  • In the fight against climate change, Penelope Lea (15) has become one of Norway’s most important voices. She has been an environmentalist since she was eight years old. As the leader of the Norwegian Children's Climate Panel, she has given several engaging speeches. This year, she became the second youngest UNICEF ambassador of all time.
When she visited our live stream of The Scream this week, she performed her personal interpretation of the painting.
Today, it may seem as though the Scream motif is more relevant than ever. The motif has constantly emerged as a picture of the collective anxiety in the face of a global crisis.
The image appears in political demonstrations against everything from right-wing populism, anti-abortion legislation and Brexit to global warming. As an image for the climate crisis, it is particularly apposite. In contrast to what many people believe, it is the landscape, not the figure, which is screaming, according to Munch’s own texts he: “... felt the great Scream in nature”.

Beautyful. My heart is sad. I had planned making a visit this year. But mother earth had different plans. We all hear her scream now. And hopefully more will make changes take action. Love Nicky.x.
