I think the hate largely stems from the views/side he defended during his debate with James Baldwin and his ardent support of the war in Vietnam.
His views on both changed though over time, but sadly. Most people don't know that.
Both Mr. Vidal and Mr. Buckley I've always admired - though for different reasons.
