Help me understand something. If the books of the Bible are written in chapter form, why do pastors pull a few verses from the book, but don't preach the chapter in it's entirety? Is the Bible a collection of verses only? Are chapters not written to introduce the subject and expound on it? What does pulling a few verses, and skipping the whole chapter, miss? Just a thought.

I suppose it’s like putting together a research paper. (?) You might choose quotations from a book or article or historical figure that you find apropos to flesh out your point. Just a thought.

      K. P. Janolis, firstly let me correct a misunderstanding. Although the modern Bibles have chapter and verses the original manuscript did not. The chapter and verse was added much later. It was a tool that was added to make reference and study easier.
The original new testament is mostly a collection letters written to the Church. Like any letter or conversation there can be short snippets and longer portions that cover a number and variety of topics with 1 general overall theme to the whole letter.
Also remember the time frame these were written. Our 'snail mail' would have been an extremely quick delivery. So you want to make the most of what you put in and can see why they went on for many 'pages' of text.

But to address your original concern of why this verse or that verse was picked to preach upon and not the whole chapter.
      Multiple reasons.
      1) Time. Many can hardly sit through 30 minutes of sermon let alone FLC's 1.5-2hrs.
      2) You should have a copy of your own Bible so you can go back and verify from reading the whole chapter(s) that the verse or verses used was used correctly and in context. Brother Moore is very big about this. He emphasizes that everyone should verify that what is preached lines up correctly. Not just from other preachers but from him too.
      3) Like I mentioned in the previous post, there is an overall theme, but you can have 'truth nuggets' on a different subject that is only covered by this one verse in the whole chapter.
For example if I was preaching about not placing your trust in money or things, but in God alone I give you this 1 verse (1Tim 6:17) out of the chapter preach on it, then go to a complete different verse in another book. It is called 'Rightly dividing the Word'. In this example, I would not be taking the verse out of context, but the other verses doesn't pertain to the topic at hand.
Kinda like you telling a friend about the movie you seen last night. You don't include every bit of it cause it is not pertinent to your point or story.
I know this is a year old original comment I am replying to, but hope this helps in understanding.
