Really excited for Union Pacific Challenger 3985’s restoration to be complete at the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America in Silvis Illinois in a few years.
@@DylanRailVids04 Well to sum it up: Boody, Virginia had one of the tight curves on the old Clinchfield Railroad and of course... while most of the Clinchfield Challengers were able to handle that tight curve, not so in the case of Union Pacific's Heavy Challengers (aka the group of Challengers that the 3985 belongs to.). Anyways... a coal train was of course waiting at Boody for the Challenger to clear, but what the UP Steam Crew didn't realize was that the running board on 3985 was a bit long and of course in the process... 3985 ended up hitting her running board on the coal hopper, mainly on the Fireman's side. Of course... it wouldn't take until well after sunset by the time they got to Kingsport, Tennessee to get of course that running board repaired to which they were able to fix it by the next day.
Bob Loehne is my grandfather, so wonderful to see these old vhs tapes tossed around digitally. A time to reminisce something I was never able to see.

Indeed =)
Great video. I liked it and I have enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing!!
Awesome video
This trip was a nightmare for both CSX and Union Pacific. A lot of things that could go wrong went wrong and they never wanted to do this again.
And which is why aside from this 1992 trip, we never seen UP steam venture east beyond their territory, right?
@@jimmyhook4852 Well that and the logistics in doing it
@@jimmyhook4852then again UP 844 did a excursion trip to Tennessee a few years back
@@BuckeyeNationRailroader Yeah.
@@DylanRailVids04 True, but 844 didn't come close to getting onto CSX rails unlike what 3985 did in '92.
& Now The New Era Steam Program!
Daniel again, shut up already.
UP #3985 disguised as Clinchfield challenger #676 traveling down the line. I honestly thought it looked great.
November 1992.
(1980)! CSX Railroad Gets Formed!
Daniel please shut up already. :/
I wonder if anyone was at least able to get video of 3985 (in her 676 guise) striking that coal hopper with her running board in Boody, Virginia.
I never knew that actually happened!

@@jimmyhook4852 oh wow! I’m surprised it’s not really talked about alot more often than how it should have been
@@DylanRailVids04 Yeah, it was one of the many issues that the UP Steam Crew had when running 3985 out east like that back in 1992.
Theres a pentrex video, that shows the bent running board. But not as it happened.
Chinch field 676 knows as Union Pacific 3985
