  • Pentax introduced the entry-level ME model in the late 1970s -- a period of heated competition among camera producers. The entry-level model allowed users to control the aperture only, providing very limited shutter control through the compensation dial.
    Competing heavily with Olympus to make the smallest and lightest 35mm SLR body, Pentax's ME is actually smaller than the Olympus OM-2. This combined with the simple function made the ME a logical camera to bridge the gap from point-and-shoot models to SLRs for entry-level users.

    David REALLY knows his stuff. I had recently purchased a Pentax ME Super at a yard sale ($30,00, w/ a standard lens) and when I got the first roll back from processing, nothing but a blank whitish negative strip. I discovered his videos here after a google search and emailed him with what happened with my "new" ME. To be honest, I wasn't expecting a reply. The next day, not only did he email me back, bout he did so w/ a very detailed list of suggestions of things I could try. Which I did. And after loading another roll and shooting, and another round of processing {waiting expectantly 😶 }, I went to the camera shop and hurray! Negatives! 😃 Which then became prints! 👍 Way to go, David! 👏

    Hi David, I love my Pentax ME, had it since it was new, enjoyed your instructions as I have forgotten much but thought Id resurrect mine. Was asking about taking deliberate double exposures. Thanks very much for all you are doing.Paul

      Thank you, Paul!
      I forget if I addressed double exposures in this video. If not, you just need to hold the film rewind lever and the film release button on the bottom as you advance the film. Then after you advance your film when you've taken the final image you'll need to cover the lens with the cap and take a dead frame to prevent the frame that follows the double exposure from overlapping.

    Once again thanks for the great info.......I just got an ME Super that was missing its rewind nob....but replaced it with one from a parts Minolta XG-7. Great little camera, with a super bright viewfinder! Of all the cameras that I have, this is my first operational Pentax. But I've also got a Spotmatic body that's will soon have a lens. Cheers!

      Loading film, if your fingers are as un-dexterous as mine, will help with neither anxiety nor depression. :D
      Actually, I think you're on to something. There's a very calming aspect to the technical, detailed work behind film photography. Printing your work in a dark room could also be really helpful in that regard. Even getting out and walking around in the sun (my favorite part of taking photos is the hiking) will be great.

    I just got my Pentax ME in today! Super excited to shoot with it, I have a roll of Ektar 100 saved for this occasion.
    Been shooting with point and shoot film cameras for over a year and just about 7 or 8 months ago I picked up a Canon EOS Rebel Gii and it was a great first SLR. Now that I have this Pentax, my canon feels like a toy haha.

    So I just found one of these at a thrift store including a flash and the automatic winder. It’s my first ever film camera and my best friend had the same one so I have a bit of a guide. The down side is it looks like the flash is a waste as the door for the batteries won’t even open it’s so full of acid, not sure if that’s salvageable, but it also came with a sort of rubber ring around the lens. I’m assuming the ring is used to help with exposure? Also if you have a video you can recommend for how to use the winder that would be awesome! Your videos were super helpful explaining what is going on with this camera so thank you!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice find! The flash is toast, not at all recoverable. Any flash with manual controls will work, like an old Vivitar or a brand new Amazon Basics. The rubber ring was probably a collapsible lens hood and, in general, I just pitch those because rigid hoods offer better protection when the lens bangs into things like a door or tree. For the winder, there were a few different models. I don't think that I have a video for any of them.

    very helpful! wondering, how to do double exposure with a pentax me super?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm glad I could help.
      Double exposures are a bit fidly.
      1- Tighten the film with the film rewind.
      2- Adjust the exposure compensation (one stop for a double exposure, two for a triple exposure.)
      3- Take the first frame.
      4- Hold the film rewind knob, press and hold the film rewind button on the bottom, and advance the film.
      5- Repeat as needed for how many exposures you're placing on the same frame.
      6- After you finish your multiple-exposure shot, put the lens cap on and take a dead frame because the registration will be off and there may be frame overlap on the image edge if you don't take a dead frame.

    Hi David! I'm loving the way you're explaining everything so well! Already learned a lot! Maybe a silly question but is there a way for me to check whether the camera needs new batteries? I bought mine yesterday from someone who hasn't used it in many many (many) years. But I can hear the shutter etc. Thanks in advance!!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! For the batteries, they should last about a year. The way to tell if they're dead is if the LEDs in the viewfinder don't light up and if the shutter doesn't fire at different speeds in auto mode.

  • @maryball1041
    @maryball1041 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi David, your videos are great. I just have a question about my Pentax Me camera, I loaded the film in and noticed that when I take pictures the arrow rewind lever is not going counterclockwise when I take photos. I wasn't sure if I loaded the flim incorrectly? It seems to be working when I take photos but the arrow is not going counterclockwise like in your video. Will this effect my flim? Thanks

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Mary. Give the film a quick tension with the rewind knob. It could be that the film is slightly loose inside the cassette. That would cause what you're describing. The other possibility is that the film was not taken up on the film advance properly. So if you want to rule that out, in a dark room with no lights (like an interior bathroom) and a towel at the door base, open the back of the camera and see if the film is wrapped around the take-up spool or if the leader is flopping around in the back of the camera. If the former, just close the camera back and finish your film, even though the frame counter will not be accurate.) If the leader is flopping around, you can turn on the lights and re-load the film. By leader, I mean the tongue of film that sticks out of the cassette, the part that you'd pull on to load the film.

    Hi! Thank you for the video! in my case my Pentax ME lightmeter is broken so battery won't do anything. any tips to still use the camera correctly? I can still use it right? thank you for answering

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm. Good question. That depends on whether the problem is that the camera's electronics are dead or if only the viewfinder LEDs are dead. If the electronics are dead, then there's no using the camera except in the one mechanical shutter speed of 1/100th. If the LEDs are dead, then you can still use the camera only you'll never know until it's too late if the exposure is too slow to hand-hold.
      So here's how you'd test that: With new batteries or batteries you know work correctly installed, set the ISO to 400 and the aperture to the smallest number. Point the camera at a lamp or something like that. Take a photo. Repeat at f/16. If the second shutter time is noticeably slower, then you know the issues is only the LEDs and not the electronics. As a secondary verification, you can try a third shot at f/16 pointed at a wall. That WILL be a lot slower if the camera is working properly.

    great help! I have a question. I bought the 2 batteries and placed it just like you did but I don't get any red light on the lens view...what could it be?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm. Could be a few things. First, make sure that you've advanced the film and armed the shutter. Try using it outside with no film in it just to see if it works. Also try it with the film advance popped out a little (about 1/2 inch, bit less, just flick it out a bit from the camera, but not enough to start advancing the film) and see if that helps.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. For exposure compensation, that won't help you in low light. You'll need to take a meter reading and use a long exposure for that. Using exposure compensation in low light would, in all probability, give you images that are very underexposed.

      @ceejay7034 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidHancock Ok! Duly noted! Thank you so much!
      The reason I ask is because on my Pentax ME, ever since I've had it, the light meter in the view finder has been broken, which I will definitely get fixed at some point.
      In the meantime is it best to just get myself a manual light meter?
      What do you think would be more cost effective?
      Sorry for all the questions, but thanks again for answering my previous one. I really appreciate it!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the ME, a separate meter won't do much since this camera's fully auto (except the single manual shutter speed.) If the issue is just the LEDs, then it's still worth fixing but you can shoot with it in the interim.

    Hi David, Thank you so much for this video! I'm new to film photography (or photography in general) and I got a little lost when you said change the F. I don't see how to change the F on this camera. Could you help me with that? Thank you! :)

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Marie. Thank you and sure thing. The f is the aperture stop. So if you have the kit 50mm f/2 lens. The numbers from 2 to 22 along the ring on the lens next to the camera's body are the f stops. So to change them, going to f/5.6 to f/8 would be changing the f one stop. So that's the f ring and how to change it. Does that make sense?

    Hello David and others film lovers! I got a Pentax ME and I'm super excited to try it. I've been playing around with it in order to understand it better and I'm in trouble. The thing you drag in order to move the film for a new pic is now loose, I tried to tighten it up rotating that thing where the asa is and still the nothing has changed and besides that if I take a look through the view finder there is everything black except that circle in the middle and I don't know what to do. And yes I took off the lens cap. Do you have any ideea why is that so?

    Looking for your reply

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Ioana,
      That sounds like a broken camera. If you remove the lens, can you see a mirror in the camera or is the mirror stuck upwards? If the latter, then there's a problem with the shutter mechanism.
      The loose film advance sounds like someone stripped the gears over-winding film at some point. These cameras are prone to that. In any case, your camera will need a professional repair.

    Hi David! Big fan of your tutorials here 😊 I was gifted a pentax me by a friend, but she has no idea if the camera works. I decided to give it a shot. I changed the batteries and loaded a roll of film hoping to test out the camera. I watched your video to see if there was anything specific i needed to know and i’ve noticed that the red light indicating the shutter speed isn’t showing up for me. Any idea on what could be the issue and does it mean the camera doesn’t work?
    Also, is there any way to test if the batteries work? I also shoot with a Nikon FE and i appreciate the little switch that indicates if the batteries are functioning or not. Is there something similar on the Pentax ME?
    Thanks for your advice!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you!
      For the LEDs and shutter speed, we'll test those the same way. I'd start by rewinding the film until you have a leader unless you're okay with wasting a couple of frames. With the camera shutter set to the automatic mode, set the lens' aperture to the smallest number, point the camera at a lamp, and take a photo. Then repeat the process with the lens at the largest number. If the shutter speeds are vastly different, then the camera works and the LEDs may have died. If the shutter speed is the same then there's an issue with the electronics. I forget, with this camera, if the shutter will fire or lock when the batteries die (I think they fire) so if the shutter speeds are the same also make sure that the batteries are both good and loaded correctly and that the battery chamber is clean, both the chamber, the cap, and the threads on both.

    hi, my film rewind lever and the upper layer of the dial it is attached too are both loose. when i lift the lever, nothing happens. is there a way to fix this or is the camera now useless

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is, yes. The rewind knob that you lift can be tightened by turning it the direction that you would turn it to rewind the film. Then once you have it tightened up a bit you should be able to open the film back more easily. So to tighten the knob, look at the arrow on the film rewind lever and turn the knob that direction.
      If this is a new camera to you, make sure that you lift the knob far enough to release the film back. When you lift it up far enough there should be an increase in resistance followed by a release and the film back should pop open.
      With the film back open, you can further tighten the rewind knob by putting something (like a quarter or a key) in the forks of the film rewind post (the metal bit that extends into the camera and grips the film cassette) and holding it as you tighten the knob more.
      For the upper layer of the dial, that should just screw back on. I think it's a standard fitting (righty tighty) but sometimes camera components are reverse threaded (lefty tighty).

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure! Monday morning at 8:30 AM Pacific I have a video going live that shows how to fix that on this model camera. :D
      Basically, the process is to get a Dremel or drill and put two holes in the battery cap, near the edges, but not on the edge. Then use a spanner wrench with point tips (about $10-25 on eBay, depending on quality) to remove the stuck cap. If the battery exploded, then clean the cap and compartment and see if the camera works (corrosion can follow electrical cables and ruin boards.) If it does work, just re-use the battery cap unless the uncrewing indent in ruined. Replacement battery caps for these run about $15 on eBay, so if it was cross-threaded or if the uncrewing indent was chewed up, then buying a new cap is a good idea.

    Hello! I have this camera and my last 3 rolls have come back completely blank. I know this is super vague but do you have any idea why this could be?
    Thanks David!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm. There are a few possibilities. Do they have markings on the edges, text and other numbers? If yes, then the issue is in the camera. If not, then the issue is in the developing.
      Let's assume there are edge markings. With the lens set to the maximum aperture (f/2 if you have the 50mm f/2 lens) and no film in the camera, open the film pack and point the camera at a ceiling light. Trigger the shutter. You should be able to see light through the lens. If so, then mechanically the camera is fine and the issue is likely camera settings.
      Assuming the latter, the camera will take a photo regardless of settings. So if you have it set to 1/100th and ff/22 indoors, as an example, you will get nothing at all. There isn't enough light for the film to develop an image. If you're set to auto mode then the camera should take a properly timed photo, but if the required exposure is longer than the maximum shutter speed, then images will be dark or blank.
      Another possibility is that the camera is not taking up the film. When you load the film, make sure that the rewind knob is turning when you advance the film. If it does not, then the film is not being drawn through the camera.
      Let me know if those ideas help and if they solve the problem. If not, we'll take it from there.

      +Esther Teo The shutter on these will fire at one speed, I forget which, without batteries. So mechanically it will work but most of your photos will not turn out if you aren't using batteries. The batteries control the light meter and also the all except the one mechanical shutter speed. So in order to have your photos turn out, you'll need to have batteries.

    Do you know if the scale in the view finder needs batteries , i have the same camera, but the scale doesn't work, and I've tried using LR-44 batteries, and does the camera need batteries to work on its own?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it does. The camera needs batteries for the shutter speeds (other than 125X) to work and the lights to light up. To test your camera, point it at the wall and take a photo. Then hold your hand right in front of the lens and do it again. The second shutter fire should be much slower than the first. (Set your aperture to f/5.6 or f/8 to get a better sense of shutter timing.)
      If the shutter speeds are accurate, your LEDs are dead. If the shutter speeds are the same, your camera likely has electronics issues or the batteries are dead or inserted backwards.

      The viewfinder itself is black? Take the lens off the front and see if the mirror is locked up. If it is, try actuating the shutter and advancing the film. Let me know what the situation with the mirror is and if the film lever can advance. We'll take it from there, if needed.

    do u adjust the asa only to match the speed of film your using.....Or do you change it depending on the environment

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Courtney Aiello Set the ASA to the film speed you're using and don't change it until you use a new roll. The film will all be developed in the same way, so if it's developed at 400 ISO and you shoot half the roll at 400 ISO and half at 100 ISO, half the roll will be way over-exposed (the 100 ISO half). So once the roll is in, the ISO should be fixed. If you want to, you can do what's called pushing and pulling where you use a roll of 400 ISO film (for example) as 800 ISO (push) or 200 ISO (pull) and adjust the development time. But even then, once the roll is in, you can't change the speed setting partway through.

Have you any idea what the problem or how to fix it?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For that there are a couple of things I can suggest.
      1- Make sure that the white lock button on the dial is pressed in. If it isn't, then pressing it should let the dial move. If it is depressed and the dial won't move, then step 2:
      2- Grab some cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol, preferably 91%. Wet the swabs in the alcohol and run them along the dial's perimeter, over and over. If there is grease of something that has caused the dial to stick (a pretty common issue, honestly, with these) then the alcohol should help it get loose enough to allow the dial to move again.

      Also, when do I know if the film reachs the end? Does it make a certain type of sound? Also, why doesn't my frame count for my camera move when I shoot?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it will. All you need to do is set the film speed (don't change it until you change rolls because your film will not have consistent exposures if you do) and then the camera will pick the best shutter speed based on the aperture that you select.
      The ME is generally not recommended for photo classes because it lacks a full manual mode. That said, it allows aperture-priority shooting. Check with your teacher or syllabus to see if full manual mode is required.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the frame counter isn't moving that sounds like a mechanical issue. The frame counter should advance whenever the shutter advance lever is moved. It's not the end of the world if it doesn't. Some of my cameras have non-functional frame counters.
      You'll know you reach the end of the roll when you can't advance any further. When that happens, don't force the film advance, simply rewind the film the whole way (the film will make a sound when it finishes rewinding because the film will come off the take-up spool inside the camera) and then load another roll.

    • @DavidHancock

      First thing to check is if you have the batteries in correctly. If so, is the battery compartment glean? What conditions are you testing the camera in?

    • @marissaschut6582
      @marissaschut6582 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the positive side is to the battery cap, then I think they're in backwards. I think these are negative toward the battery cap.

    • @marissaschut6582
      @marissaschut6582 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No the negative side is toward the battery cap, just like you showed in the video

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay. Got it. So assuming that the batteries are both good, then it sounds like there's an issue with eiteher the circuitry or the LEDs. So her's how to text that.
      Put the camera into auto and point it at a light bulb (the ISO should be 400 and the aperture on the lens f/5.6.) That should give you a shutter speed of between 1/30 and 1/500, depending on the light bulb's wattage. So a quick shutter speed. Next, point it at a wall without a light on it. The shutter speed should be noticeably slower. If it is not, then you know that there's a problem with the circuit board on the camera. If it is, then you know there's an issue with the LEDs (likely they burned out or the power connection to them has been damaged somehow.)
      The other thing to try is if the shutter speeds are different with manual shutter speed settings. Again, if they aren't, then it's a circuit board problem. Unfortunately, these cameras are prone to problems with their circuit boards.

    I'm a beginner to photography in general but i have this exact camera. This question will sound basic and stupid to photographers I'm sure but can someone explain why the shutter speed adjusted when the F stop value was changed? Did the shutter speed increase as a lower Fstop value allows more light in? If so, why would this be more beneficial than a higher F value? I hope this makes sense

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a stupid question at all. Old film cameras speak a different language than modern cameras. Your camera is in automatic mode, so when you select an aperture the camera will pick the best shutter speed for that aperture to obtain a proper exposure. If you want to experiment with exposure control, switch to manual mode.

      David Hancock okay thanks :) and another problem I’m having on this specific camera. I’m halfway through a roll of film and the rewind knob has stopped rotating while advancing. I checked to see if everything was okay under the door (in a dark room of course) but everything looks okay. The film has very little slack, the film is sat okay and is being pulled by the grips okay. I don’t wanna keep advancing to see if it’s working and missing shots when it doesn’t. Any ideas? Thank you in advance

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maxh98492 It might be that the film didn't align properly on the take up spool. Or there could be an issue with the frame counter. I'd develop the roll and it's it's half black then there's a question of how to prevent that. If not, everything works well.
