probably played 500 hours of basketball together and against each other in their final years of high school. They knew each other well.
Best St. John's team in last 25 years was that 99 team. Had a great chance to go all the way but lost to Ohio State team they were better than
Probably best Duke team ever as well (or at least as good as 92 Duke Team) but lost to a UCONN team in National Title game they were better than.
+JZ2001JC This Duke team was the best to never win it all. Cried myself to sleep as a kid when we lost
was that the team with scoonie penn and michael redd?
@@supremedog1000 yes, I remember St. John's blew a big time chance to go to the Final Four!
The Steve Francis team kill them
Does anyone have the full SJU-Duke game the year after this in Durham?? St.Johns won that game.
It's almost like that game never happened. No footage to be found anywhere on TH-cam and the game is over 20 years old. You would think SOMEONE would have went ahead and uploaded the game or highlights of the game by now lol
@@Riles3152 We were on a tear. We beat Syracuse at MSG, then Duke, then UCOnn. 99-2000 was a good team. Just imagine if Artest had stayed, that team would have been unstoppable. We just couldnt handle Gonzaga's size in the tournament.

@@classic2kvideos Awesome!! thanks.
What about the Halftime Report with Bonnie Bernstein?
Great game!
I Remember This in My Sophomore Year High School
bootsy....we want bootsy!
Great game
Though this was one of their rare close games, it's fascinating to see what the vaunted '99 Duke team was like. (To put things in perspective, This was the only game in a 10-game stretch they did not win by double digits.)
They were THAT good. You don't win 32 straight by default.
UConn beat this St John's team 3 times. Twice on their home court.
The following year St. John's beat UConn 3 times, those were great rivalries.
@@iTzJSwag and that was almost a Final Four matchup. If not for Ohio State, we'd have gotten UConn/St. John's IV
That good because of experience several super sophomores, a senior captain, star freshman people don't know how stacked that team was just loaded
Does anybody has UConn vs St john's from 1999?
People want to talk about hairlines holy shit !!
lololololol
The whole fucking Duke starting five fouled out great St John's team
Almost 16 years later and the officiating still looks pathetic. Maybe the refs thought their children would get scholarships to Duke. Richardsons 5th foul was a joke.
Brands 5th foul was a travesty. And on the game tying 3 by Artest at the end of regulation, Barkley double dribbles before handing it off and no call!
2 of Duke starters fouled out, and you still blame the refs 😂😂😂😂
16++++++ years and you still blame the refs...... classic lol

Hehehehehe...duke guards were trash this era
