Headlamps, probably the hardest item to find that's just right. I still have 2 of the old original Petzl headlamps that needed a large flat battery, they must be over 30 years old now. One thing I don't like is torches or headlamps that need to be cycled through all the options especially when the red option is the last one, by the time you reach it your night vision is ruined from all the white light options. You mentioned the batteries but not how long they last. Also, in the new, rechargeable model, how long do THOSE batteries last and how much harder is it to replace them? Things to think about when looking at the newer models!
Exactly - I prefer devices which take a standard battery like AA or AAA, as I know I can replace them if my rechargeable ones get a bit worn out. Also, I keep a pack of emergency non-rechargeable AAAs in my bag for my Petzl headlamp so I'm not caught out. I'd be reluctant to get a model with built-in batteries for that reason - it might not work as well in 5-10 years time.
This might be a stupid question, but I've wondered for a long time about this. Chickens go to bed when it's dark, and get up when it's bright. So in the winter, do they get up in the dark, or are they only up for 3 hours a day? And in the summer, do they sleep in the light, or do they stay up most of the time?
I don't know how it is in northern Sweden with the polar night when it never gets bright. Here the chickens are up for about 6 hours when they don't have additional lighting during the dark season. During summer is their highest production time and they are up most part of the day with maybe 6 hours of rest.

I used Petzl headlamps. But now use a Zebralight H600w now. Lighter and more powerful. Check it out. There is a lot of reviews on it.

They definitely roost for a longer portion of the day during the winters, but 3 hours is an exaggeration!
