What's funny is I actually had that experience with a friend. He got our shift (firemen) of guys (8) to help move. We all showed up and nothing was packed. He was eating breakfast with family. Guys were not happy. What was really funny was his wife knew nothing about us coming. In 3 hours, we got all the furniture loaded into several pick ups and one van. Took to new house and placed in rooms. Wife gave us money for beer and wings at Hooters. Only stipulation was her husband wasn't going. He had to stay back and help her finish up the next 3 days. We offered to come back after things were packed. She said nope, he needs to learn his lesson. We never let him hear the end of that.

Sadly, this might be normal in most English speaking countries.
      I'm from Canada.
We were supposed to load up a moving truck in the morning in about 2 hours, and we were packed up quite a bit, but we had so much clutter to work on still. We ended up finishing packing after about 12 hours.
It was a weird situation, too, because both owners bought each other's home, and the new owners were already tearing up old carpet and eating pizza for supper while we were still packing.
It felt like such a nightmare.

I know people with houses FULL of the things...those dusty little things that cost $1 to make, but YOU paid $20 for.

Growing up this way is what made me into the start packing a month before person that I am. Last moving day came and the professional movers were even impressed...everything was at the new place in 45minutes...only 15 minutes for them to load up the truck! I am also a master unpacker and have the entire place together (sans things that need buying) by that evening. I always make sure I have wifi and furniture that I know I want arriving and in place 2 hours after I've moved everything to the new house. I had all the praise from my friends in the last move. It's how I deal with the trauma of my parents coming upstairs on moving day and saying "throw your clothes in plastic bags...throw everything into plastic bags!" and then living out of boxes and bags and air mattresses for weeks.

My roommate waited until two days before she moved to fill a handful of boxes and put the rest in trash bags for her move.

My sister is a total procrastinator. Before she bought her house and was renting places, she would Pay rent at one place that she was moving into but still pay rent for the place that she was moving out for an extra month so that she had an entire month to move all her stuff from one place to another and organize it. I’ve always moved everything in one day. Seems like a waste of extra rent money just cuz you’re lazy… but that’s what she did.

15 years ago a work friend asked, "Hey Mark, you think you could swing by my house later and move a couch...," he paused long enough for me to think it was a couch going from upstairs to downstairs, I said "sure." Then he said, "...to St Paul?" 30 min drive each way. Plus delivering it. Only because I had a truck. I think he bought me McDonald's for lunch the next day. He said, "you can have anything on the menu."

And make fucking sure everything is packed, cannot stand when the guys that are moving don't carry a single box cause they're still busy filling these. And last but not least, return the pleasure on day.

Being from Chicago, really dig your skits...even the Bears jokes (not like it's been hard making fun of da Bears since 2006). My wife is from East Tennessee and told her to check your stuff out to gain some insight on Midwest people including her in-laws. Last time I moved, I asked my brother if he could help and the response I got was, "go Bears!". When he didn't show up on moving day I asked where he was and the response I got was, "I said go Bears".
Would love to see your take on urban vs rural Midwest people. For example, it's amazing how different Chicago folks are compared to people from the rest of Illinois!
