I can't imagine the frustration you boys must be feeling. The expense is terrible enough, but the delays and the pressure to deliver for your neighbours must be causing some sleepless nights. I love your approach to the dramas you face as farmers, though. Your teamwork is the key. It's great to see.
Is that a sad sight or what! A combine being towed back home in the middle of harvest. That hurts. There’s a lot to be said for the simpler mechanical days of farming when drive chains were simpler and a grease gun was the preventative maintenance tool of choice? Good luck lads. Great video again.
Just watched this video then read the comments, sometimes I just really don’t know what to think, I’m an old farmer and contractor and if only the business and finance sectors involved in the industry could see what you have to go through just to get a crop off maybe they might be a little more understanding! And I really hope that a lot of these so called environmentalists who are demanding that we go down the vegan road get a good idea of how hard it is to give them their really cheep, healthy food ! I’d really like to see them do your job for a month then see what they have to say! Keep at it Mat.✌️
Boy the life of a farmer. All the mod cons and the diligence you do in maintaining your equipment is amazing but still problems. We all wish you every success Jackson Brothers
Hey Matt, love the positive attitude you have with these breakdowns. And thank you for documenting it all for us to follow. Just think in years to come you can show your children and grandchildren. Great stuff mate.
What I call a comb has the big long fingers, the front with the reel an open front and I call the whole machine a header. I think it's just an Aussie thing , everywhere else calls is a combine, which is a combination of a stiripper and a winnower. The first mechanical harvesting type machines just stripped the heads off and then they had to go through a winnower to get thrashed and cleaned which is stationary usually in the corner of the paddock . The combination of the stripper or header and the winnower in to one machine is shortened to a combine. That's my understanding of it anyways.
@@landlifem5872 The machine was invented here, our machine our name. The original machine was built by Sunshine in Victoria in the early ‘20s and was known as a Sunshine Header Harvester. It quickly was shortened to Header. The layout of drum, straw walkers and shaker box came from the big threshing machines but the comb or front to get it into the drum was the big break through. All down to Headlie Shipard Taylor in his blacksmith shop in Henty in NSW. Look him up. Jeff
@@jefftheaussie2225 yeah I've heard of the henty story, I live nearby . There was a video put out in the 90's called heritage farming in Australia , it gave some explanation in to the header story .

I feel your pain, last year the brake linings disintegrated on the tractor and contaminated everything.. hydraulic pump, steering orbitrol, gearbox. Luckily like yourselves being able to repair most in-house saves a fortune.
Matt n regards to the header tank on the radiator I assume you mean on top of the core itself . If the radiator shop is any good they should be able to fabricate a brass header to replace the plastic header. I owned a radiator shop and so I know it can be done. Good luck.
This must be so frustrating, all the modern technology these days but still breakdowns occur. Hope everything's back to work by the time you read this Matt, good luck to you and everyone for the rest of the season.
Hey Matt, thanks so much for these videos. As a non farmer, I find it intriguing how much you all do and the variety of what you all do....for all your collective hard work you guys (and every farmer) should be applauded for the tenacity and experience you put in to give average jo citizen the ability to open up his cardboard box in the morning and have his weetbix...
We have all been there, went to do silage. Mower went wrong, Then the tedder went wrong and then the wrapper went wrong all in one day, plus the main tractor had no engine after that went wrong spraying the week before, lovely. As long as everyone is ok, then its not that bad a day.
Wow Matt. What week. I really feel for you guys. Just a thought re the grader rad. Could you do the repair on the tank and also install a decent over temp alarm or combination alarm engine shutdown. I know they cost a bit, but might get you going with a bit of piece of mind. Best of luck to you all for the rest of harvest time.

Tough, frustrating few days Matt.. Best Wishes as you all work together to overcome these setbacks.. as you so correctly note, still more fortunate than those who cant get on to their paddocks.. or some like those down here in Vic last week, that got smashed by hail
Hi Matt, with all the drit and garbage that on the crops after the floods been over it going load every thing up with extra load ie; all the bearings are going be loaded to the Max!! Not much can be done about it!! Has any the grains been close to discounted with to much drit/mud?? Remember during the 1980's drought there was one fellow I know out near Cobra had wheat rejected from having to much drit mixed in from travelling too fast in rough country dipping the corner of the comb in the ground, the damage that that header had done to it that year by the drit just wore it out!!
Mineing co here had Hyd pump problems like that in Cat 988 major problems sold it as wrecker too much too replace & clean it all so Yeah ya got big job on there
That's a bit of a bad run with break downs Matt. Great work keeping positive about everything that's happened. I was thinking if it was going to take awhile for parts could you use the 8080 header to fill some of the gaps. The oil sight window I have found them to be made out of glass or clear plastic. We had a glass one cracked on a air compressor and was leaking i replaced it with plastic one. Not sure which one was the best. Thanks for the video updates. 👍
It looks like you might have a job and a half to get all the metal out of the system, 😢 a few industrial strength magnets might help , the old 8080 might get a second run better than nothing there is probably a old sunshine hidden away somewhere if the 8080 needs a back up as well 😅, it just wouldn’t be harvest with more drama than ( Blue healers) the tv show . Thanks for the update .
Must be so frustrating having done all that winter maintenance, and still having major problems. Any breakup in the hydraulic system is so difficult yo flush out fully. Saw a JD tech on TH-cam in America and they had to replace every pipe on the machine as all the insides were coated with a metallic paste, think it was a warrantee job. Hope it goes well when back together
Can feel the Boys frustration..you do everything to prevent a breakdown! maintainence..repairs.. replacement...But there's alway's something..is there any comeback on the company that overhaul the two hydro stat motor's?..last time i sat on a header in Vic doing 15k..it was only doing 400/ha..took an age to fill the bin! Surprised that no one has an exchange service for these harvester parts. I see cutting edge engineering has an exchange repair for big dozer parts but no one has similar service for header or tractor parts in Oz, particularly when these machine are getting quite long in the tooth.
I really enjoy your skills as a family group. But as an old farmer please, apply plenty of 50 + sunscreen and perhaps broad brimmed hats . I have had a grade four melanoma removed, wasn’t fun! Keep well, keep filming?
Fascinating video as always Matt. I know headers always need repairs. And I also know new ones are eye-wateringly expensive. How many separator hours have your headers done,, and do you have a replacement strategy?
Thanks dave, part of the reason we got another header is to halve the hours per header meaning we won’t have to by a new one as quickly, they both have a bit over 2000 rotor hrs👍

Just curious. How do you get all the tiny fragments out of the number 1 hydraulics. Do you create a plate to bolt onto the output with a manifold to hook to a bunch of hoses from a tractor. With a 55 gallon drum or 2 of hydraulic oil being pumped into number one. The returns going into more barrels with magnets and filters. Or do you fill your diesel fuel trailer full of hydraulic oil to keep number 1 hydraulic tank full while the return to the tank is run to the catch drums for filtering.
