Terry, happy belated birthday. We met at the premier of "Time Bandits" in Hollywood. Shelly Duvall looked uncomfortable and clutched onto my wife, leaving me standing alone. You walked up to me and we had a lengthy conversation. I was a mental health therapist at Tideland Mental Health Center in Washington, North Carolina and thought "Fisher King" was genius. Then came "Tideland". For me, it was disturbing at best. Later I was in a therapy session with a young girl when she brought up "Tideland". She said it was her favorite movie ever, because it mad her feel "real". Her upbringing was similar to the story line of "Tideland". It changed the way I interacted with my patients forever. Thank you Mr. Gilliam for all you've done and continue to do. You are a world treasure.
I had an opportunity to interact with Terry in Philadelphia when he was filming 'Twelve Monkeys'. I had two questions for him: 1) Is 'Time Bandits' a children's film? TG: Of course. 2) In 'Time Bandits,' 'The Adventures of Baron Von Munchausen,' and 'The Fisher King,' there are large men on majestic white horses. I am seeing you because of an encounter with a horse. Is there a reason? TG: "I like horses."

Like all of us, I can and regularly do listen to them quite literally for hours, now via youtube, whether in individual interview or, more hilariously, as Team Python. Terry G (the bloody American, like me) makes the grade by virtue of his irrepressible sense of humor and his wonderfully tittering laughter. Whether still with us or having happily passed on, cheers to All the Pythons and all of their Fans!

I just read his memoir "Gilliamesque". It was brilliant! I wish it was twice as long, hell, three times as long! As a filmmaker myself, all the behind-the-scenes stories from Gilliam's sets are pure gold. No filmmaker has ever fought harder or longer to realize his vision, year after year, decade after decade. The cojones on this man are tremendous! Happy birthday, maestro! I hope you get to make many more inimitable films!

I simply adore him, I study filmmaking and he is such an inspiration for me. I totally agree with the abandonment of ego being integral to making films. They just get in the way, it's about working with other people and not against them. Surrendering yourself to making the best project we collectively can. And unlearning the serious anti-play rhetoric that is drilled into us as we become "adults" is a lesson for film but more importantly a lesson for life. Beautiful human.
Aw....Jonathan Pryce's wishes. I'm not interested in "fame" "celebrity" or any of that bollocks. People who work to tell stories that mean things, they're people I admire. When a story pierces your heart and feels real despite the obvious fact it's imagined, then you know you're in good company with people you'll never meet, but will know on an unseen and profound level of intimacy. You and Tim Burton and many others giving Zeman his due, it was great, and very good to see where some of your inspiration comes from. I say some because as you quipped in this interview, your omnivorous appetites show in your work, yes, the shit does come out as does the genius. Thank you for so much fun, laughing, dark, dirty, provocative film making - it has enhanced my life!
Thanks so much for this as it's been most interesting to watch. I never realized until I watched this, just how many of my favorite films were created or influenced by Terry Gilliam. Happy 80th Birthday to someone whose imagination, wit and talent has inspired some truly wonderful story telling. I appreciate you and all that you've shared with the world. :) Whether it was "Time Bandits" showing up when life was dark, or "the Adventures of Baron Munchausen" showing up when I needed to escape the woes of my life, Terry's storytelling was there to take me away to a magical place when I least expected it...and most needed it.

I recently read a modern-classic: “Slaughterhouse-Five”, Kurt Vonnegut’s. And I know they made a movie about it, but I enjoyed so much that reading I wouldn’t dare to watch any movie based on that book if it is not directed by Terry Gilliam 💛
Might I also commend to you "Mother Night" by Vonnegut and the IMO excellent film adaptation. Not Gilliamesque at all, but IMO Vonnegutesque. IMO does the book excellent justice.
I really wish that one of these days BFI will release all of that humongous collection of silent films on the Internet for the world to see, I want to see them all! It's a shame they're not shared a lot more.

Definitely THE Yankee in The Court of King Arthur (sorry Danny Kaye) you know when I saw Brazil I really thought that was the career definer but then I saw 12 Monkeys and it is that rare item where the script and the production and the cast work a stellar piece of science fiction in the stellar fashion it warrants. It's a perfect film, credit to Terry Gilliam for spotting its potential and pulling it off. In the online media for a while now stories have been appearing about an anti-gravity drive which utilizes some form of electromagnetic radiation and may operate at some known (but secret) frequency (g/m/k hertz) and furthermore the occupants are synthesized avatars travelling through space TIME which would be a way around not being able to appear in the same time as yourself. So you never know! James, or his avatar, may really be trying to reach out to us! The other idea of note was crop circles were calendrical motifs denoting year, date and so on. You never know! The Avatars might be in insurance!
When I heard that his film was finally going to be released "Don Quixote" after years of setbacks, and then the pandemic show up almost right on the day, I figured it would be almost reasonable, given the funny quirks and how nature seems to conspire against his films in an almost personal fashion, to hold Gilliam accountable for this plague... that's just me of course. Having seen all his film as they came out I was surprised at how much I loved Don Quixote. I was not expecting it to be his most emotionally affecting film. But I love all of them. PS Despite the little BFI presentation they are not druggie films!

Interesting conversation. I saw «lost in La Mancha» and the final film. It took many years and J.Depp and J.Rochefort were not there anymore. Maybe it was not the film he wanted to make (I would have loved to see the giants :-) but I thought the essence of the original film was in the final one. Hats off to Gilliam’s perseverance. (Looking forward to see the role Terry is having in the latest Albert Dupontel’s film).

I can tell when Spielberg directed a movie or television episode by the way it looks. He has a certain visual style. Same thing for a Terry Gilliam film. Perhaps that is what is meant by Gilliamesque?

As much as I love Terry, I gotta say he took a turn after Fear & Loathing. All his movies before that had dark elements, yet could be defended with the word 'But...' - there's hope at the end, an escape, some form of affirmation. After Fear & Loathing though I could no longer use the word 'But...' for his films. They're just DARK! They're an experience still, yes. But an experience I care to revisit anytime soon...? But to keep Terry's spirits up - I've never seen one Woody Allen 'European' film yet. No interest to whatsoever. Though I love all his American epics. So you always suck me in Terry!
I just wish Terry could have directed the Harry Potter films! They were OK films but a bit pedestrian. I'm sure Terry would have brought much more to them!
The last time I saw Eric on film he looked like he'd aged quite a bit. Of course there was also no Bruce Willis. Maybe they saw the invitation and thought it was a joke.

Terry Gilliam was the only filmmaker to push robin Williams so hard during the Fisher king that Williams became very angry.
There was a scene in the movie where Williams had to run really fast and Gilliam forced robin to do over again. Williams blew up.

George Roy Hill was a fantastic director who made a great adaptation. Guillermo del Toro wants to remake it, and I hope to god that doesn't happen

Gilliam's animation was making me laugh before PYTHON broke into the US, on THE MARTY FELDMAN COMEDY MACHINE(on ABC in 1972).
