Coal worker strike in beautiful city!!
Poor Coal Plant workers need to walk through fields and forests to get to work.
"build us a road" exclaims Gary, a 65 year old sim who has lived in beautiful city his
whole life. "Its pathetic that a mayor who claims to be a city planner would allow
such an over site" another anonymous employee shouted. The angry mob
that has gathered in front of the mayors house this morning demand answers.
For years now these poor workers have braved the 30km trek in all weather and
pleas to the mayor still go unnoticed.

As far as the states’ land right situation this exact thing happened in Arlington, Texas for the construction of the Dallas Cowboy Stadium(aka Jerry World). Been a resident here for 21 years and about 10 years ago when the plans were okayed, the Jones family bought nearly 5 square miles of dense apartment housing and section 8 housing right from under the residents. He gave them a bit of time to move out( I think it was like a year) and then completely leveled the whole area. It was sad because kids I went to school with and people you saw in town were all defeated and depressed because their lives had just been sold away for a fucking football stadium. I think the Jones’ family and Arlington City Council should be put in prison. Thousands of people and millions of dollar of potential revenue in the neighboring businesses, restaurants, utilities, etc. for a big building we use 3 months out of the year on every other weekend. I get it makes a lot of money too but we are literally talking about 4/5 blocks of housing destroyed to the ground for a stadium. Something is wrong with this world.

Jones do idiotic thngs that don't actually make as much money as it could had they used their brains. Arlington builds shit like this supposedly for "tourism dollars" right? Well, I'm not sure that's working too well when people come to DFW airport just to find out there's not even a weekend bus to get to Arlington and they have to rent a car or uber there. Arlington is also ranked as one of the single worst cities for tourists and I am not even a bit surprised. Stadiums in super non urban areas are a money risk and I can only MAYBE see the Arlington council make real change when traffic starts getting compared to China.

This is what I mean not only as doing things bad for people but literal stupid money losing decisions. The Northeast mall is one of the only malls around with a single floor and the reason I think it does ok is bc it has some entertainment and restaurants around. Its like what Ive seen people call the hulen mall. Not a place people shop but a daycare for bored teens. Then they wonder why theres fights and shit. Everyone is bored and entertainment not at home is too damn expensive. I seriously have a feeling DFW is not as successful as they claim and reality will shake it hard one day.

@@elliotw4606Yes Northeast Mall. they had built far too much retail in DFW. I believe they had the most square foot of retail per capita. Every suburb in DFW was trying to get in on the act. there was an explosion of retail development around the malls in the 90s. Arlington had 3 malls at one time. Northeast Mall was one of the original malls in Tarrant county. I am surprised it survived as long as it did. It went through 2 renovations in the 90s. I barely remember how it used to look before the first renovation in the 80s but I remember they used to allow smoking in there and I remember seeing ash trays throughout the mall.

Be careful with Cities Skylines, its more addicting than you think.
Not only is there the traditional expansion elements, you have much finer control of zoning, and extremely detailed traffic management, which can be made more realistic with a couple mods. I personally end up spending at very least 30 minutes on a single freeway interchange. Since it has DLC, there's several more sides of the content that you can better access including parks, tourisim, and more. Just don't go too far with mods, its easy to push one's computer to far.

It also came with a tile maker, so you could make custom buildings. I came to SC:2000 a little late, as in found it in the bargain bin, and it came with SCURK (SimCity Urban Renewal Kit) and there were so many add-ons like SimCopter. It was so much fun to build a city big enough to start making arcologies, then launching them into space. I had a great time with it.

The only cost you really had to think about was the one you had to pay to the bulldozer crews.

I was a student of Regional Economic and Social Development masters program at UMass, Lowell when I was a heavy Sim City player. In fact, one of my classes was City Management and my professor was the actual former City Manager of the City of Lowell. I ended up not becoming an urban planner, but a software engineer, but one thing I learned in both my courses and playing Sim City is to never build an interstate that cuts right through the middle of a city, because one side of town may flourish, will the other side of town will have businesses close down, abandoned properties and high crime. In fact, that's exactly what happened when I build an interstate that cuts across a city in Sim City. So I ask myself, if urban planning case studies taught us against this and Sim City teaches us against this, why on Earth would the urban planners of Austin, Texas go and build an I-35 that cuts right across the city and continues to slice up the city with all these highways? Are their urban planners all baby boomers? Is urban planning in Texas behind the times compared to universities in Massachusetts? I mean even Boston threw I-93 underground and now the city is more beautiful for it. Help me understand this intellectual urban planning disconnect between Austin and the rest of the country. By the way around 16:50 I started to see urban blight where you started to use your eminent domain powers. It would be interesting to hear your analysis as to why you started to get urban blight in those neighborhoods you ended up razing to avoid this in the real world.

This is a game so he is not thinking as much as he would a real city. Thus mocking him for his skill as a city planner is quite idiotic. He only went though the same thought process. Not the same amount of work.
He also completely disregarded morality as the Sims are just lines of code. Thus morals mean nothing to them. As long as it is legal he would treat it as a possible means to achive the desired result.
I am not an idiot, to be honest I am highly above average in terms of my intellect and maturity. Please dont get me wrong, I am not intending to come off as arrogant, but was just correcting you on a assumption you made about me.

As a sim builder for many years, it's cool to hear how our design and build motifs are similar: we both enjoy organic design, built in sections, with just enough grid to allow for functionality. I've always tried to build my cities like that in these games to give the city character. Finding that balance is a very rewarding function of the game to me.
    Thanks for the video!
You're going to really enjoy Cities Skylines. As you surmised though, you will get hooked. There are so many nuances and additional items you can do to improve the function and form of the city compared to any of the Sim Cities games. For example, I think I spent at least 12 hours building out walkways and catwalks around my entire city for foot traffic (combined a large amount of trees, ramps, underground tunnels, and extensive park and neighborhood connections). Adding walking/riding paths really layers a city beautifully and can be a very time consuming task to get it just right. It's extremely rewarding though!
As an aside, I studied architecture. Though I never followed through with a degree in it, I still love design and planning immensely. :)

I took an Urban Planning class when I played SC2000,... it was pretty accurate when you compare it to later SCs. I made a low density residential area on a hill because my population center has gotten too choked, I expected some low to mid suburban area, it turned into mansions r us.
I tried both way of planning, the gridlocked highly planned city, and laidback biologically zoned ones. Later, the most restrictive highly planned turns into a communist ghost city, and the less micromanaging I did, it turned into a more vibrant city.

Sim City 4 was awesome! I'd do full regions with each region being 200,000+ and some close to the 1 million!

I feel Des Moines is doing an excellent job revitalizing their downtown! Everyone who lives in cities like NYC, Chicago, LA, etc., think of Des Moines as a little village, but we hold our own out here as a nice, modern vibrant city! Sure, we don't have major NFL, NBA, or NHL teams, but that doesn't bother me, as I"m not really into sports (we have minor leagues, though).
Des Moines is the city the entire nation focuses on once every four years (for the caucuses).
Hope everyone gets a chance to visit our fair city once in their lifetime!

Nathan Bush CB guy here! I can't stand driving through Des Moines 😜. I drive through I-80E quite a bit because I go to school at Iowa.
