People need to get their facts checked. Firstly China is NOT the only one building facilities on these reefs nor is it the first. Malaysia has had a dual use airport on Layang Layang since the early 90s. Vietnam has also build up their facilities and the Philippines has had a runway on Pagasa since the 1970s China's claims mirror Taiwan as legacy claims from pre CCP take over of the Mainland in 1949. Nor is distance from a country an indicator of legitimate claim or toherwise since Guam isn't anywhere near the US (or for the matter Hawaii) both coerced into being part of the United States. Countless other countries like France and the UK retain vestiges of colonial past taken by force of action or claimed like Falklands, Ascension Island. They have been doing illegal fishing around the North Natuna sea, a new territory in Indonesia that Indonesia signed with the US so no one will come close to the Natuna Islands. According to the Chinese government, they recognized the Natuna seas as indonesia's territory, but yet they still let their fisherman to go fishing there. And when Indonesia sinks their ship, they get mad and blame it on us.

Malaysia has had a dual use airport on Layang Layang since the early 90s.
