I love this game. It has a good ranking system that calculates your style, speed, combo and damage score. Getting 5 skulls in every category S rank the missions unlocks action figure toys in the bonus viewer. It becomes more like a puzzle game keeping the beat count high while moving effecenitly. Pro Tip: If you click L3 in you move faster.
After recently playing through this game in 2020 I can't help but feel this might have intended for release on the Dreamcast. It has all the feels of a single analog control (which should've been dual), slow lumbering, SEGA produced, arcade style, Dreamcast game. Also appears to have been released July 2002 when the Dreamcast faded in 2001. Not sure, but interesting none the less. Cheers.
You should totally check out Shinobi (2002) for the PS2. It's a super obscure character action game where you have a sword that gets stronger the more it kills so you have to combo enemy kills to beef up your sword so you can kill any enemy in one slice (even bosses) and perform a "Tate", in which you're shown how you sliced all your enemies in a super stylish short cinematic. And you can also do that Also the art direction is just awesome.
That's the one with the big red scarf right? I've had that on my radar for a good while, but haven't picked it up yet. I'm sure I will at some point though.
I really like this game and I thank this channel for introducing me to it's existence but this review sells the game short I mean the game does have an in depth scoring system and movement isn't bad I'd you just 'GIT GUD' I mean the boss fight where the game wants you to doge and jump is completely doable and has no need to stock up on demolition shots. All you have to do is run towards him by clicking in L3 and shooting whilst locking on and then and then diving to the side (hold down square to 'shootdodge') when he goes for a punch, also imputing a direction and pressing L2 allows to quick turn allowing to start shooting again. I'm sorry this seems a little whiny but I hate seeing the wrong info being told as fact in terms of the movement
I thought the anime came first. Man I love cell shading and "drawn" textures. Aesthetically 2000s as fuck. This looks like something Pan Pizza would play. Dunno if I would though.
I remember my friend telling me Gungrave was based on a game after finishing watching the anime, and that hyped me the fuck up. While drenched in sexy A E S T H E T I C, glad I never did more than just think about what the game could be. Sick deep cuts, bro.
Never played the first one but i L O V E the second one. with 2 unlockable chars with unique movesets each, unlockable "cheats" and you can dodge roll etc in the second one. edit: also, the pauze menu is the best ive seen in any game ever (freezes the screen in action and you can rotate around your model watching what was going on in that frame you pauzed the game on aka fucking epicness most of the time).
I just finished Overdose and i really loved it too, it is a big change from the first game (and i love when people don't stick to the same exact game design but rather try to spice things up). Beign a very dinamic game i enjoyed the longer levels and longer story overall, however i must say the thing that really ruins the experience for me are what i define as cancer-rooms, where the game design gets so bad the game just becomes unplayable (my first run was on hard mode and oh boy did i rage against some mini boss rooms...). I'm Going to play G.O.R.E when i finish a run with all the 3 characters, im so excited! =)
@@smily1502 its been a while but I think i worked my way up to the harder difficulties. Also, billy is one of the coolest unlockable characters in any game ever to me. I mean, an electric guitar as a ranged weapon by shooting electric shocks.. And his overal animations/moveset just so epic. Gore seems rough to me personally; no destructible environments in a gungrave game is like no skateboard in a tony hawk game to me.
@@zydian_ yeah, i've heard some really bad things about gore like a lot of games that come out in this "gaming era". I'm actually really sorry to read that because it's literally one of the things i hoped would never change in Gungrave (the destructible scenary) , however i'll still give the game a chance since i may end up liking the game even with all its flaws =(. I'm currently playing a run as kabane but a lot of people seem to like RB A LOT more, so i can't be anything but ELECTRIFIED for my next run (you can dislike the comment now) XD Thanks for the reply 2 years later BTW, amazed to see so many people still enjoying one of my favorite games =)

A few weeks ago I finally found the game "10.000 Bullets" another "great" (?) 3rd person Shooter...you should really check it out, it has his ups and downs, but I found it wierdly addictive and FUN despite the flaws...oh and the music in the game.... I remember trying to find John Woo style dmc games on ps2 and could only find 10,000 bullets and was like meh - I just recently found out about gungrave and I am very impressed! Before dmc 3 - gungrave overdose had the stylish electric guitar 🎸 attack! It’s really bothering me that I’m just now finding info on gungrave as a die hard John Woo fan - both movies/games!
Only thing that really holds that game back is that there isn't a mission select option not even when you finished the game. And if I remember correctly, you can skip "cutscenes". The gameplay is fun though.

Ah. Gungrave. Pure mindless fun. I had memories of it while playing Vanquish recently. Run down the hallway, shoot all the things and slide around in a discount Iron Man suit.

THOR! I've been waiting for you to pick this series up. Been playing Overdose on PS3 and BY GOD IS IT GOOD. It's not the best level design (and it's a little f*ckin' repetitive) but the combination of enemy composition and partially shitty controls really makes the late game on higher difficulties a bit of a challenge. That and it makes you feel like you're playing through a 90s action anime. Great to see you've reviewed the first game as I haven't been able to pick it up. The sequel though is pretty goddamned good (through RB's game-play alone). This one though has me drawn to it though as it's kinda got a sleek noire-y feel the other game doesn't have. Anyways great review as usual and keep up the good work! PS - have you ever considered picking up Drakengard 3? If you loved the twisted narrative and emotional strain of playing the first game Drakengard 3 will hit you right in the feels and then some...again.
Yes! I actually picked up Drakengard just because I was interested in Drakengard 3 to begin with. Figured I needed to know the story and stuff. I'll probably do 2 before then though. Seems like the right thing to do, despite it looking a bit meh.

These reviews of old games comparing them to todays standards are crap, I used to play this game all the time I never had trouble with the controls, in fact all the reviews I've seen for this game in particular you all do the same thing with the backjumping and backshot its dumb, yall think it looks cool but it just makes it look tryhardy.

Gungrave 1&2 were my fuck. Even had a gungrave poster in my room as a yungun . This was a gang I always wanted to get a good next gen sequel

It's basically Jazzy Matrix with vampire gunslingers, the story's pretty meh but gameplay is real good
