I got my cat from a shelter over 15 years ago and told the volunteer that I was thinking of declawing my cat . She gave me this judgmental look that I’ll never forget and then explained the procedure to me. I’m grateful that she did. I’ve had multiple cats throughout the years and I’ve never gotten them declawed. I just bought a bunch of scratch posts.
My cat isn't declawed and my relatives still bug me about it even though my cat is trained not to use her claws anywhere but on her scratching post. I hate it when they come over because they always make snide comments about how I should get her declawed because THEY don't like that she has them and won't go near her.
Their claws is literally one of the very few things that they can use to protect themselves. I cannot imagine how they would be able to survive not only without their owners but also their last tools of protection.
Try not letting them go outside where the danger is… or stop inviting all that danger in the house that they need protection from… I had a cat named Bootsie…. No claws… did NOT want to be inside EVER once she got a taste of the outside… she rarely left the yard but NO cat, bird, mouse or other rodent, insect or even dogs were safe from her… she was NOT playing if you came into her yard…. Sweet as pie… 22years she lived… I didn’t clip her, just so you know, she was rescued… pound-pooditat… she came clipped. Badassed kitty though… not a claw and nothing escaped her… she was afraid of NOTHING… soooo…. Yeah… she did juuuust fine.

The ONLY time you should declaw your cat is if it's for a valid medical condition, then you kinda have to. But if it's a healthy cat, there's ZERO valid reason to declaw them.
Thank you for sharing, lots of people do not think about the downsides of actually declawing your animal. This will help spread awareness to the people who don't bother doing research
This is horrible, thank you for sharing it in such a way, this actually shows the clear damage and discomfort this surgery causes, it’s disgusting, if you don’t want the claws don’t get the animal, good grief
When I was a little girl, I once went looking for a cat and saw a free cat post online . I begged my parents and we went to go pick her up. When I got her she was de-clawed but, it was only her front paws. On top of that, she was an outside cat before this.. I just thought because she was de-clawed it was too dangerous. One day she got out, and I was frantic when I heard a cat hissing and ran to the noise. I saw her use her front paws to balance and was using her back claws to defend herself. it was actually pretty amazing. I ran to them but she made it run off. I always think about that cat. Now I know this is what she went through.. that’s heartbreaking.
My cat is declawed too, but I was super little, so I couldn't control it. Plus, it's just her front paws. She's doing fine :)) I got death threats because of it tho
My cat was declawed on the front, and there’s no way this is how they did it, because she still grows a little nubby of a claw on a few of her toes, which wouldn’t be possible if they’d completely amputated the bone
The scratches I have from my cats are tokens of memories. They hurt at first, but the remaining scars will always fondly remind me of them. Declawing cats is ABUSE. Edit: to everyone calling me or cat people masochists, YOU'RE TAKING IT THE WRONG WAY 😭 I have 5 visible scratches (among countless others) on my body left behind by 4 cats on separate occasions BY ACCIDENT. One happened when I was a kid, while I tried to separate my cat from fighting the neighbors cat, and he struck my arm instead. I cried so much because the wound was deep, and I had to be taken to the ER. I was scared of my cat for awhile, but overtime, I just understood that having cats mean you have the chance of getting scratched. Was I angry at the cats? No, they're ACCIDENTS. Two of the cats that left visible scars have passed away, and that's why the scratches they left behind are now token of memories. So please, please just stop accusing me or other cat people as masochists 😭

May I ask why people declaw their cats ? When I heard about the term "declaw", I thought it was just cutting their nails (which sometimes necessary buy many people in my country including me don't do it since it's taking away their ability to hunt and protect themselves. Even tho house cat don't need to hunt for food anymore, sometimes they just want to hunt). But cutting their claws completely like this seems too cruel.
@user-bd9jm4vd1t generally it's because cats do things like claw up furniture if you don't provide them with something like a scratching post. my parents had one of our cats declawed after he took a swipe at me for messing with his tail and he left me with a pretty good gash on my face (which i absolutely deserved) it's a lazy "solution" to normal cat behaviors used by people who don't understand their pets and don't feel like caring for them properly. there are some medical conditions that might require declawing for the sake of saving the cat, but bearing in mind that you're permanently disabling your cat by doing it i still get the ick. personally, depending on how old your cat is, i think prolonging their life that way can be incredibly inhumane.
@@liamsweeney1620 A lot of cats still use furniture even if there is a scratching post. Most people who declaw their cats tried scratching posts. But that's still no reason to declaw your cat!! If you get a cat, you should be aware that the cat might scratch some of your stuff.

My cat came to me declawed after he was dumped at a shelter for behavioral issues. Nobody would adopt him because he was so angry. He's learned to trust me and give better indication that he's irritated instead of going straight to biting hard and kicking with his back claws. I know his feet always hurt, it's why he lays on his back to get preasure off them, instead of tucking his paws under him like normal. He'll ask for my assistance if he needs down from something high, before he jumps, because the impact is painful. He also struggles with weight problems from laziness due to pain and not wanting to be active, let alone that he can not ever go outside and feel grass on his little deformed paws. If you don't respect or understand cats, that's fine, don't have one as a pet!! There is no law stating that you have to own a cat. So why put one through this just so you feel comfortable owning it? My mom's toes went necrotic during a heart related medical crisis. This happened because of a lack of blood flow in her extremities' capillaries; basically the same thing as losing your toes to frostbite. I cannot convey nor fully imagine just how tortuous living without toes is for her. There is pain with every step. Our feet, as well as cat paws, have developed with the need for toes as part of the design. Removing the bones and thus severing the tendons creates so many mechanical issues that radiate up from the feet, into the knees, hips, and back. For many injuries, our bodies can eventually adapt, but without toes, there isn't some other part of the foot or leg that can compensate. Declawing creates a permanent disability for the cat. So let's get the word out to our friends and family! This video is wonderfully apt and the more people that know the facts, the less likely an owner will choose such a drastic option for their kitties. 🤍🧡🩶🤎🖤🤎🩶🧡🤍

I work at a vet clinic and we do not offer declawing. We have had a few people ask. I had one client I was working with ask and I explained that we can trim nails regularly or even place Kitty caps if she really wanted. She kept saying how she wished she could declaw her cat cause he kept scratching her roommate. I told her about the declawing process, what it is, what it means and entails, the extremely long healing process, arthritis, associated mobility issues, and the chronic pain as well as behavioral issues (her cat is not scratching someone for the fun of it, he has a lot of energy and not enough outlet). She said she knows but still regrets not getting him declawed when he was little cause she just loves him so much she can’t have him scratching people but can’t give him up. She’s a nice lady and I’ve seen how much she absolutely loves this cat so this took me completely for a loop. I just don’t think she fully comprehend the absolute pain her beloved cat would be in. She was still by far the easiest ‘no declawing’ conversation I’ve ever had. She thankfully agreed to regular nail trims.
obviousky u never heard of using a laser instead of a scalpel blade. ive seen 100s of them done while working in vet clinics and the cats running around after sx. yeah u use guillotines thrn its much more dramatic even the scalpel is worst but with the laser u literally trace around the claw while stepping on the pedal and without removjng the entire toe u simply remove the nail from cats toe and leave saidntoe behind. its not the year 2000 anymore things have changed. u use the same laser machine u use for other sx and a hemostat and some skin glue. anesthesia wears off cats trying to run across the room. literally never seen a single laser declaw come back with any coomplications or inability to walk like normal a week later.
Yeah I really don’t think this whole “gentle parenting” approach is the way to go for that conversation. You should just ask them how they’d feel about having their fingers cut off and then explain that declawing is basically the same thing.

If it's for looks on a regular house dog, then yeah it should be banned. However having the ears or tail docked can save the life of a livestock guardian dog when it's performing its duties. Predators, like wild canines, like to grab onto the ears and tail which leaves terrible injuries. If I remember correctly, a predator can scalp a dog by ripping their ears off. I do agree that it feels barbaric to us who have only had house pets, but it's nessisarry out in the country.
Cats also scratch as a form of stress relief, exercise, and marking territory. To declaw them is to rob them of those pleasures. Most people are simply ignorant of this. I’ve found that once people are educated on the horrors of declawing cats, and they realize it’s not good for them, most people change. People love their pets, I don’t think most people are trying to hurt their animals on purpose.
@@timdec5488 it entirely robs them of this function. There are no claws to scratch with. No satisfying grip and tug on the material, no gripping to enhance the stretch they get in their front legs while scratching vertically. They continue to do the motion because scratching is a natural and instinctive behavior for them. Without claws, this behavior goes unrewarded by all the good feelings they get from the behavior of scratching. A cat cannot scratch if it does not have claws; therefore, the function is entirely lost as a result of declawing. 👍

Good on you for both refusing to offer it, and politely explaining why! We need more people like you
obviousky u never heard of using a laser instead of a scalpel blade. ive seen 100s of them done while working in vet clinics and the cats running around after sx. yeah u use guillotines thrn its much more dramatic even the scalpel is worst but with the laser u literally trace around the claw while stepping on the pedal and without removjng the entire toe u simply remove the nail from cats toe and leave saidntoe behind. its not the year 2000 anymore things have changed. u use the same laser machine u use for other sx and a hemostat and some skin glue. anesthesia wears off cats trying to run across the room. literally never seen a single laser declaw come back with any coomplications or inability to walk like normal a week later.
Yeah I really don’t think this whole “gentle parenting” approach is the way to go for that conversation. You should just ask them how they’d feel about having their fingers cut off and then explain that declawing is basically the same thing.

It hurts my heart when I think about declawed cats 💔 when I first got my kittens I’ve trained them to not scratch the furniture, fast forward 5 years and they still never scratched our furniture. If people learn how to train their cats properly there won’t be a need for declawing. I also have velvet furniture and it seems that cats don’t like this material to file their nails. I buy them plenty of scratch pads and they also have an old chair I got for free from marketplace that they can use to scratch. No need to mutilate them 😫💔

This isn't always doable. I've had many cats that will never use claws on your stuff. Can we also talk about tail docking and ear cropping too!!!❤❤❤❤
If it's for looks on a regular house dog, then yeah it should be banned.
Declawed cats still “scratch” as if they have claws. This doesn’t rob them of this function.
@@ilikefood420 you said it’s a form of stress relief, exercise, and marking territory. All that is accomplished without the claw being present. The nail itself has little to do with the act.
@@timdec5488 the nail itself has everything to do with the act of scratching 😂 a cat cannot scratch if they’re missing their nails!
@@ilikefood420 yes. That is the point. Have you ever observed a declawed cat?
