    Hoods are usually a good pannel to learn on, but you picked a hard one. Yea, it's a simple contour, but generally you want to spray with the direction of the body of the car, not across/up and down it, and that hood is short and wide, giving you a lot of opportunities to see things like tiger stripes.
    A few things that will make things go better next time (not that you didn't do REALLY well for a first try):
    - Navel Jelly is good stuff (any phosphoric acid prep works well). Rinse it off and get rid of the residue and go. You sanded off the rust protection it gave you.
    - Etching primer also has phosphoric acid in it... so you did that 2x ;-)
    - Etching primer is DTM (direct to metal) after you have it done you should have switched to a primer/surfacer/filler. Something that sprays down thicker and sands better. The Rustoleum stuff you used is good stuff.
    - sand with a longer/stiffer block than that sponge. If you used a filler primer and a long board you may have been able to sand out a lot of the hail damage.
    - Most Rustoleum spray cans will spray well in most positions, holding the can more parallel with the surface would have given you more even coverage faster and prevented the bump on the hood.

    • @WanderDano
      @WanderDano  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was pretty happy at the end not to have tiger stripes. Thanks for all the great tis - hopefully others will read your comment have have more insight on how to do this.

    Thank you for the crosshatch lesson to those watching. It is the number 1 thing I see everyone do wrong. Circles, Swirls, or only left to right. X and + is the pattern to sand in and you did a great job of it!

    I'm an auto painter. The naval jelly actually did you a favor. Without it the rust would have returned quickly. It would have started out with small bumps under the paint and progressing to blisters. Resulting in a failure of the finish. Good job looks good for your first attempt. 👍 also etch prime is for to protect the bare metal and help the paint stick. Next time get some primer surfacer it builds up better and is easier to sand.

    • @WanderDano
      @WanderDano  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tips!! :-) Glad I used the jelly and I've heard that if I would have wiped it down quicker I wouldn't have had the sanding issue. So a second different primer? I'll keep that in mind if I have to do this type of work again. all the best

    Very nice job. As long as you're not dealing with clear coat paint, what you did will come out fine with some patience and luck. I was cringing until you finally decided to remove the hood. No matter what your lying brain wants to tell you, no paint job will ever look as good unless you can lay out the parts and get them as flat as possible. @@WanderDano It looks like you've got some painting talent to me. How were you able to get such a close color match? Was it a standard Dodge color that Rustoleum had in stock? If so, you were lucky, since some van conversion companies get the van delivered in primer and then apply custom paint colors. I think that trubo spray can made all the difference too, The spray pattern looked pretty close to a factory air gun. I have a spot that needs painting on the Trek, so I'll have to give it a try.

      @@sarjim4381 Well - I admit while painting I thought I was doing better than when watching and editing the video. lol I ended up with a lot of paint on the tarp and my shoes! :-) The rustoleum turbo only comes in black and white.. the white was relatively close to the factory white. Being 100% I don't think I could have done very well with a normal rattle can the wide spray tip on turbo makes a HUGE difference. all the best

    Spray painting is an art hold the can 10" away and start & stop the spray before & after the edges of the hood for the best look 👍🏼after your first pass u should have let it dry, never try to cover in one coat slow and steady 🤷🏼‍♂️ multiple coats with time in between great job ✌🏼

      It may have not seemed that way but those were my intentions. lmao when I was doing it I thought that is what I was doing but I watched my video and was like way way too close. lmao Also, I did the start and stop thing off the hood .. so much so that I ended up painting a shoe I was wearing pretty well. :-) I waited 10 minutes between coats as pretty much every source I watched said to do. The most accurate comment I made was knowing and doing something like this is to different things and takes practice. lol

    I've tried white paint from rustoleum before, and without a UV resistant clear coat like a 2K clear coat can, it will yellow after about 8 months in sun. But maybe they have changed the recipe a bit. I doubt it. BUT if you get a UV clear coat over it soon it should hold up! Last time I bought them they were $20 a can, I would highly reccomend it!

    Nice job. Costs today have come to a point where unless you are painting a new vehicle, it is worth your while to paint it yourself. Its not that hard, just time consuming.
    Your before image shows paint damage in rectangles. My guess is you had stickers on the paint. Bad move. The glue damages the paint then promotes rust. and the magnetic stickers dont damage rust with glue, but they hold water, which can damage paint then promotes rust........ Just a thought.
    On the primer, you still need to chase that wet edge. Spray the first "line", then spray down the "wet edge" with the middle of the Primer spray. you should not see those lines if done right, at least not on the 2nd or 3rd coat.
    Wet sand, get the surface wet, and run your fingers over the primer, it will feel rough. sand with about 400 grit wet sandpaper, run your fingers over again, it should feel smooth, sand again for good measure, wipe dry, let dry for at least 30 minutes. you are ready to paint.
    when painting, again you follow the wet edge.
    The first coat they say you can go light with the paint, so it will look spotty. the 2nd coat should start clearing thatup, again, follow the wet edge.
    Your final coat should look "wet" with no streaks. If you see streaks in the wet paint, you will see them in the dry paint.
    You are doing a balancing act, getting enough paint on the surface but not enough to make the paint run.
    If you do have a run, it is not a deal breaker, wet sand it down smooth, if you sand to far you can paint again.

    • @WanderDano
      @WanderDano  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes when it got pretty bad I cut flat magnetic pieces and put stickers on there to try to cover the mess, knowing it wasn't helping it to stop from spreading. I am NOT a sticker person, I've never once in my life put a bumper sticker anywhere on a vehicle.
      I process you describe is what I did... well it what I TRIED my best to do. lol I think for my first time it turned out pretty darn good, no runs and really virtually no orange peel. It is still holding up really well.. I'd say almost shockingly well, after all this time and it being outside all the time. Thanks for you helpful points - all the best

    Watching this one carefully, since my van is now past the quarter-century mark, and paint flaws are beginning to appear. I don't think any of the previous owners ever waxed her, so I'm even considering taking her in for a re-spray (but yeah, that is damned expensive, so I would rather not). • @WanderDano
      @WanderDano  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I made the decision not to clear coat it. After the paint had set I gave it a good wax and continue to do so. I made the choice because I don't want the hood to stand out from the rest of the van. I did some research and people with more experience have said using wax instead can keep it in good shape. I have driven the van across country where pretty much everyday was above 100 degrees, it has been rained on.. alot, it is kept outside in the elements including freezing temps(single digits) and it continues to hold up great. Actually, my first choice would have been to be clear coat it but didn't want it to be a noticeable difference from the rest of the vans 23 year old original paint job. I'm still very pleased with this cheap DIY job and appears it will last many more years.

    • @WanderDano

      It's actually at 3 years now and holding up better than I thought possible. I still haven't clear coated and there are NO issues, again better than I expected. Went to bare metal because when I watch a couple videos of people trying to cut in with old paint it looked bad so I had to sand anyway so why not do the prep work right. I will be doing a video next month and show how it still looks.
